Patton (1970)
The moment you realize you love this film...
You realize you love this film when Patton yells out in victory "Rommel, You son-of-a-B!@$%! I read you book" At that point, this entire biopic of the defining feature of the only general the Germans ever feared became one of my favorite films. Watch the entire movie just to realize how that one line encapsulates exactly everything Coppola was trying to do with Patton as a character, the energy, passion the contradictions. He is by far the best developed personality I've ever witnessed on screen, and every time i watch this movie, i revel in his glory. I give this movie a 10/10, cause it deserves every single mark. One of the most perfectly made films ever.
Star Wars (1977)
Once you see that star destroyer!
I love this film. Star Wars what started me watching movies (admitedly i had to watch this 300 times before i moved on). I can still actually remember the first time i saw it, i was about seven and i was bored at one of my parents friends' houses. Noticing that i was, one of their much older children put this on for me he simply said "You will like this. Watch out for the star destroyer!" And i can tell you, the moment that small spaceship whizzes past you go wow! but then when that mass of grey foreboding blots out the entire screen, you are no longer in a living room of people you barely know. you are unaware of where you are and the only thing you can say is WOW! the world changes becomes a much larger and more interesting place.
The best advice i can give you is every time you watch this film watch it with a clear mind and re live your childhood imagination in all its glory. Needless to say, i was no longer bored.
A River Somewhere (1997)
A lovely little show that captures the freedom of fishing a free flowing river.
I first came across a river somewhere by accident when I thought it was Tuesday not Wednesday. I turned on the television to watch an Attenbourough documentary and found what perhaps is my favourite show of all time. The great thing about this show is it doesn't pretend to be anything it's not. This show is about freedom, freedom to do what you want when you want in the middle of nowhere. The show is about two fly fisherman (Tom Gleisner, Rob Sitch) fishing various rivers around the world with a "that'll do" approach never taking themselves seriously and often poking fun at the absurdity of two grown men being fascinated with outwitting and catching a creature with the brain the size of pea. Because that's what this show is, a lot of fun.
