Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019)
Some reviewers have their info wrong about this film
I've read a couple of reviews that really bashed this movie. One of them used false information about the film to hurt it's credibility by saying it defied science thinking that it suggested Godzilla was created by nuclear bombs ( this was their main problem with the film and harped on it very much) No, he wasn't created that way according to this movie. He was always in hollow earth and fed on radiation. Once he found the gateway to enter our world Japan dropped nuclear bombs on him that only made him stronger. His ability to produce nuclear blasts from his mouth is a result from feeding on our use of radiation. And we use it in abundance, especially trying to destroy him, at first.
The film is a love letter to classic Godzilla films and it shows us spectacular special effects. The story is just good enough to carry it along. I loved it. My main reason wanting to write this review wasn't to tell you how great it is; it was to inform curious readers that certain reviewers bashing this film, unable to pay attention enough to know how Godzilla exists and why he has his power, shouldn't write such negative reviews.
Where the Scary Things Are (2022)
Just terrible
It's sad that I've shopped a few scripts over the years and never got so much as an email in response; then there are films like this piece of trash that get made. There was absolutely nothing good, original, or special about this. The acting is just terrible, except for the man playing the teacher - he was actually a very good actor. Too bad he was put in a film with the most dull of all plots I can imagine.
When I watch a film I want to like at least one of the main characters. That's not possible with this one. The only time I can respect a film that has nothing but terrible characters that I just hate is when they're killed off in really cool way. Well, there is nothing special about how anyone is killed off in this. It's the lamest creature film I've ever seen with the lamest kill scenes I've ever seen. They're literally all the same. There is not one kill different from another.
This is just bad. Don't waste your time. I can't imagine what made anyone want to waste their time or money making this one.
Son (2021)
Just awesome
When I started this one I didn't know what to expect. From the beginning it reeled me in and really didn't let me go until the end. As a horror fan I found 'Son' to be extremely well written and thought provoking. The acting was superb - even the boy is great. The director did a great job bringing out the kid's talent. I believe we'll be seeing a lot more from the both of them.
Highly recommend this one. The score is way low - don't be fooled.
Blood Vessel (2019)
A Good Horror With A Good Story
Don't listen to the haters, unless you like the high budget, played out story lines that Hollywood puts out every year - then yeah listen to them.
Blood Vessel is good. It's blends mystery, horror, and suspense in a great way. It delivers for horror fans who enjoy something different than Hollywood's constant resurrection attempts of films like the The Ring.
Paranormal Attraction (2020)
2 For Effort
Anytime I review a film and it is just bad I try to at least give it 2 stars for effort. Some have even failed at that. This one deserves at least that,
though barely. All I can say that really hasn't been said in the reviews (unless I missed it) is just watch the trailer on YouTube. That should've been as far as I went with it, but alas, here I am warning you not to follow these footsteps.
Rough Night (2017)
Female comedy appears to be hopeless.
Not only does this movie lack humor of any form, it's a rip-off of at least three other movies - The Hangover, Very Bad Things, and Bridesmaids.
Being that Bridesmaids in itself is a rip-off of The Hangover and this movie does a rip-off of the rip-off while ripping off the original material is just sad.
Did I mention it's not funny at all. It tries so hard to be too. It forces bad jokes down your throat over and over that I felt sick. Just terrible. Female comedy has to ride the coattails of male comedy, very blatantly, on a constant basis. It's a very depressing thing to witness. I don't know if it's an example of just how far our country has been dumbed down (because some people actually like this, apparently) and Hollywood is cashing in on it, or if it's just that they honestly can't come up with fresh material. It's sad, but what's even sadder is that this same stuff is happening in the horror genre.
Hellraiser: Judgment (2018)
The best since Inferno
Is a good thing I never read these reviews before watching a film. I'm assuming that half of these were written by non-horror fans expecting something like Insidious and the other half by pretentious and bitter Hellraiser "fans" that would rather see a half crippled, wrinkled Pinhead played by Doug Bradley. Sorry guys, but the priest of Hell doesn't age and sadly actors do. Get over it.
This is one of the better stories the franchise has produced in a while. I enjoy all of them except for a couple - Hellworld and Revelations. This is the best one since Inferno. I'm only saying Inferno is better because of its script and the acting (Craig Schaeffer killed).
Hellraiser: Judgement pits 3 detectives against a violent serial killer called the Preceptor leaving a trail of gore and bodies throughout the city. In the center of all of this is Pinhead and his cast of cenobites that act as the final judgement for sinners. The victims, the detectives, and the killer all share a common thread with those casting judgement and delivering the punishment. It is a great story for the franchise and I believe our new Pinhead was terrific. So were the newer characters of hell associated with Pinhead.
It's a very cool and very gory horror for fans.
31 (2016)
Rob Zombie doing his thing
This film gets a lot of negative feedback, but I have to disagree. Zombie makes horror films - not family friendly scary films or date night blockbusters. With Zombie you always get his movie. He doesn't conform to Hollywood standards to please the critics. He makes what his fans love, and that is hardcore, brutal, insane horror.
31 is a horrific tale full of violence and depravity. It's beautifully shot and at times reminded of 1000 Corpses in the way the cinematography helped tell the story. We've all seen films where a group is kidnapped and forced into some kind of game to the death orchestrated by a madman. Well Zombie puts his stamp on this. He makes it his own and you know it's his. The dialogue written is great as usual for his films - it's funny and it's realistic. The gore is extreme. The characters are original and their costumes are great. Some true art went in to creating these characters and costumes. It was very cool. The violence is uncomfortable. Zombie does a great job as always at invoking that sense of dread and uncomfortableness. It's Zombie at his most brutal and hardcore.
Battle of the Sexes (2017)
Not exactly . . .
I hate when movies claim to be true but lead the story away from facts. In this case, the true story is that the entire feud was fake. It was just like Andy Kaufman and Jerry Lawler in the wrestling ring. It was a media and political rouse to get people excited. He knew he would never win that match, it was all a joke. Anbody with a brain knew she would slaughter him at temnis. It sold tickets and made the both of them a quick fortune and made a political statement at the same time.
Why couldn't they just at least imply that it was fake, like in Man On The Moon? You had the effect that it was real, but also the knowledge it was a hoax. In this film's case the point would have still been made that women are good at sports too. The fact that the feminism was so in your face and told with the emotion like it was true ruined the whole film for me. They portrayed her like Rocky beating Apollo when she won the match. Thumbs way down
