The Island (1980)
9/10
Great Pirate movie
26 December 2006
Where do, I begin... This movie was great from beginning to end for a small budget and great plot. The only main historical error, I could find with the movie is you get the idea if you follow Pirate history is David Warner plays character Jean David Nau who obviously his ancestor would be Francois L'Olonnais (Jean David Nau) who was shipwrecked with his crew by Navidad. They seem to obviously survived the native attacks, the only problem, I have is when they hoist up there black flag after taking the Coast Guard ship it is of Emmanuel Wynne's. Anyhow they made it a believable story of Pirates that survived on this island and started a colony for 300 years. Which you mix it up with the Bermuda Triangle. Wow! It explains the shipping loss aspect. I am not going to ruin it with getting into the plot the other writers summed it up pretty well just wanted to give a bit of historical aspect of the movie and general opinion of the movie. Great characters and acting a movie worth being released on DVD and hopefully it will have an uncut version of the movie and possibly deleted scenes due to the small budget..

Great Adventure Movie
23 December 2006
I finally watched this movie for the second time last time being when, I was 10 years old and it was very well done. It was funny to see Tommy lee Jones character as a privateer more than a ruthless Pirate, even himself he questioned the term Pirate with the man writing a somewhat half bio on his life. He seemed to be a opportunistic character who dabbled in everything from legal to mildly illegal activities as he states. I throughly enjoyed Capt. Ben Pease's character ruthless and funny a true pirate and slave trader. i would love to have seen a further adventure of Ben Pease's character and crew. The only thing, I did not like about the movie was how Tommy Lee Jones abandoned his crew amongst the Indian natives when the deal went sour, it did not seem like his character to run away leaving them to fight it out alone and die only himself to be rescued by the preacher and his wife later on from a noose. I do not see anything that this movie ripped off from Indiana Jones or any real comparisons except for the bridge scene which Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom ripped off from this movie. The title of the movie is very gay and weak, I guess Savage Island is a much better title for the movie. I am waiting for The Island (Pirate movie) starring Michael Caine and David Warner to come to DVD who knows what the hold up is???

Navajo Joe (1966)
8/10
I would rather watch Navajo Joe over six feet under
18 March 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Daniel Baker pull your head out of you know what! First off Burt Reynolds had to leave during filming of Navajo Joe for a commercial, which infuriated Corbucci. Reynolds thought he was going to become a huge star doing a spaghetti western and believed he was going to work with Leone. I believe deep down in his little heart he knows this was one of his better roles he has played.

The opening scene was great with Aldo Sambrell (Mervyn Duncan)smiling at Joe's wife (Cristina Sani). I didn't think (Indians) feared anyone especially Navajo..Answering Daniel's second intelligent remark! It shows Duncan's hatred for his own being half blooded Indian and during his childhood being called a halfbreed. He collects Indian scalps for a dollar a head. Which is funny how Joe makes a deal with the townspeople for a dollar a head. When Duncan learns that he has a bounty on his head he sacks the local town and make's a deal w/ Dr. Lynne in stealing the train carrying $500,000 on board. One by one Joe eliminates the Duncan Gang and Dr. Lynne is killed by Duncan. It is a great final showdown with Merv Duncan and Joe in the Indian Burial ground of his ancestors. Like Corbucci's style the hero is killed off unlike Great Silence were the hero dies and the villain lives. The hate for one another destroys each other it is a cool Ax to the head scene which is edited in most versions. When you see Joe's horse ride into town with the money we know Joe has died....Niccoletta M. plays a small role in this film as a half breed as well but the opposite to Duncan's character.

Ennio Morricone uses an unusual alias as Leo Nichols. Great music, great camera work and great acting. It is a shame Reynolds only contribution to this genre. The saddest part is it never gave Aldo Sambrell a chance to play a lead role only more smaller parts. It is rumored to have a full version were Joe is visited by Nicolleta M before he dies in the burial grounds bullet ridden.

Matalo!
11 March 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I loved the score by Mario Migilardi. Overall this movie for me was a major disappointment. The script was very weak, bad acting with the exception of Lou Castel who played a great role as the boomerang slinging son of a preacher, who is in the wrong place at the wrong time. The Mary character was great how she seduced and would do anything for wealth. I think the movie tried to hard to be like Django Kill it was more weak than surreal. It was Corrado Pani (Bart) in his only role in the genre and we can see why good looking but bad acting! You have an old lady struggling to grasp Benson Town is a ghost town but she hangs around waiting for a stranger like Castel to bring life back there which he denies the offer. The gold just slips away on a donkey nobody wants it except mortally wounded Bart who rides after it...okay!!! Wow, I am shocked there was no Matalo (2). Last thing did Mary and Philip die from the camera spinning around and around or by bullets??? I almost passed out from 2 minutes of brilliant camera work!

A Bullet For Sandoval
24 February 2006
This movie is in my top 20 list of the best spaghetti westerns. Ernest Borgnine was great for his only contribution towards the genre as Don Sandoval who blames the death of his daughter(Rosa) at the hands of John Warner (George Hilton) who wanted to marry Rosa but was not allowed due to the jealousy of Don Sandoval. Rosa dies giving birth to there child a boy who dies due to Sandoval's rage and jealousy and as well as the towns people's lack of help due the child being from a town having cholera. This last act makes warner turn outlaw punishing everyone who did not help. It is a great little story of revenge and hate that makes one of Hilton's best spaghetti roles ever. The ending is one of my favorites. A real comparison to the ending of "The Wild Bunch". The music was good and the acting and character profiles of the Warner gang was fabulous.

Greatest Spaghetti Western title
11 February 2006
I just viewed this movie on DVD after a long wait to receive it and it was very disappointing. I am a huge William Berger fan and was under the impression he played duel parts. One as the Crow then as the Crow's brother. Well once again, I was mislead by Thomas Weisser's book Spaghetti Westerns the Good, the Bad and the Violent. I know it must be exhausting viewing 558 westerns. Berger actually plays only the Crow who has about 10 minutes of film time. He was very cool and great acting as the crow. Now for the others my god, I actually stomached it through the lame fight scenes and retarded town folk of five brothers and their pa. I actually had to pop a lower tab just to relax.

The duel between Link and the Crow sucked for the simple reason here is a famous gunslinger (Crow) who is being relentlessly tracked down by the Connelly's who's father was gunned down by the crow years ago. He doesn't even get his gun out of his holster fighting Link who blows him away talk about the fastest gun in the west. Link should stop being a wannabe detective and be a pro gunmen. I am actually scared to view the three other movies Director Gianni Crea made. Die-hard Spaghetti fans good luck with this one!

Look out!
10 February 2006
This is a story of Gary Hamilton (Kinski) set up for a crime he did not commit. After 10 years he is freed on behalf of a Presidential pardon. What is nice this is a full performance on behalf of Kinski which is quit uncommon. Kinski does a fabulous job in this one. It shows how greed took over a rancher who decided to steal the goldmine that Gary Hamilton had in order to make a better life for himself and for his family by ruining the life of another. Antonio Margheriti does a great job on this one. He has been slandered for years on how bad the night scenes are on this film. Well if guys like Weisser and other reviewers used common sense maybe they could have figured the film video which they viewed came from bad stock. I have seen the DVD version which all the night scenes were cleaned up and what do you know it is clear as day!!!

The movie overall had great performances on behalf of Kinski and Peter Carsten(Ackbar) Well Mr. Weisser check out on ebay and get the cleaned up copy of this movie and it will not be frustrating anymore. Maybe then people will give the film a descent review.

Last Hope!
10 February 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This movie which was done in 1977 was the last hope for the Genre which was the Spaghetti Westerns. So much crap was produced through the later years. Mannaja ( A Man Called Blade) was one of my favorites the only two things it really lacked was the opening score was a bit weak and the whole Donal O'Brien Character (Craven) coming back to nurse Blade back to health to betray him????? That was the only problems, I had with the movie. The rest was awesome great job on behalf of director Martino and very impressive camera work by Federico Zanni. Maurizio Merli played the blade character to a tee great job especially for his only contribution to the genre.

I really enjoyed the music with the beginning love stages with blade and actress Martine Brochard a very well choreographed scene. Also who can forget the rotting eyeballs scene. The story was great so was the acting an overall interesting tale of a mountain man bounty hunter out for revenge. It's a shame such a great movie came too late to change things for the genre.

Blindman (1971)
8/10
Top 20 Easily
10 February 2006
This Spaghetti Western can be easily ranked as one of the top 20 of all time. T. Anthony was phenomenal for getting bad reviews and especially slandered for his acting he pulled off the blind role amazingly. I definitely agree, he is among the better actors such as Nero, Van Cleef, Kinski, and Milian. He is a better actor than Gemma and that is for sure. Blindman is a person who will not quit and is determined not to allow his handicap to get in the way with his business and that is to deliver 50 women to the miners. The movie was actioned packed throughout and kept the audience at full attention. I was honestly thinking to myself how is this plot going to be believable but it is very fun to watch and entertaining throughout. The movie added some very funny comedy to it which spiced it up a bit. I highly recommend this movie to die-hard spaghetti western fans.

Crazy Johnny
3 February 2006
A rare lengthy Kinski feature role as Crazy Johnny sex crazed outlaw who is wanted in San Francisco. Kinski's character is obsessed with raping women a sexual predator in the old west who has nothing more but stealing, raping, and killing on his mind. This movie maybe a major disappointment for many Spaghetti Western fans but not for many Klaus Kisnki fans. Overall it had two things going for it a great performance from Klaus Kinski and a great music score by Stelvio Cipriani.

Another story line which needed much more work done to it to be impactive but still fun to watch!

It would be nice to see this movie redone in the future. Since most old movies are being re-made nowadays.

Twice a Judas (1968)

Twice A Judas 1968
3 February 2006
I respect the other comment but feel as though this movie had a great story idea about a main character Luke Barrett having amnesia (Antonio Sabato). The first spaghetti western to use amnesia. I believe the camera work was great by well known Aristide Masaccesi. Victor Barrett played by (Klaus Kinski) gives a great performance as Luke's brother of course he's not he is only playing with Luke's amnesia which finally clears as the story unfolds he is actually Dingus half Indian who sets out to destroy the Barrett family. Dingus/v. Barrett plays a land baron stealing poor farmers land and using illegal Mexicans from the border to work the land.

This story could have been great if the script was changed in a few parts to catch the audience more with the unraveling amnesia mystery..

His Name Was King review
3 February 2006
Warning: Spoilers
His Name was King (1971) This movie with a great title but lacked an overall deliverance to the audience. Richard Harrison and Klaus Kinski were very good acting wise even though the latter was only 5 minutes of acting, which I clocked it at.

Harrison who plays John "King" Marley who's brother was murdered and his wife Carol was beaten and raped. Of course King is looking on revenge and the culprits are the Benson Gang who is secretly lead by King's friend Sheriff Foster(Kinski)who are running guns illegally. Well King wipes out the Benson gang and has a great showdown with ex-friend Sheriff Foster. The soundtrack in the movie was very weak shocking from the great Luis Bacalov. Soundtracks for Spaghetti Westerns are a key in sometimes saving face especially if the story is dull or the acting is bad. I do however recommend the movie for Kinski fans!
