Sherlock: The Abominable Bride (2016)
Amazing to the last tiny detail
First of all, I must mention I haven't read Arthur Conan Doyle's original Sherlock Holmes stories, so my review won't be based on if this episode has similarities or differences with them.
I must say this episode is one of my favorites. When I first found about its existence, I thought it would be quite weird and appalling due to the story of the series usually set up in modern times and this episode in the Victorian Era. However, the Abominable bride proved to be much better than I have ever expected.
The two storylines were the best part of this episode. The past and the present are tied up and subtly reveal more and more about probably the biggest question in the series - Is Moriarty actually dead? His unexpected return literally shatters Sherlock's world and his fear is masterfully shown in their scenes together.
Personally my favorite part is the case of Emelia Riccoletti itself. It seems difficult to solve at first but it's simple when you know all the facts which makes it brilliant. There is a little bit of feminism moment but that really is not an issue and doesn't ruin the episode's spirit.
Once again, Sherlock proves to be one of the best series ever made. Everything is amazing to the last tiny detail. The cinematography can't be described in any other way except from masterfully done. Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman act to perfection and make absolutely believable and unique characters. Andrew Scott is once again terrific as the villain Moriarty and Amanda Abbington - as Mary Watson. The idea and performance of this Christmas special are incredible and lift up the expectations for the next season.
My rate of The Abominable bride, of course, is 10/10 and in my opinion it is a worthy candidate for Sherlock's best episode ever made.
