Jimmy's End (2012)
6/10
A disappointment
17 August 2013
First off, I am a big fan of Alan Moore's writing, I own about 50 of his books, as well as his spoken word CD's and the excellent documentary film, The Mindscape of Alan Moore. Needless to say I was expecting great things from this film, but all I got was a clichéd storyline with the most overused of all twists. The acting is great, the characters are dull and one-dimensional archetypes and the fact the entire film is shot in one location makes it feel extremely cheap. The other reviewer who called Eraserhead pretentious must not have understood it, because Eraserhead is a masterpiece, one of Kubrick's favorite films to boot; Jimmy's End and its prequel film are clearly post-Lynchian and inferior to that director's work in just about every way.I wouldn't draw such a comparison if Moore didn't make snide comments about Lynch's work when confronted with the fact that Jimmy's End uses startlingly similar imagery to some of Lynch's films, the most obvious being the focus on red drapes. So in conclusion, I'd recommend avoiding this film, as it's pretty ugly and has poor sound design plus not a single likable or relatable character. The scene with the phone ringing as a lame attempt to create tension was a direct ripoff from a Takeshi Miike film called Audition which did it much more effectively, in Jimmy's end it's just annoying, like an alarm clock you can't switch off. So yeah, avoid it if you can.

Game of Thrones (2011–2019)

Mostly boring so far (3 episodes in)
8 May 2011
As a fan of HBO and the fantasy genre, I thought this show would be a sure-thing, alas I was wrong. Despite the universal acclaim the show is getting, I find it rather dull, boring and inconsistent. There are moments of brilliance that are too-often followed by nonsensical or badly written scenes. The Imp is a great character, by far the most interesting of the bunch, so much so that he makes the rest of the characters seem like dull archetypes. The show is also very sexist and gratuitous, and I'm no prude or overt feminist, I'm also a man. The plot line with the princess being more-or-less raped over and over again who then learns how to have sex more efficiently to please the man in question, now it seems she is in love with this man and happy about having his child.... yeah I don't think that's a very convincing or morally sound character arc. Between that, and scenes that occur for no natural reason other than plot advancement, I don't think its a great show. The production values are astounding, as you would expect from HBO, and the acting is great for the most part, so I' say it's slightly above average despite my complaints. I seem to be in a minority in not thinking this show is a masterpiece so I would have to recommend it for others to try for themselves.

Astonishing

This is my favorite film of all time. I'm not going to try and explain the plot because that would be selfish of me. Just watch it if you have the chance and make sure you do so with an open mind. Like most of Lynch's films, the plot isn't exactly straight-forward or simple; but that's not to say it's nonsensical or pointless. There's a lot going on, some of which you won't pick up until you've viewed the movie a couple of times. It's also beautiful, maddeningly so. Every scene is incredible to look at, the acting is perfect and the tone of the film is very distinctive. Watch this if you're a Lynch fan or open to non-traditional forms of cinema.
