The Resonator: Miskatonic U (2021)
Nice try but...
How is the f/x so much worse than a 35 year old movie? I know it's a micro budget but come on. The cgi was laughable and there were not many practical effects. The sound was terrible too. Coould they not get the original resonator sounds from the 85 film? On the bright side the actors that played Crawford and Mara were quite good. The other performances were decent, except for the professor. His overacting was distracting & cheesy. The story was decent enough and kept me interested. The ending is a mess but I expect it will be explained in the next episode. If you like the old film this is worth a look but don't get your hopes up.
24x36: A Movie About Movie Posters (2016)
infomercial for mondo
First 30 minutes is about real posters for classic movies. The rest focuses on new posters for old movies. These are not real posters imho. The movie turns into a commercial for mondo, the company that sells these posters. Was hoping to see more about development of movie posters in hand with creating of the movie.
Kid 90 (2021)
Punkys home videos.
This had some cool footage but got boring quick. Never really goes anywhere. Kind of like watching someones home videos. Great for them but not interesting for anyone else. Still it was cool to see all the teen celebs from that time. They partied and had problems just like us regular kids. (I was 17 in 1990). Worth a watch if you're from that era but don't expect much. Soleil does seem like a nice person.
Big Time (1977)
Obscure blaxplotation
Christopher Joy (Curtis, Up In Smoke) in his only starring role is Big Time Eddie Jones. A small time hustler specializing in fake injury lawsuits. When threatened by his loan shark he turns to robbery to pay him back. Problem is he unwittingly robs the mob. Yes the story is pedestrian but fun. Christopher Joy brings some charisma to his role along with a few other colorful characters. I gave an extra point for the music by Smokey Robinson. Not available on dvd but it's currently on youtube. If you like these 70s movies it's worth a watch. A footnote in the story of blaxplotation. Be sure to check out Joy in the excellent 1979 film Seven.
Boangwan (2017)
So So Dramedy
As this type of movie goes, you could do worse than The Sheriff In Town. It is sometimes funny and has some interesting drama moments. At the same time, you could do better without much effort. There is a lack of direction for the protagonist that the movie was never able to overcome. In addition, the movie was not able to balance the tonal contrast between its drama elements and comedy elements. I would personally say that the drama works better. Finally, I think the protagonist played by Lee Sung-Min is miscast. In many ways, the movie could have compensated for its tonal issues with an actor that could more subtly balance them in his performance. Lee Sung-Min, while a decent character actor, wasn't successful in this area. Personally, I think he is better as a supporting character actor rather than a leading man. So, if you are going to watch this movie, watch it for a drama than the comedy.
The Manhandlers (1974)
forgotten drive in classic
I tracked this down to see Judy Brown in something other than a WIP flick. Three girls take over a massage parlor only to have the mob pressure them into making it a whorehouse. The overall tone of this movie tries to be serious but comes off light and playful. It really has an innocence compared to some of the other exploitation films of the era. The mobsters are quite laughable but entertaining. All three women are very beautiful and show us the goods but nothing too explicit. Most of it is shot in the parlor. There is an extended scene at an amusement park towards the end giving us some nice footage from the era. Although the title may suggest it the girls are not involved in any fighting or action scenes. If you like drive in films of this ilk its worth checking out. Nowhere near a must see though.
Plane Dead (2007)
Surprisingly good
OK I was not expecting much here. A straight to video zombie flick and an obvious attempt (or so I thought)to cash in on the lousy 'snakes on a plane' Well it turns out that this is a great little zombie flick! There is actually some decent character development before all hell breaks loose. I actually cared about what happened to the main characters. The plot was probably written on a napkin but it works and is executed nicely. There are some great gore effects, creative killings, and several laugh out loud moments. Fans of movies like return of the living dead and dead alive wont be disappointed. Much better than recent zombie failures like land of the dead, day of the dead (remake), and Shaun of the dead (not a failure but stinks in my opinion). This deserved a theatrical release, although it probably would have had trouble because of the ridiculous premise. At first glance this looks like it should have been canceled at liftoff. Don't be fooled, this is one great flight you should be sure to catch. Highly recommended.
