Superhero games have been very hit or miss in the past, whilst great games like Injustice, the Arkham series and Lego Marvel Superheroes exist, numerous terrible titles also exist such as Superman 64 and practically every superhero movie tie-in that's not Spider-Man 2 or X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Because of this Spider-Man for PS4s quality wasn't guaranteed but I am glad to say that this is a very solid game with a few problems.
Let's get the negatives out of the way first, the inclusion of pointless mini-games such as the bloody pipe mini-game just brings any fun you were having with the game to a halt and may I ask has the connect the pipes mini-game ever benefited any game. Pointless stealth segments as Peter Parker's pals are mostly boring and tedious (with one exception that is actually quite tense which would be a spoiler to mention). Stealthily taking down enemies has none of the satisfaction that games like the Arkham games bring and sometimes taking down enemy hideouts can get tedious because of just how many repeated enemies appear one after another to receive a spidey-spanking. Finally the city is a bit dull and lifeless which also lacks much variety in how locations look.
Now onto the positives, the movement is just plain fun and is something a lot of games need to learn from, swinging from roof to roof is so much fun and the side-quests test you in your swigining skills which you are constantly improving on. The side-quests are varied and test everything from your swinging to your combat skills (which even though I did complain about too much combat in enemy hideouts earlier don't get me wrong combat is a lot of fun in Spider-Man PS4 just too much of anything in a single area without anything to break up the gameplay will get boring no matter how great it is). The costumes are great and the fact that new abilities are given to you with these suits and the ability to mix and match costumes and abilities means I was constantly changing how I played and looked which is always fun. The story was also great with likeable characters (including the best version of Spider-Man in my opinion) and some genuinely emotional moments. Also since quips are tied to quests they don't get dull like they do in other games where you'll be hearing the same joke thousands of times in your playthrough.
At the end of the day Spider-Man PS4 is a great game all around with a few problems stopping it from being a instant classic.
