Alice in Wonderland (I) (2010)

This film is a mess from start to finish. The joy of wonderland was always that it is about a little girl desperately trying to make sense of a world that is utterly absurd. The metaphor being that children do not always understand the sometimes arbitrary rules adults have decided are how the real world works. The reason this film fails miserably is that it tries to introduce the possibility of order to wonderland, including characters with sensible motivations and to make Alice the hero at the centre of it all. This is all the more unforgivable due to the story being uninspiringly prosaic. Very disappointed in Tim Burton, he's usually adept at exploring the weird and wonderful with flair, wry humour and insight but f9r all the colourful CGI this falls utterly flat.

The Bubble (2022)
8/10
Absurd, irreverent, hilarious!

This is a ridiculous film and it knows it. The whole thing is completely tongue in cheek and isn't meant to be taken seriously. Any comments about characters lacking depth or the pandemic not being handled sensitively are all fair so if that's what you want, this isn't for you. Depending on how you spent your lockdown(s) and your personality the chaotic environment and desperation of the characters may strike a chord with you, it did for me. Overall I appreciated the filmmakers attitude of let's laugh at the madness we find ourselves in.
