WTF
21 January 2024
This had no plot and no interesting slice of life story. It had no point. How did this coma-fest get funded and made? All the characters are unlikable. Most are poorly played. You spend the entire movie waiting for the story to get going until you eventually realize there isn't one and nothing's coming. Jude can't get more than one star out of me. Maybe it's because he didn't have anything to work with, and it made him utterly unwatchable. Can you imagine? Something so bad it makes Jude Law look bad? Any story needs somebody you can love or at least like, even if it's someone you like to hate - - like JR. The sun is pretty much the only character you don't hate in this movie. But he's just the one dimensional character who is introverted and were told bullied. And he probably has 10 minutes screen time. I don't even know why he exists in the story. The same for the randomly angry teen daughter done-beyond-death cliché with absolutely no backstory or sympathetic feature or molecule of originality. It's like a bunch of Post-it notes jotted with regurgitated, exhausted ideas were pieced together into a "script" - and I'm being generous here with that word - and that's what we ended up with. I'm actually kinda pissed about it. What a waste of time. I should've read.

Mesmerizing. Engrossing. Stunning. Gut-wrenching.
21 April 2023
I am almost 60 years old, and I have probably seen upwards of 500 nature documentaries in my lifetime. Short of Planet Earth, which was as epic as is possible, this just might be the best one I've ever seen. It certainly is the best documentary I've seen about a specific clan. I felt like I was right there with them. Like I was feeling what they were feeling. Their fears, their hopes, their joys, their silly moments, and their terrifying moments. The cinematography is incomprehensively superb. At its most powerful moments, it is gut wrenching. As beautiful as some moments are, "at play in the Fields of the Lord," others are devastating. I wish the drive to wage organized, strategized war for nothing more than power were limited to our broken species. There are scenes that sent chills up my spine, because literally the only difference between what we are seeing and what we know has happened for millennia with humans, is the absence of shields and weapons Watching what happens despite the aggressors having all the food and space they need is pretty devastating. If only we could explain to them that we've decimated their numbers so terribly that they just can't afford to kill each other. In any event, difficult moments aside, you'll really want to watch this. It's the closest you could ever dream of coming to being inside a chimp society.

S2 Ludicrous, Crashing PC Bore
18 April 2023
Aside from agreeing with all the comments about the abysmal scripts, characters, and acting, I will add that the over-the-top inclusionary box-ticking and endless anachronistic PC set-ups are so preposterous and ham-handed that I decided it simply must be an inside joke, that they are deliberately parodying all the laughably disproportionate pandering to the radical left that's going on everywhere. I have actually sat here picturing the writers laughing their asses off competing to come up with ever-more ridiculous details of this sort, and in the meantime, not bothering in the slightest to think about actually writing a good or even passably mediocre story - they're having too much inside fun with this absurdity.

A Crashing Bore
19 April 2022
Sorry to say, because I wanted to love it, but this was intolerably boring. I gave it a chance all the way to the end because, as I said, I really wanted to like it so I kept hoping... Never paid off even a little. The two stars are just for the good production value and the lovely settings. The only entertaining moment in the whole show was the one scene with Jim Broadbent and Emma Thompson. I feel bad for them, though. A total waste of their good-sport cameo.

WTF w/the Totally Random Gay Melodrama?
23 March 2022
I have loved this show from the very first episode. I always cry at the end, not because I'm sad but because I'm so overcome with emotion during each closing narrative. The stories throughout, and the characters that have come and gone, have been consistently wonderful, engaging, moving, delightful, RELEVANT, etc. Now, all of a sudden, there's this out of left field gay melodrama that's in NO WAY connected to Nonnatus House or even the smallest thread of the Call the Midwife tapestry. Seriously, this is about the most forced and absurd WTF interjection of PC madness I have seen, second only to the Indescribably ludicrous indoctrination mission of the "And Just Like That" Sex & The City reboot, which exists in a cult-like deeply warped universe unto itself. (Nothing will ever be more ludicrous than that.) What a terrible "call" by the show runners that has left a huge wart (ahem) on the face of this otherwise near-perfect historical drama jewel.

Still LMAO
14 March 2022
Seriously laughing out loud at the black girl casting for heiress Georgiana Lambe. AND needless to say her "grrrl power." WHY do they INSIST on such preposterous revisionism? Filmmakers and advertisers have turned all their work into total jokes, fearfully pandering to the small, radical PC police. Before you accuse me of being racist, FYI I'm Hispanic. Also, I'm neither brainwashed nor ludicrous. Need an option for 0 stars based on the insurmountable stupidity.

Did the Cops Really Say "Over the Top?"
9 March 2022
I had never heard about this story before this show. My comment is based on the assumption that the depiction of the cops on the scene is accurate. They thought Russell's 911 call was "over the top??" I thought he was unbelievably controlled. If my husband came home and found me dead in any manner, particularly violent and bloody but even simply natural causes, he would be so beyond hysterical that the 911 operator would not be able to understand anything he was saying. How can you love your spouse and not be legitimately "over the top" If you come home and find them not only dead but brutally killed or self-inflicted? Maybe they didn't love their wives all that much.

Good Enough But ....
4 February 2022
My basic comment is that this is good enough to keep me watching every night and not have to find something else. Mostly because I'll watch anything with Nicola. However, the sheer overwhelming number of interracial couples, along with gay interracial couples, is actually laughable. Except for pretty much Hannah and her mother with their partners, every single other couple is interracial, whether they're part of the story, or extras walking around in the background, or having a two-minute throwaway scene with one of the lawyers etc. It's an overly exerted, preposterously desperate "look how marvelously inclusive we are" pained exercise that ends up serving best as a drinking game. Take a shot every time you see an interracial couple. You will be wasted by the end of every episode. If this were genuinely reflective of society that would be great. However, unless there are no straight same-race couples left in the UK, this is just ludicrous.

Ruined by Endless Smarm
8 January 2022
I've loved every second of the series from the first episode, but this first episode of season four was absolutely ruined by the endless raunchy sexual innuendo. It's one thing to make an occasional funny double entendre here and there, but this is really nonstop gross raunch. Too bad. I hope the rest of the episodes are not like this. What a way to ruin a wonderful show.

Even Olivia Can't Save This
3 January 2022
I love Olivia Colman. I love character studies. I love slice of life movies. All that being said, this movie is absolutely pointless. It isn't even that it's bad, it's that it has absolutely no purpose in the storytelling universe, whatsoever. And what was with the criminal waste of Ed Harris? At least I didn't pay for it.

Entertaining Enough to Keep Watching, But...
28 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Rather than say the same thing everyone else is saying, I will point out one seriously grating issue - which by the way is not in the slightest unique to this show. It's everywhere, all the time. The obsession with "Oh how terrible that Jade was killed because she was just in her 20s" is enraging. So if she was in her 40,s 50s, 70s, or 90s it would've been perfectly fine to kill her? How about this. If age is going to be the determining factor of how tragic it is that someone was killed, then the older you are, the more blood, sweat, and tears you have poured into this life - it's all the more you've earned the right to live and therefore much more upsetting if you're killed.

9 Wonderful Seasons, 10th Has A Boil
8 December 2021
I have loved this show from the first episode to the last of the 9th season. Unfortunately, the character of Marlon has absolutely ruined the 10th season. Every scene he is in churns my stomach. I just want to slap his face with every snarky comment, ridiculing smirk, too cool for the rest of you attitude, throwing their generosity and support back in their faces at every turn, etc. He is a deeply unpleasant character not at all in keeping with the sweet spirit of the show. Horrible addition to the team and I really hope they write him out immediately starting the next season.

I Was Riveted Nearly Every Second
16 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Everything was pitch perfect and addictive except one thing... The only reason I don't give it a 10 is because I am so sick to death of the "more fabulous than all of you losers" teen girl trope, and this one could not be more pointless and shallow. That aside, fantastic cast, great stories for each, super well-acted. Yet one moment outshone them all - when Quinn runs at the end. I cheered and happy-cried all at once. Perfect ending with the totally unexpected break-out character. Bravo.

Would Have Rated 10 But the Narrator Is The Pits
4 February 2020
The visuals are gorgeous. I was perennially covered in goosebumps and streaming tears over the beauty, the fragility, the wonder of it all. BUT that required an extreme exercise in blocking out the narrator, in fact several times I muted the TV and played classical music instead. She nearly put me into a depression bordering on coma. She sounds like a severely depressed robot even during delightful or high action scenes. She could not possibly drone on more uninterestingly if that had been her plan. In short, gorgeous nature show ruined by the narrator. Can't imagine who she auditioned for that thought she was even remotely a good choice, much less the "winner" for the job. As you can see, this review barely mentions the beautiful visuals and carries on all about the narrator... THAT'S HOW BAD SHE IS.

Hilarious! Laugh the Entire Time!!
23 June 2019
Could not have been better. Pitch-perfect send-up to the classic Agatha Christie murder mysteries, right to the last shot (pardon the pun). Sandler and Aniston have great chemistry, the LOL one-liners are nonstop. Just a delight though and through!
