The Nest (I) (2020)

Entertaining and original, watching a family fall apart in an ominous setting
5 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I enjoyed the storyline and the modern American/English tradition contrast. I was invested to see how it would work out for everybody. I found the acting believable and the setting interesting. There was a looming darkness throughout the film that made me wonder if it would turn into a horror movie. It didn't, it actually doesn't reach any real clue other than that the family is no longer a functioning one after the move.

I did miss a bit of credibility on why the wife agreed on moving one more time, even though she seemed smart and capable. I also struggled to believe that these two characters were actually THAT negligent and damaging towards their children even though they seemed loving and invested in them. But that didn't stop me from having a good time seeing this film. Me and my boyfriend turned to each other smiling/laughing quite a few times in disbelief of the characters behavior (in a good way). We enjoyed ourselves seeing the parents we never want to be.

Cringe! I wanted to like it but it's bad :-(

Charlie's Angels are all about being effortlessly cool and sexy, smart, tongue-in-cheek and entertaining to watch. I love the 2000 movie, and also liked the sequel in spite of the big portion of cheese that was added there. I've recently re-watched both and came to watch the 2019 version prepared to like it in spite of bad reviews.

It starts off with a typical witty bad guy Angel interaction that is supposed to draw you in, smiling, imagining yourself sitting there in her place, feeling the attraction brushing off on you. But only minutes in, it feels like a knock-off instead of the real deal.

Stewart sits there in an ill-colored wig and can't quite make me believe she is the cool, lethal seductress that she is embarrassingly literally explaining to the audience she is. In stead of an exiting back-and-forth between her and the bad guy, the man is just portrayed as a flat dummy with nothing to say. Cringe! That's not what girl power is about. From then on, the story is so utterly un-engaging that I litteraly lost track only 10 minutes in and turned the movie off. They missed the mark :-(

Gooische vrouwen (2005–2025)

A near-genius show, but unfortunately misses the mark on too many occasions
22 June 2018
I think I speak for a lot of Dutchies when I say this show is a delicious guilty pleasure to watch. The very first Desperate Housewifes / Real Housewives type series made in Holland. It's about four housewives who live and/or work in 'The Gooi' - A wealthy, luxurious and green area in the center of Holland.

A lot of things hit the right mark: First of all, the whole idea of following these "gooische" women's lives is entertaining, and I believe this is done quite realistically. Furthermore, the opening tune, the music, the beautiful scenes shot in nature, great humor, and a bunch of great actors and actresses put together all contribute to great quality.

The show is outright funny (lots of laugh out loud moments) and can be incredibly realistic and dramatic at times. It gives some commentary on social relations between rich people and rich vs. poor people. Also, the family situations and interactions are well written. Some of the characters are really recognizable, either for ourselves or those we know and love or encounter in life. For me Claire, Willemijn and her husband, and Martin Morero stand out as funny and believable characters.

Other characters and story lines however, are not realistic AT ALL and this is what keeps the show from spreading its wings and flying.

The evil maid, and most of the child actors (sorry) really diminish the genius-factor by a lot. Their acting is just not natural, and the writers haven't given them much to work with: There are a lot of flat characters walking around in 'Gooische vrouwen' (Anouk & Vlinder, Tipi-Wan) Their story lines and/or acting are just not up to the standard of some of the other characters and are just not believable enough to get emotionally involved, it just becomes annoying to watch.

Too bad - but nonetheless an entertaining and funny show to watch. Worth your time! Especially if you like Sex and the City- and Desperate Housewives-type shows.
