Baki (2018)
Not for everyone but very entertaining if given time
A lot of the reviews on here sound like people that didn't know about Baki before this show's first season. To be fair, the first season starts very slow and doesn't pick up until after the first 13 episodes or so. But if you power through that or back track through the previous anime or the manga itself, you really get a good idea of the driving forces in Baki. It's not the kind of anime where the main character is going to do almost every fight like it other big shonen series sometimes do. Baki is a show grounded in its absurdity between ultra violence and disciplines of martial arts. I honestly love this show, the fights in this latest seasons especially are incredible with seeing some absolute powerhouse displays of fighting. If animes where power scaling and minimum lengths of several hundred episodes are the norm for battle anime Baki stands out especially,
The Midnight Gospel (2020)
I appreciate the animation but the conversations are not entertaining
Watched two or three episodes. The first one was super weird in terms of format, I didn't expect a podcast with animation when clicking on this but that's all this show really is. The art styles are pleasant in a quirky way and I really like those but you can't really force a scenario around a dull podcast to try to pad for time and attention
Cannon Busters (2019)
A Great Anime with Many Sources of Inspiration
A few other reviews have tried to claim this series as being a "rip-off" of trigun or cowboy bebop, which largely comes from the art style aesthetic I believe. I've watched over half of this series so far and I feel that it is in no way a "rip-off" of these other shows. This is a review about Cannon Busters so I will focus on the show primarily, but it is important to understand that the plot was based on a comic series, the art style did change a bit from then but it is definitely a new show that has some great action scenes and a fantastic English dub as well. Overall, the series holds my attention and has interesting characters to follow. Sometimes the use of CG animation can detract from the aesthetic that I feel the show is striving for, but it is nothing egregious like some other recent anime shows. The dialogue in the show is not bad by any means, as the delivery from the voice actors is pretty strong, but the lines can feel as though they are there kill run time or set up for the next scene more than contribute to the show. In the end, I really like what I've seen from this show and I hope that others will give it a watch too. It's not an instant classic or anything but it is quite good and can be a fun watch depending on the kinds of shows that you may be into as it is action oriented.
FLCL Progressive (2018)
It's not the original, but it's still great in it a different way
The original FLCL is one of my favorite anime of all time. There are a lot of things about this show that could be better, mainly when it comes to introducing new characters and making each episode have a big moment for the whole of the series (to me at least, every episode of the original had one big moment that immediately comes to mind). Having the pillows playing the music for the show definitely scores some serious points though. I knew going into this show that most of the old characters wouldn't be back, and while some of the new characters were not likable, I did feel some of the others grow with time. Overall, I liked it, but it wasn't a constant rewatchable classic like the original.
