The Looming Tower (2018)
Great series but who wants to see Jeff Daniels having sex every episode?!
Fantastic show, great script and acting. Looses a point for the unnecessary sex scenes every episode with Jeff Daniels having sex with different woman. Shows the failures within the Government and complete lack of transparency between the FBI and the CIA and the Government's unwillingness to take the time to understand the implications and complexities of the Middle East which as we know the West is still in 2022 facing the repercussions of with terrorist attacks such as domestic and recently ISIS. Pacing is good but could have been better without so much for focus on Jeff Daniels sexual affairs.
The Many Saints of Newark (2021)
Negative reviews are unjust due to unrealistic expectations
It was never going to be as brilliant or anywhere near the same level as the series the bar was set at the highest level so for anyone to have the same expectations is going to be let down. That said I thoroughly enjoyed the movie the acting was supert with lots of well cast characters from the series and good storyline with many references to the series without being over the top. If you enjoy mob movies this is certainly a decent film and if you're a Sopranos fan then purely for the nostalgia it's even better. Just have realistic expectations beforehand. A solid 8/10 and any reviews under 6 are unjust especially in comparison to similar style/genre films.
The Night Of (2016)
Masterpiece!!
Outstanding!! Now firmly in my top 5 series of all time. This series is proof that authentic storylines did he or didn't he do it, the Police (no pretentious Hollywood glamour but darker & more realistic such as bad attitudes, mistakes, being unhelpful & overworked arseholes) along with the veteran Detective & D. A vs The Accused, the not quite as he seems no frills straight talking Lawyer who has some great one liners; very Tony Soprano-esque which is no surprise since James Gandolfini was a Producer. The storyline is incredible as is the acting. From the first episode I was hooked & completely gripped as events unfolded and feeling on edge and sense of bewilderement and fear for the accused 'Naz' which continues throughout the series which has a great ending also.
Our Godfather (2019)
Good documentary and use subtitles if needed
Perplexed by the bad reviews regarding "I don't speak Italian" don't these people not know Netflix offers a very easy system to add subtitles? My 8 year old child even knows how to do it, honestly the mind boggles these bad reviews based purely on this should be removed surely on such a ridiculous basis due to the viewers incompetency....?
4 Blocks (2017)
Was one of my favourite shows until Prime cancelled it & kept us hanging on for a year
Tremendous series, stellar acting with a fantastic storyline surrounding the Hamady Brothers, their criminal empire & the effect this has on their family. Superb sub plots throughout both seasons which tie in cleverly to the main plot and of course the subsequent implemecations their actions has inflicted not only on themselves but also others. If you enjoyed Gomorrah, The Sopranos, The Wire, Suburra Blood on Rome etc you will LOVE 4 Blocks (imo it excels Dogs of Berlin) What a shame Prime UK for whatever bizarre, no doubt financial beneficial decision, aren't showing season 3 even though the reviews from UK viewers & crirics have been tremendous add to that the ever growing hardcore fanbase now left feeling disappointed to say the least. No fault whatsoever regarding the show in any way whatsoever...this could easily have been as successful and global as Gomorrah.
Gomorrah (2014)
Dare I say better than The Sopranos - Yes!!
What initially put me off watching this after numerous recommendations was subtitles - ridiculous & I'll NEVER make that mistake again especially given the comparisons to The Sopranos, The Wire, The Godfather, Goodfellas etc. I thought no chance can it be THAT good. Well yes is is THAT good and then some. Each season is a Masterpiece from the stellar acting, character Arc & storylines (this isn't so gritty & violent making it hard to watch) but delves into characters, their families and impact of their role & consequences. Ive never felt so invested and impressed with a character like Ciro since Tony Soprano and Paulie Gualtieri and now Ciro beats them both (I never thought anyone or any series would come close to The Sopranos) Ciro's personal battle with his own demons, his brotherly relationship with Genny & yet harsh reminders of his violence. Episode 1 you'll think "wow that was great" and by episode 2 you'll be hooked. I loved The Wire but some seasons and episodes were a bit slow although overall superb series. Gomorrah is like nothing I've watched before, it's faultless and I'm extremely picky as I hate too much violence, if something's too far fetched or cliché but Gommorah is none of those it's a must watch Masterpiece. 10/10
