Betty Gilpin shines in her role which is the icing on the cake for a fun violent tongue-in-cheek romp across political correctness from all sides of the political spectrum. It's a an enjoyable couple of hours if you like this style of movie.

Sweet Girl
(2021)
When I read the bad reviews I thought it must be bad...

...but it's a very good chase thriller with some great twists and turns. Better than the average in this genre. I expected it just to circle the track ringing the usual cliches, but it was more than that. Worth a watch.
Stay Close

Run quickly... away from it.
31 December 2021
There is a genre of 'thrillers' that begins with flashbacks or dreams of running through a wood at night, they usually become incomprehensible confused gibberish and this confirms the rule. I gave it until episode two, against my better judgement, before finally exiting stage left with a mental note that when you see the aforementioned 'running through woods at night' exit immediately.
Wonder Woman 1984
(2020)
Ignore the first 20 minutes.

I reluctantly went to this and didn't expect much and the first 20 minutes appeared to confirm this for me. I thought to myself this is a movie for young girls at best and just giddy nonsense. However it began to pick up and develop into quite a complex and fascinating movie tackling some serious issues. The special-effects and cinematography are superb from start to finish and it has its very witty moments. In the final analysis it's well worth a look although strangely not something I would bring to kids nor which kids would follow.
Broken Law
(2020)
Painful.
5 August 2020
I rarely write negative reviews but this film was painful, they tried to cram everything into 90 minutes and managed to achieve little. The soundtrack was the best part of the movie but actually got in the way as they appeared to want to cram in as much music as possible. The plot was interesting but never developed, neither were the characters. If the movie had been an hour longer and better developed it could have been great.
Who Killed Little Gregory?
(2019)
Superb and harrowing.

Home with a cold so I binge watched this in the morning and it is a truly harrowing and shocking documentary. It explores not just grief, a judiciary gone astray but the ability of the public to act as like a mob with pitchfork in in one hand and burning torch in another. A study of humanity I suppose.
A compelling documentary
5 June 2018
Frightening to see how this man could travel to a poor country and establish himself effectively as a feudal lord and apparently engage in extensive criminal activity and then walk away as if it was just a bad holiday. I think the best line in the documentary is that by a local who knew him and said "he is as crazy as bat-shit" and if you watch the documentary most people will agree. The most heart breaking portion of the documentary is the scenes with the father of the man he allegedly murdered talking about how helpless he feels seeing this guy walking around Scot-free and running for president in the US whilst his son is dead. Well worth a watch.
Sugar Mountain
(2016)
An excellent movie.

An excellent movie with an original plot, good acting, great scenery and edited tightly enough to maintain interest continually. Well worth a watch and I do not understand the overall low rating or the criticism of it.
Steel Rain
(2017)
A real surprise find!

We have become so used to the hegemony of Hollywood that it is easy to forget other countries can and do produce excellent movies. This South Korean film is superb in that it is has a topical credible plot that is executed well producing an intelligent political action thriller with touches of humanity and humour. Well worth watching and enjoying.
A Quiet Place
(2018)
The first time I found IMDB ratings suspect - average movie at best.
10 April 2018
There clearly is some kind of media campaign to hype this movie because it is not a 10 or anywhere near it. It is an average movie that gets more annoying as it goes on and you just start saying "why dont they just...." I would not waste money or time on this as it will be on TV quite soon I would think.
I didn't want to like this movie but I did.
28 March 2018
Not only did I not think I would like this movie, I didn't actually want to like it. So when I found myself laughing, I was trying to suppress it like I was laughing in the back of class, which only made it funnier of course. It falls down in lots of places, but it is funny and you will laugh.
The Post

Heavy Handed
19 March 2018
There was so much right about this movie, especially the amazing attention to period detail, that I was left wondering what went wrong and why did I feel something wrong? In the end I read another review and they hit the nail on head, it was just too heavy handed and ham-fisted. In the first few minutes the 'Moral Dilemma' was being put in place like gigantic chess pieces being set up on one of those gigantic boards. And if you didn't notice this they kept nudging you to remind you. I wanted to stand up and shout 'OK, I get it!'
It is worth watching of that there is little doubt and maybe the 'take away' from all of this is that a free press is hard to obtain and easy to lose but vital for a democracy to function. I suspect watching this movie many people might think 'oh this portrays the battle between Trump and the press' but I think that interpretation could easily be turned on its head. It could be argued from the other point of view i.e. do the media personally dislike Trump enough to skew their values to try to 'get him'. I don't know but maybe everyone should watch it with a broader view on the whole matter.
Manchester by the Sea
(2016)
A gem
19 March 2018
When I walked in to see this movie I literally did not know whether the Manchester it referred to was in England or the US, that was how much I knew in advance. I looked at the poster and said I would give it a try not knowing what kind of movie it was. With no expectations I was truly impressed by this powerful piece. Its treatment of the subject matter was astounding and it manages to weave in dark and black comedy whilst also touching all other bases. It avoids taking the routes that so many other movies do and I found this refreshing. Academy awards should have been liberally distributed to all concerned. I was so impressed I went back to see it again about a week later which is something I rarely do. The one caveat I would add is that had I known the subject matter of the movie I may not have gone to it.
