Zoe (2018)
Tries to be ethereal and profound, but ultimately falls very flat
Ewan McGregor and Lea Seydoux have no chemistry. At all. I'm not sure if that is due to Lea Seydoux beguiling ways though, as I have seen her one other time, and she doesn't seem to resonate with me.
Another point of this movie, is almost that a "synthetic woman" is of more use than a synthetic man. Due to the fact that many men have trouble getting a woman to show them attention, hence why synthetic women would be more appealing than synthetic men (unless of course it was in the construction or heavy labour force I would imagine).
Also a point that always bugs me in these movies.... the robot, synthetic human etc always has feelings that you are meant to care about. They are implanted feelings and/or born out of pretend experiences.... so they are either fake or the feelings of someone else....not theirs/robot. So.......
Someone mentioned "power imbalance" on here between subject and creator... THEY ARE A ROBOT.... Seriously?? #robotlivesmatter #robotrights
Obviously the ACTUAL human is going to have REAL feelings as they are HUMAN. So feel something for them if anything(ie. Ewan McGregor's character)... And yes I know it's a movie so nothing is technically real, but yeah... Anyway. Crap movie...
Goddess of Love (2015)
Well acted, well written, directed and paced.
I loved this movie. It is easily one of my favourites movies. 5.3 is a joke but the people who didn't like this film didn't understand it in my opinion. Or they just don't like this genre.
I feel the whole delusions/hallucinations thing hasn't been done to great effect with a lot of movies, but it was superbly done here. They even threw in a twist at the end which was good. It was also an interesting commentary on mental illness and how when someone tries to self medicate rather than go to a doctor etc, the results are normally bad.
I did notice this film rated a little better with an older audience. I'm not surprised as I don't see people with very little life experience understanding that people like this character do exist in the world, and this is likely how they would act.
Last but not least, the acting in this movie was terrific. Alexis Kendra is a very talented actress, and considering she also co wrote this movie, you could tell she put her heart and soul into the character, which paid big dividends in my eyes. Everyone else in the movie acted well too I thought.
The Bye Bye Man (2017)
4.3? For real??
I know this is a horror movie, therefore they always rate low. But... I don't see how this movie rates THIS LOW.
I have seen some reviews by "professionals" who seem to think this movie is badly directed and paced. That is rubbish. The movie ticks along at a good speed, and I was entertained for the full 96 minutes.
I will say the acting was only average in some parts ( I'm looking at you Cressida Bonas. Carrie Ann Moss also seemed a bit disinterested)
At the end of the day though, the movie was much better than all of that other supernatural dribble that has flooded the market in recent years...One last thing that needs a mention is that it seemed to be sanitized a bit to get a pg13 rating, which hurt it a little but didn't ruin it as some have suggested. All in all, it's worth a look. You could do a LOT worse..
