Toopy and Binoo (2005)
My Perspective as a Young Teen
As a kid, one of the few things that let my parents take a break was this show. I remember running around the house squealing when it was about to come on. Definitely geared towards younger kids, but I still watch it today, as a teen, mainly for the nostalgia. Now, I wonder how they manage to make the world so lively with only one character's voice.
This show did NOT make me gay. I'm still a bit too young to confirm my sexuality, but this show did not make me question it. If anything, this show made me more accepting of the variety of people in this world. Also, when I was younger (8-9), I was a bit of a tomboy, but I was always embarrassed about it. Toopy and Binoo made me feel a bit more comfortable in myself, and made me feel that I didn't need to act like the girls who wore dresses and sat around sharing gossip. I would run around in the forest with all the boys.
Now about the 'sexual' accusations, Binoo is Toopy's stuffed animal, brought to life by his imagination. Many children may kiss their stuffy goodnight, or take a bath with their favorite toy. Heck, when they do have a bath, they can go to an underwater world in their bathtub propelled by a little frog toy. As a child, I never found this romantic or anything, just two best friends who loved each other deeply. Also, in my mind, even when I was little, I never considered them to be people. They were animals, fictional characters, so I never found it innapropriate or odd.
Last thing, this did wonders for my imagination.
