Toy Story 3: The Video Game (2010)
Great fun, but over before it started
I bought this game with high expectations. These expectations are derived from the Toy Story 2 video game which in my eyes is a great video game adapted from a movie. I'm glad to say that the game didn't disappoint but that's only game play wise. I know movie-video games are limited because the game is adapted from the story but they missed out large chunks of the story and literally focuses on the beginning, middle and end. Nevermind the in between.
Lotso was used once and we saw the friendly side to him. Ken was completely ignored and the Baby is a mere ornament on the shelf. Come to think of it, Mr and Mrs Potato Head are completely missing from the game as well.
Don't get me wrong, there are highlights to the game, one of which being the gorgeous look into the imagination of Andy and Bonnie which makes game play a real treat. The second is the video game of Buzzlightyear that is faithful to the version Rex plays in Toy Story 2.
This game could have been great, every part of the story is fun and it's great alternating between Woody, Buzz and Jesse but I felt that it could have been expanded more. If it wasn't for the nice feature of Toy Box mode, I would have been done with this game in a few hours.
Triangle (2009)
Brilliant and Intelligent
I went into this movie not expecting anything mind-blowing, but oh how wrong I was! Triangle is not your typical torture-porn scare fest. It is a mind tangling, heart bursting and utterly fearful underrated masterpiece. Now where to start with the review? I'm going to try to not spoil anything, you get a better reaction from this movie if you know nothing about it.
Acting. The acting in Triangle is very impressive. The leading lady, Melissa George takes on the role of a single mother named Jess caring for her young autistic son, but is suddenly plunged into a spiral of chaos as soon as the main plot jumps forward. I stereo-typed Melissa as an ex soap opera actress, which is what she is, but she shows us that she has grown in the many other projects she has worked on. She carries the movie pretty much on her own and she does so very well. It's hard for any actor to do that, it's often easier being able to fall back on another leading character but she does not have that luxury, and to be honest I'm glad of that. The other actors provide an exceedingly decent performance considering they're all supporting actors and actresses. Triangle has a list of B-list actors but they all prove to us they are worthy of being up there with the best.
Plot. This will be quite short because I don't want to ruin anything! The plot is very, very smart. When it first starts, you plan out in your head what will happen but then the outcome will be something very different. There are many twists and turns that glue you down to your seat, stunned in awe. Any plot-holes the file has are often cleaned up as the film moves on.
Set. I was very impressed with the set, they captured everything very well. The CGI is as good as anything else, sometimes it's easy to spot out fake looking props or special effects but everything in Triangle looked pretty god damn realistic. Sets that constructed and not added using computer graphic technology were also very well made. We don't forget where we are because of how accurate they are. Everything is so detailed, it's shocking!
I think I've said enough. The bottom line from me is that you should see this movie, and you should do so knowing little about it! Don't even watch the trailer if you haven't seen it yet, I got lucky because I saw the trailer in August and it's only just come out in England yesterday, October 16th so I had pretty much forgotten everything about it. Triangle will take your mind and tangle it but still let you understand what is going on, which is a tough thing to do when making these psychological horror and thriller films. They can be clever but they can also lose you, Triangle keeps you all the way to the end. Watch it, I insist.
90210 (2008)
Dear lord, get over it!
I have literally been forced to write a review for this because I am sick of the amount of people insulting this show for such ridiculous reasons!
90210 is DECENT. Oh my goodness, there, I said it! "You gonna punch me now?"
Sure, it's no award worth of winning show, but what type of show with teens ever does? Just look at One Tree Hill and The O.C, both are based around teens with the occaisonal adult and it's not like either of them have awards coming out their back sides.
Yeah, it's acting isn't amazing, but seriously what did you expect? I can't think of a similar show with better acting. Again, referring to other teen dramas: One Tree Hill and The. O.C, neither of them have good acting. Shows like this are like temporary soap operas and there isn't any decent actors in any of them! Why is that? Because it's so god damn unrealistic. 90210 is unrealistic, which is why you may consider the acting bad. A situation you've never thought of happening jumps out at you and you have no idea how the characters or yourself should react.
Okay, it's a remake, so what? It may be a remake type spin off show to the 1990's 90210, but it is still a different show. If you don't compare it to it's predecessor then it makes the show much more enjoyable. I'd say the remake is better anyway, it's just more up to date. I know I wouldn't be able to enjoy that out of date BH90210.
Seriously, stop comparing it to the first one, stop treating it like it SHOULD have been made to win Oscar type awards, stop complaining about the acting when you have no idea what makes a decent actor and stop the ridiculous hating for no reasons other than the fact you "hate Annie because she is annoying".
Hannah Montana: The Movie (2009)
It delivered what it was supposed to
I came onto this board a couple of weeks before having just seen the movie about 20 minutes ago and I was really shocked at some of the hatred this movie had generated. I really just couldn't believe this move would be so bad it managed to score below 3 on the IMDb rating (though the majority of the ratings are from crusty old men).
This movie, as overrated as it may be, is not actually anywhere near as bad as people make out. It leaps far beyond any other teen girl flick I have seen in the past 5 years. Hannah Montana: The Movie delivers what it should; which is an entertaining, funny and enjoyable teen flick for the girls and boys of 16 and under. People of rating this movie based on things it shouldn't be marked on. This movie is not an Oscar winning movie. It won't win the best awards for screen play, script and acting because it's not supposed to be that. This movie is supposed to be a "fun for the kids" type movie and that is exactly what it is; The story was well made, it contained moments of humour, the songs were catchy (example: Hoedown Throwdown), the acting was decent considering it's using a cast from a Disney show and the script and screenplay were spot on.
If you are a girl/boy aged 16 and under and you don't like this movie: then you don't really like Hannah Montana. If you are a man/woman aged 20+ and you didn't like this movie: why the hell did you watch it anyway? Perhaps you walked into the wrong cinema screen or you were dragged to see it by your sons and daughters.
This movie is amazing for the target audience it is aimed at, so don't expect to enjoy it if you're a grown man.
Teiruzu obu Shinfuonia: Ratatosuku no kishi (2008)
Disappointing
Being a spin-off sequel to one of the most popular and legendary games in 'Tales of' history I expected this game to be good. It was supposed to follow the same style of Tales of the Abyss so I assumed we would get all of the Mystic Artes we missed out on and get all the added battle system improvements of Abyss but what I got was a sad excuse for a Tales battle system. The combo system is supposed to be aerial though you don't find yourself in the air much. The added monster capture system was a nice idea but it's too confusing. You don't even get a tutorial on how to do it so you find yourself button mashing when trying to capture and evolve one. Free run is as broken as ever. They fixed it up for other Tales games so why not this one? Collision data in battle sucks. You can't get near the enemy without getting pushed back by the collision data. It's like your kicking, sword slashing and bashing air!
As for the characters, well it's a different story. Emil, the lead male is a sad, soppy and soggy boy that could easily be mistaken for a girl. He even has a high pitched voice! He goes through the game having his angst moments and converting personalities into the Demon Lord every now and then but when he's normal Emil he's afraid to speak up for himself. There is next to no character development because it's always Emil the scared one and Ratatosk (alter ego) the strong one. Marta, the lead female is the most annoying tales girl to date. Tales of has many annoying loli girls but this one just takes the biscuit! Apart from having the most annoying voice actor in the world she has the most pointless character. She yearns for Emil to love and protect her but then turns around on him and starts trying to stand up for him. She's the most contradicting tales character to date!
The original Tales cast of the game has been completely ruined by shoddy voice acting and personality changes to the max. Lloyd is now an evil man who travels alone, Colette is no longer stupid, Genis thinks he's about 80, Raine is too soft on people, Zelos doesn't flirt, Sheena is to friendly, Presea talks so, so much and Regal has become the type of guy who would skip around a field throwing out cookies. A great cast ruined!
As far as the story goes, you will be disappointed. The "Centurions" are beasts that have shrines in the same temple of the Summon Spirits. They have their own "Centurion Cores" which play part in awakening Ratatosk, the Demon Lord who once guarded the Giant Kharlan Tree but abandoned it because everyone "Killed it" as he put it. The Centurion's are basically Summon Spirits. No originality there. Not only are there no summon spirits in the game but there Temples have been taken over and are now known as Centurion Temples. Quite ridiculous. The journey of the story is that Emil, Marta and the Centurion Tenebrae will meet up with members of the existing Symphonia cast to try and collect the Centurion Cores before Lloyd (now evil) and the Vanguard, which is basically the same as Cruxis except they are not thought of as Holy and non of the villains have giant wings. The story, in my opinion had loads of potential but it seemed rush and there wasn't much to it. The spoilers were typical and the lack of character development in it just made it grow tiring.
Would I recommend this game? If you like spin-off, non mother ship titles, then yes. If you like games like Abyss, then no.
Tales of the Abyss (2008)
Brilliant but missing half of the game
I would have given this a straight 10 but because of the substance it's missing I can't go beyond half the top score.
To start with, this Anime is a simply brilliant adaptation of one of the greatest games in the 'Tales of' games history. The story is gripping; it is a perfect mirror of the game! It almost uses the exact same dialogue in the exact same order. It is literally like watching the game animated. Whilst the game would definitely work up a score of 10, this anime can only work up a score of 5 because the game lacks any 'action' scenes. A reason the game was so good is because of it's battle system but this anime has completely gotten rid of that by having minimal action scenes with only a couple of tributes to the famous "Artes" of the Tales series.
Even though it lacks action, I definitely recommend this breath taking beautiful adaption anime. If you like any Tales games you will simply adore this anime.
Little Manhattan (2005)
Nothing Is As Big As Your First Love!
A match made in martial arts heaven - I had no intention of watching this film, it had casually begun playing on the TV but by hearing the first sentence my ears and eyes were immediately drawn to it. This film focuses on a 10 year old boy experiencing the feelings of a "First Love" for a 11 year old girl, not only narrated by the boy himself, it also gives a clear insight to what the boy is actually thinking throughout the hole of this masterpiece.
I found this film to be one of the greatest i have ever seen. You never usually catch a film that is a romance comedy for the kids and it makes it that much more amazing of a film because of the boy and girls age - the age which normally has boys and girls growling and shouting cootie's at one and other. This film has the boy trying to figure out why he is feeling this way about a girl, in a comedic way whilst trying to win her over, of course you can't tell what the girl is thinking at all in this movie, because its only the boy narrating, you cannot get a clear insight to what is going through the girls head, which makes the film that much more easier to get glued to.
The film contains so many parts that you would have yourself "aww-ing" and laughing whilst speaking to the TV yourself in a sense like "No! Look behind you! The Murderer is there!". What makes it more laughable is that the boy isn't trying to be funny, or sarcastic, it would appear he is speaking his mind.
Overall i find this movie to be a cute, adorable, spectacular, laughable masterpiece enjoyably for people of all ages. It really sets a scene that Nothing is as big as your first love, not even NYC, Hence the appealing title - "Little Manhattan" I'd rate this movie a brilliant 10/10, i would go higher if i could. A true Masterpiece.
