Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023)
Akin to Watership Down
Be under no illusion this film is not comparable to the other Guardians of the Galaxy movies. The last time I was this traumatised by a film was probably when watching Watership Down (which I have seen a few times over the years but not in the last 15). Rocket's back story is counter balanced with the dedication shown to him by his friends. I give it an 8 on the basis that the music is the weakest selection in any Guardians film and it would have been interesting to see more of Warlock. Sci-Fi, adventure, humour, redemption and heart break (so much!) all feature, but rest assured I will never again watch this film.
The Company of Wolves (1984)
I've never eaten a windfall apple, and (just to be safe) good dating advice...
This film has left an indelible impact on my childhood. I first saw it when I was 5 years old as my mother didn't want to watch a horror movie alone, I have been frightened (albeit also intrigued) by horror folklore.since and spent much of my teenage years reading about werewolves vampires and witchcraft and then studying psychology. If you claim to love the genre but have never seen this film I don't believe you love werewolf movies. Evocative story-telling, creative displays, both humanizing and animalising the werewolf. Watch this and 'Dog Soldier's and you will not be disappointed.
Ghost Stories (2017)
A well executed 'Tales of the Unexpected'.
My first reaction is that I need to watch it again. While personally I did not think it was scary, it does have moments that are typical to make the viewer jump. It does have a big and somewhat surprising twist at the end (which I thought was very clever and well executed), however I think the most scary aspect upon reflection is if that twist might actually be true in some real life cases, that is seriously scary and very sad. It was a good film, I look forward to watching it again, there is some light relief and laughter in one of the tales and some of the acting is very good - Martin Freeman and Alex Lawther particularly. The problem is that you just don't care about the wrap-around as Prof. Goodman is a priggish bore, an academic bulstered by his own beliefs and ego. Also, once the twist was revealed even the Prof's name annoyed me slightly - the point felt a little hammered home. I did feel that the explanation of Locked-in Syndrome was absolutely disgracefull, and not in line with medical science, which was just sloppy: now there is a film to watch - 'The Diving Bell and The Butterfly. Overall: good; worth a watch; not in itself scary; definitely food for thought.
