Ad Astra (2019)
Remember that botched french movie near the end of 'Mr. Bean's Holiday'? This is that movie, but in space, with hollywood budget.
The title says it all. Narcissistic self monologue, shallow drama, stupid science plot.
The acting is good, the cinematography is decent, but the plot man... the plot...
There is a perfect word to describe it, what was it again? Subpar? Disappointing? Oh wait, no. Tasteless. Tasteless describes the plot perfectly.
Lost in Space (2018)
Starts good, then becoming dumb and dumber.
Episode 1 was pretty good. I enjoy it very much up to episode 3 or 4, but then the plot starts to become very predictable and has various dumb coincidences/conveniences, and characters doing dumb decision.
The characters were supposed to be the best of the best humankind has selected. But turns out they do no better than what a fodder characters in dumb horror film would do. The plot is also predictable and old fashioned, not exactly suitable for modern viewers who has seen much better plot.
Not following order; kid thinking he's smart but is getting bamboozled over and over; separating in dangerous moment; being alone and unprotected in crucial times; and many more.
In the latter half of the season the kid is doing unusually naive and very dumb actions, which contribute the most to this low rating.
Overall the plot feels very outdated and this movie feels like more intended for kids rather than adult viewers.
Pacific Rim Uprising (2018)
If you enjoyed the first one, you'll enjoy this one as well.
I'm a fan of the first movie so I watched this sequel as soon as it comes out. I checked out some info about the movie before watching it and was disappointed to see some of the main actors and even the director were replaced. But after watching it even with negative assumption, I was still awed nonetheless.
Simply said, if you enjoyed the first movie, then you'll most likely enjoy this one as well.
I noticed that this movie is more oriented towards children and uhm, manchild. Most of the parents I saw after exiting the cinema look just okay, while their children were very excited.
Don't watch this movie while expecting superb acting or stellar storyline, go watch it while expecting to see giant robots punching other giant robots and monsters. But hey, at least I can safely state that the plot and acting are still way way way better than the Transformer franchise.
In conclusion, this sequel lives up to its supposed expectation as the most awesome dumb movie (as said by Honest Trailer).
Man, this movie should have been named as
Pacific Rim Next Generation: Dawn of Evangelion, With Transformers Involved.
Tomb Raider (2018)
The game won 'Game of The Year' award, but the movie surely won't win any award.
This review is based on someone who has played the game version, with that said, I can guarantee that the game fans would be very much feel disappointed with the movie content which is very lacking and unfaithful to what was given in the game.
The way I see it, this is a generic case of companies butchering a popular franchise title and milk out more money out of it. That is probably why they hire a no-name director, not top-rated actors, and even ignore the award-winning scenario from the game, so they can cut the cost. This movie's advantage relies solely on the popular franchise name of 'Tomb Raider'.
Why is this movie unfaithful? For example, there is nothing mystical or supernatural in the movie version, which means there is no majestic climax scene with thunderous clouds and quakes of Lara against powerful and evil remnants. I will not tell you how it turned out in the movie, but I can assure you that it is utterly disappointing.
Lara's crew are completely different. They use chinese actors so they can market the movie to china more easily. How the adventure starts, progresses, and ends in the 'cursed' island are also completely different. Everything seems like done in order to cut cost and be able to market the movie more widely, hence more profit.
Overall:
If you have played the game, this movie is like a slap to the face for you and I give it a 3 or 4 stars rating.
If you have not played the game, this movie may be somewhat mediocre-ish and okay for you so I would give it at most 6 stars rating.
P.S. There is a hint for a sequel, but I surely hope they do not butcher this good title further.
