Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023)
Almost walked out, but glad I didn't.
Having not seen the previous entries wasn't exactly sure what to expect, (except the general band of misfits save the universe type thing), and within the first 20 odd minutes almost walked out, as there is distressing maltreatment of animals depicted, but I'm glad I didn't because what followed was a colourful adventure w/ superior world building, (though it did take it's own sweet time to get to where it needed to go and 45 minutes from the end it was losing my attention before it picked up again for the denouement).
I haven't given it a higher rating because the bad taste of how the animals are treated never quite left my mouth and it does severely drag in places, not to mention the humour is mostly terrible (barely a laugh from the audience for the whole run time). I'd also add that the High Evolutionary (main villain), didn't suffer enough for my liking for his behaviours, and they could of chosen better songs.
So, a good movie w/ a great villain (both the performance and his diabolical schemes), well worth watching. I can't say if it's a good finish to the trilogy, but as a stand alone movie it entertained.
A Quiet Place Part II (2020)
Don't believe the hype.
I heard good things about this movie, and having not seen the first installment had no reason not to believe them.
What can I say? It was just muh w/ generic monsters, kind of like 'The Last of Us' mixed w/ 'Pitch Black', but takes itself way too seriously (I got the feeling the director actually thought he was remaking 'The Road' at points).
The actors performances were OK, except for Emily Blunt who I thought was pretending to be blind for a while as she was staring so hard and sadly all the time.
The monsters were also laughable, I haven't seen a less physically scary entity since the 'Blair Witch' remake. Just humanoid bodies w/ long arms and legs and a head that looked like a Brussel sprout falling apart.
Not that scary. Not as much fun as it should of been. Not sure what the point was. I'm seeing lots of good reviews on here, but in the cinema I was in , there were walk outs.
The best parts were the beginning that reminded me of the pre-credit 'Dawn of the Dead' remake sequence w/ all the street chaos and the young daughters determination, but a creature feature simply can't survive a rubbishly designed monster, if 'Alien' had this monster it would be 'Xtro'.
Don't believe the hype.
The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021)
Men in peril don't make for scares.
A formulaic movie, but a formula that works well. The main antagonist is extremely unsettling whenever they are on screen or just off it, but two of the targets being large, grown males simply doesn't create the concern to cause the audience to identify w/ their struggles. I never thought they wouldn't survive, which wasn't too hard to guess, but was intrigued as to who was behind all the satanic shenanigans going on. Good performances, cinematography and pretty much everything, accept the scares, which is a problem for a scary movie. Would like a spin off about the Occultist though, she was like the villain from a meaner, better movie.
Coming 2 America (2021)
Nah fam, just nah.
The original is a classic, this is just a cash in, and please, don't let Leslie Jones anywhere near another remake. If she didn't put 'comedian' on her resume, no one would guess.
