This a tale of a number of cruel duels and all for the love of a woman or two, maybe three as well. It shows the perversity of a culture (Japanese culture) in medieval times. Not much difference between periods and as we all know this anachronistic way of life began to die around 1870 or so, albeit little by little.
Nevertheless, this movie is absolutely moving as a story of love. I would so far as to say this is one of the most beautiful movies in my long, long life. If you like, admire, hate, despise...all that Japan and its people appear to be, do yourself a favor and get this movie. Redemption is very powerful and this is what this movie is all about.
