Wasted on the Young (I) (2010)
7/10
Intense and thought provoking
15 March 2011
Wasted on the Young is an intense movie in the vein of Animal Kingdom but with a subject matter most similar to Brick. It is well crafted and the production value seems high for the tight budget they were undoubtedly restricted to.

The film is about a group of young people in an Australian private school whose lives are changed due to a horrific event that takes place at a wild party at the "alpha male" of the school's house. It is a very intense and engaging movie but unfortunately the ending was a bit of a let down and didn't really fit with the rest of the film.

The absence of any adult or authority figures in the movie is telling and the interaction between the perpetrators and victims is at times very disturbing.

It is a very interesting movie and it is a shame the ending wasn't as good as I hoped it would be but it well worth spending the time and money to see this film.

Easy A (2010)
8/10
Quality teen comedy
31 August 2010
Easy A is not your average trashy teen comedy. It recalls memories of Mean Girls and even a few hints of the less impressive Saved!. It has a magnificent cast and witty dialogue that makes it quite enjoyable to watch.

Easy A is about a girl who lies about losing her virginity only for the gossip to spread around the school. Instead of correcting the rumours she goes along with them and in the process helps out a few outcasts by "fake rocking their worlds". The only problem is the gossip gets out of hand and starts causing unexpected damage.

The references to the Scarlet Letter are an interesting addition to the story and Olive (Emma Stone) plays out a modern day version of the story quite well.

The dialogue is not what you would expect from a typical teenager today especially teens used to talking in texting lingo. The humour is sarcastic and extremely witty and I loved every minute of it.

Grown Ups (I) (2010)

Don't expect much and you will enjoy it
9 July 2010
Adam Sandler movies have never been smart and witty, so I wasn't expecting much when I went to see Grown Ups. It is better than his recent attempts but still not great but going in with low expectations helped me to quite enjoy the movie.

The movie is about 5 former school basketball players who return to their home town for the funeral of someone close to them. The interaction between these former team mates indicates that although they have achieved in life they still haven't fully grown up.

The comedy is quite lame most of the time but there are a few laughs to be had and the supporting characters are quite good who includes Maria Bello and Selma Hayek. They did seem to be having more fun making the movie that we did watching but I brought my dad along with me and he really enjoyed it. It is definitely not a great movie but for a light laugh after a hard day at work it is quite good.

Solid Australian Crime Drama
1 June 2010
This film is basically the story of a boy and his interaction with his criminal family and a policeman who thinks he can save him. He has to cope with the attention that his family receives from the police even when they didn't do anything illegal.

From start to finish this film is a classy Australian crime drama with a distinguished cast of some of Australia's finest actors. It is quite hard hitting in places and seems very realistic, even though it is not a true story. A great Australian story that will be enjoyed by most people especially those who enjoy the current batch of Australian crime shows.

Delightful Indie Flick
10 December 2009
This movie is about totally-in-love couple (Bert and Verona) who are about to have a baby who decide where they want to raise their child by traveling to different places where they know people. Along the way there are lots of laughs and a few tears and they discover that raising a child can be done in many different ways.

It is a delightful movie full of laughs, serious moments and brilliant acting. It is a great story, totally different to the normal romantic comedy, with a lot of heart and thought behind it. Both the leads are impressive and the quirky supporting characters make the story all the more enjoyable.

Get out and see this movie as a change from the normal by the book blockbusters, you will really enjoy it.

Interesting Animated Film
10 December 2009
I wasn't sure quite what to expect with this film but it was quite a good animated film. The animation is quite amazing mixing some rather low tech heroes with the high tech robots trying to destroy them. Also the surrounding scenery was quite well done.

As for the story the plot was very simple but it was the interaction between the main characters that made it interesting as well as trying to figure out how some rag doll looking characters were going to take on advanced robots.

It is a very original animated film and quite interesting, well worth spending a few dollars to see it at the cinemas.

Great Display of 3D capabilities
19 November 2009
Since I am not a huge fan of Jim Carrey and not really into Christmas movies I wasn't sure how much I would enjoy the movie but I really wanted to see the impact the 3D effects would have when applied to a well known story.

The movie itself is quite good but there have been better versions of A Christmas Carol, however the 3D effects greatly enhanced the movie and made it quite entertaining. It was my first experience with 3D movies and apart from the glasses being annoying at times it was thoroughly enjoyable.

The plot is relatively unchanged from the original text and the acting (animation) is very realistic making it quite enjoyable to watch.

Thought provoking documentary
12 November 2009
Sitting in a packed cinema awaiting the start of Capitalism: A Love Story I was unsure what to expect as my only experience with Michael Moore was this brilliant documentary Bowling For Columbine and this is a very different subject.

From the opening minutes right through to the end I was riveted to my seat taking in the full extend of the situation that extreme capitalism had a part in causing. Moore is over-the-top in places and some of the content is more propaganda that fact but it is very interesting and makes you think about what is important in life.

Capitalism isn't the root of all evil but it is certainly the cause of the some of the world's evils and the sooner people realise this the better.

Brilliant Romantic Comedy
6 October 2009
I had high expectations for this film as I have enjoyed Joseph and Zooey's previous work and they didn't disappoint.

It is a simple concept for a film, boy meets girl, boy falls in love with girl but girl doesn't believe in love, but it is pulled off fabulously by the leads, Joseph Gordon-Levit and Zooey Deschanel, who are as quirky as ever.

The director, Marc Webb, uses a non-linear story of high and low moments to map together the 500 days of Tom's very unusual relationship with Summer. It is both funny and interesting and it always keeps you guessing what is going to come next.

500 Days of Summer is one of the best films I have seen this year and definitely one of the best romantic comedies ever.
