The Stranger (I) (2020)

Embarrassingingly unbelievable, was it a spoof ??!!!
8 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This started out with SUCH promise. I flinched a few times, but was determined I was just being too picky. After all, Stephen Rea was in it??!! I argued against my husband's dismissive and unimpressed remarks regarding some of the 'red herring' occurrences. But, to be honest, they were more like 'rotton herring' moments. As the dots failed to, continually, just not join up, the complete ludicrousy of the whole plot became laughable. Hilarious ,actually. The ending?.......what the ???? Was Tripp supposed to have been so overcome with remorse that he shot himself...three times...in the chest. ? ...........Could one REALLY embezzle THAT much from a kid's sports club????

Mesmerising
25 January 2020
Intriguing. A brilliantly woven story that gave you answers, took them away then made them plausible again. I am no believer, so watched without preconceptions. As confusing as it was, it made more sense than it should?? I think I will watch again. I feel I must !!

PLEASE let the meek inheret the Earth
13 November 2019
I know Meryl Streep is political, but, this film is how a celebrity SHOULD channel their political associations. It was a brilliant insight into the seedy, corrupt world of business. We were given a window into the ghastly world of drugs with Trainspotting. This does the same with the shallow, contrived world of wealthy business parasites. Living and feeding off us, the struggling, working ,underpaid fabric that hold society together. It was a brilliant film . The actors were superbly cast. Excellent! !

One Good Teacher can be a Life Changer
7 October 2019
I enjoyed this film very much. Kevin Kline was excellent,. I kept seeing fleeting shadows of Robin Williams (Dead Poets Society). The portrayal of how a good teacher can influence young minds was uplifting. But, even the best cannot reach the worst. Especially when so much parental,or other influential, damage has already happened. It certainly cast some light onto how a corrupt Politician grows on the vine.

A Whole New 'Afterlife'experience.
10 September 2019
The first time we watched , my husband grumbled through the first 30 minutes. Then he became quiet, then he became absorbed, finally , when it finished we were both bursting with questions. So, we watched it again the following evening. This time, engrossed. The beginning defines the end. It's mesmerising. The consept of ,if you avoid the final step into 'whatever' , you enter a world of timelessness, just an observer. Only rarely are you able to emote, in extreme circumstances. The way a vast amount of time elapsed ,where the apparition had no awareness ,was so well done. The feeling of deep sadness and bewilderment was given while at the same time one was aware that nothing was felt. We watched a third time, it needs concentration, but well worth the effort. What was in the note???

The Snowmen Stole the Show!!
10 June 2019
Snowmen are not renound for their acting abilities, but the Snowmen in THIS film were about all it had going for it!! I don't know if the freezing conditions made the cast slightly stiff or they themselves were struggling to understand the plot, but this film lacked any kind of cohesion. ......and what was Val Kilmer doing in it. I don't mean that it's not his kind of film, I mean ,What Was He Doing In It????Bloody terrible....nice scenery though.

Be careful who you welcome into your home!!

Brilliant little shocker of a film! Sinister children are always chilling and this little charmer would make Mother Theresa's skin crawl. We have the usual characters. The frustrated ,the victim, the villain, the naive jerk. But, this is well thought out and each character plays out believably. Good ending too. So often these film types leave you feeling disappointed and vaguely cheated.

Pretentious Drivel
27 April 2019
What an utter load of twaddle!!! I always try for a little constructiveness ,but, please . There are limits and this film went above and beyond the absurd, into the realms of "I haven't a clue what I'm doing, I'll just blunder on and pretend that I do". It would make about as much sense if you ran it backwards....possibly more so??? I'm sure the actors were only in it for the pay cheque.

12 out of 10...off the charts!!!
27 April 2019
This was the best....the very best film that I have seen in a long while. Anyone, who thinks they are entitled to own the title "critic" and gave this a mediocre review needs to go and get another job. It was 2 hours of the best entertainment I' ve enjoyed for.....????....ages!!! Rami Malek was mesmerising, he WAS Freddie Mercury. The man is a bloody genius!! When Queen were at their peak ,I was in my twenties, I liked them, but was never a passionate fan.....I am now !!!

CleverlyTurns Pity into Respect
24 February 2019
This is an odd film. At first you see, apparently, two rather sad middle aged men . They seem like dull, monotonous individuals who have become totally dependent upon each other in their lonely ,exclusive world. But, due to a tragic development , we begin to see the contentment in this friendship that is ,to them , fulfilling and complete. A delicate and controversial subject is addressed in a thought provoking manner that leaves you feeling nothing but respect and compassion . A quirky film, but worth watching.

Picks you up...then let's you go,go!!
8 February 2019
This carries you away on a wave of absolute delight and expectation, for about half an hour. Then, you find yourself floating gradually down to earth, before you hit a big air bag of confusion . I stayed with it and , in a peculiar kind of fashion, enjoyed it. It had some very good moments. But, the dots just didn't join up. I tried to explain it to my husband , who was completely baffled. I started off sounding like I knew whata I was talking about?? But, I lost my way and had to admit to him that, yes, I didn't quite understand what the hell was going on!! Maybe I will watch it again and try a little harder .

Time to Brew A Cuppa in the Long ,Meaningful Silences.
23 January 2019
I'm sure a good three quarters of an hour could've been shaved off this epic bore and it would've made more sense. The l...o...n...g pregnant pauses added nothing but extreme irritation. Don't these arty, farty producers realise that, in real life, people just don't stare vacantly at each other for extended periods when all hell is breaking loose around them. But, if the acting dragged along at a snail's pace we may have been able to comphrehend some of what this was about if the actors stopped mumbling and spoke with just a little clarity . Phew, it was just very hard going .

Worth Watching
15 January 2019
This was an absorbing ,edgy, underrated film. OK, the acting was a little wooden at times, but that gave it a certain charm. Amazingly, these days, you could hear and understand the dialogue. It had a certain Alfred Hitchcock feel to it. Dylan Sprouse was riveting, from start to finish. Wouldn't surprise me in the least if his name started popping up in the future. I hope it gains in popularity. There's such a lot of rubbish that is given huge publicity only because some overpaid "name" is on the billing. Films like this too often get overlooked in the rush to push blockbuster's.

I want to read the book!
8 January 2019
Recommendation texts whizz to each other when someone finds a gem in our family......and I 've been texting! My husband and I binge watched this little number. What a wonderfully quirky , surprising and yes, dark comedy. Brilliant cast. Joe is portrayed superbly by Pen Bagley. Elements of Anthony Perkins' Psycho character, but much more sophisticated . I like him...should I ?One more episode left and I'll know !!!

Appeals to all ages
6 January 2019
I have reccomended this to a wide range of age groups amongst family and friends and all have given very positive feedback. Excellent series , I DO hope they give us another . I think it definitely has the potential to go further without losing momentum, as so many series do when they continue too long. Really want to know what happens next with all the characters?!

Typical Sandra Bullock
1 January 2019
I didn't think Sandra Bullock could get more annoying then in Gravity. But she has !! This could've worked, it has the potential for a good story. But fails, miserably. Girl stole the show, a little sweetheart. Sandra Bullock must have a damn good agent , I can't think of any other reason why or how she is cast for anything??? The icing on the cake was the ending .......pass me a bucket!!!!

Showtime Folks..Boom, boom!!
13 December 2018
What a ridiculous title for a News programme. Gives an immediate pre-conception of "tacky" . Was this Kate Burleys idea, or was she so full of herself that she found this too intoxicating to think straight.?The Kate Burley Show , for crying out loud.......this is a News programme !! You could begin by "showing" some class and acknowledging you are a News presenter ,not a song and dance routine.

Australians finish school at what age ???

Compelling drama, hard not "bingewatch". Slightly mystified by the supposed ages of the students. For most of these "boys" ,I suspect being thirty was just a memory. But enjoyable, none the less.

The Age Old Feel Good Factor
7 December 2018
A nonsensical little film, but pleasant and enjoyable. A little out of touch with real social housing problems maybe. It has the Jane Austen theme of destitution when one is down to one's "last servant". I couldn't ,in all honesty, feel heartfelt compassion for a silly woman whose lot was not really terribly tragic. Oh, for the enviable position of having to sell everything and still end up living in idyllic retirement in a "roses round the door" beside the river, cottage. My sympathies lay with her son. Trying to argue some sense into a spoilt, helpless, twerp of a Mother.

What I got from this film? Say NO to your kids occasionally. If you don't , then don't act surprised when no-one wants them around. That's about it, really .

Pleasant surprise.!
30 November 2018
I wasn't expecting much from this, but I was very pleasantly surprised. Not usually my type of film, but it kept me intrigued until the end. Yes, it was well worth watching! I think Sam Heughan would be a damn good James Bond

Absolutely Superb...captivating!!
5 November 2018
Read the first book over 20 years ago and never realised Diana Gabaldon continued the story of Claire and Jamie. When I watched Outlander on Netflix I had no idea that this was the same story. As I watched, I remembered , and was absolutely delighted. Sam Heughan and Catriona Balfe have brought these characters to life on the screen and they are mesmerising to watch. I purchased the whole series of these books afterward and they have captivated me. Congratulations that R.D. Moore was not frightened to show some of the books more traumatic scenes. This was the 18th century and they were brutal and cruel times. To soften them with today's standards would have seriously compromised the whole story. As for the more passionate scenes, I think they are, without a shadow of a doubt, some of the best ever . You would have to be emotionally dead not to feel just how much these two young people feel for each other. I hope they continue with this series and we get to see the complete story of Jamie and Claire, to the end.

Cringe !!! I did !!
8 August 2018
Well, it took me at least ten minutes before I realised this was not a comedy on the lines of The Windsors. Then ,to my horror , I realised this was supposed to be SERIOUS!! The script seems to be written by a couple of teenage girls while drinking cider. At least The Windsors had some success at being funny. This isn't funny ,it isn't clever, it isn't good . It's embarrassing , it's cheap and it's just plain nasty and a complete waste of time.
