The Death & Life of John F. Donovan (2018)
Well done!
I never even knew this film existed until this evening when I saw that it was available to stream. I'm quite shocked (in a good way) how well Kit Harrington acted in this. I had been worried that he wouldn't be able to leave Jon Snow behind and this movie proves that he has! Exceptional cast and fantastic music! Did it drag a bit at the end? Yes, but it's definitely a movie I would recommend
A Christmas Carol (2019)
Excellent!!
This is the best retelling of the iconic Charles Dickens' classic I have ever seen! The acting was top notch, especially Guy Pearce playing Scrooge. FX really knows how to do dark and gritty & there's plenty of darkness in this movie, with a dollop of creepiness right on top! This is not a children's movie nor is it a feel good Christmas time movie. This version doesn't give Scrooge redemption & forgiveness right away, he knows that his past actions can't be erased, in fact he's not even seeking forgiveness, going forward he will be the best version of himself that he can be. It's much more realistic. The special effects are great as well. Definitely a must see!
6 Underground (2019)
Much better than I anticipated!
Exciting, action packed, great stunts & thrills galore, oh and of course Ryan Reynolds' snarky wit! Definitely worth watching! I think there is plenty of story there to make this a franchise! The actors all had great chemistry together. One thing is lacking is more back story on them all. However, that wouldve taken away from the action, so that's the trade. Hence, a part 2 would be more than welcome! Good job Netflix!
The I-Land (2019)
What a joke!!
The trailer intrigued me and I was looking forward to watching this series but in the first 10 minutes I thought I was watching a bad lifetime movie(yes, in my opinion their are some good lifetime movies)! Natalie Martinez, Kate Bosworth & Alex Pettyfer are all known actors that I've seen in movies previous where their acting skills have been at least average. Here, their acting except for maybe Natalie's is wooden & bordering on laughable! Kate's acting is only better during her flashback scenes(possibly showing her lack of range as an actor). The other "unknown" actors are just bad, period.
As for the dialogue, I agree with other reviewers that it as well is laughable & just nonsensical! There are parts in the first 2 episodes where I burst out laughing & I'm pretty sure these parts were not supposed to be comedic in nature.
You become stranded on an island with a bunch of strangers, have no idea WHO you are, WHERE you are, no belongings & you decide to frolic in the ocean and or lay out in the sun to "get a tan" oh & toss the only reading material you find in the sea without showing anyone else. That's just a few things that'll make you say......what the heck were these writers thinking.
By episode 3 the storyline starts to have potential & had they followed that path from the beginning without all the cheesiness with better writers, etc I definitely would've enjoyed it more. That's the only reason I'm giving the series a 3/4 instead of a 1.
It's too bad because Netflix has the $ to spend on great quality programming not this crap
