Pay It Forward (2000)
Horribly executed melodrama
I watched this movie recently with my classmates who loved this movie - but I can't understand why. I utterly disliked it.
The actors are quite good - Spacey is genious, the boy (while overacted sometimes) was emotional throughout the film as well. His mother was okay, too.
The basic message and idea of the story is nice: people can change themselves and their surroundings. However, it is horribly executed. The movie is full with miserable characters, cheesy lines, slow and corny scenes. I literally couldn't decide whether to cringe or sleep.
The movie tries to depict the world as a harsh, dark place to be. It tries so hard, that a lot of times it doesn't even makes sense. Moreover, it is still pretty unrealistic. I understand that the movie doesn't focus on addictions, but it's just so misleading and false about it, it's outrageous. E. g.: alcoholic has alcohol in her mouth but SPITS IT OUT for the sake of her son and suddenly recovers. I don't even want to mention the heroin-addicted guy - ridiculous.
I'm not done! This movie just goes for effect so badly, it's nauseous. SPOILERS! The boy dies in the end! For what? No specific reason. It's just sad. And people cry about it, so it's good, right? No - it's not. It's a dumb way of squeezing out emotions from people.
To sum up, I don't recommend this movie to anyone, who doesn't like Hollywood movies and tons of corny clichés.
