Superman & Lois: Closer (2023)
First two seasons were good. Third season is LOIS HAS CANCER
No superheroes. Practically no action. Just sad CANCER treatments. Got a few episodes in and abandoned this crap. This is NOT about Superman. It's about a woman dying and a family grieving. Watch Grays anatomy or some hospital show of you want that. They do it better.
Superman actually says that even if Kryptonian science could cure cancer that he can't risk the implications for Earth. What terrible writing and total disregard for Superman's ideals and principles.
If this show can survive the terrible season, maybe they will come up with something interesting in the future but trust me, skip season three.
Shaft (2019)
Lots of fun and laughs
First of all, there is a good story and it moves along at a good pace.
Then, there's Shaft. Cool as ever and paired with a millennial son. Great chemistry between the actors. Funny dialogue and nice balance of action and plot.
It's a very fun movie and what else do you want but to be entertained? Enjoy this flick!
Chi-Raq the Series (2015)
Excellent acting highlights well written stories from Chicago
The acting is excellent and each character on the show has a very well defined personality there are several twists and turns. It is sort of like a "Dallas" or "Dynasty" night-time drama set in Chicago.
These are great stories. How would your family function (or disfunction) if your roots were in urban-Chicago?
The lives of two families come together in the pilot of this new independent series. We follow an 18 year old returning to his childhood home in Chicago to finish his senior year in high school. Living with his grandfather, a Pastor, we meet his two uncles. One is a gang-leader who has just got out of prison and his brother, the boys other uncle, is a dedicated Chicago police officer. The boy's mother who walked out on him and his father when he was about 10 years old, is back in the picture seeking a place in his life and some sort of forgiveness.
The other family we meet at a birthday party for their son who is turning 18. He has a 4.1 GPA in high school and his mother wants him to go to college. He is leaning towards the gang life.
What we see are families, just like any of ours, with issues between siblings and pressures from all around on everyone, but at the end of the day, it's not money, crime, hate or the gangs that bind the characters together; it is that they are family.
You need to remember that this is an independently produced series without a huge budget. Some of the sound quality, especially in the beginning of the pilot is distracting from what is going on. Suspend your expectations of seeing a slick Hollywood-type series. You are here for the story.
Hang in there a few episodes and I think you will be glad you did. IMDB lists the title as Chi-Raq the Series but I have heard people call the show "No Chi-Raq".
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014)
Great movie! They did it right.
Given the pathetically low advertising done for this movie, I had pretty low expectations going in last night. My 14 year old daughter came with me. (I think she went out of pity so I wouldn't be going alone!) What a surprise! The jokes were funny and well timed. The action was well carried out and not done just for the sake of having a fight scene. Nothing seemed forced or trying too hard. They really did a nice job.
Megan Fox's April is a tough girl looking to make it as a New York City reporter. Fox's acting is spot on and the pace at which she learns about the Turtles makes the whole thing as believable as it can be for someone meeting Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles :-) Here's something that made this movie terrific. The Turtles themselves were the most differentiated and developed characters that I've seen in any of the movies. The acting, script, and great costumes all contribute to letting you see their personalities and quirks in ways that I felt the previous films felt short on. I love the original movie but in this, their voices, height, mannerisms, etc., were all paid attention to and the movie took the time to let each of them become their own character. It is a great re-introduction to their individual personalities.
To her great surprise, my daughter loved it too. I am not sure why the studio doesn't seem to be marketing this film to the next generation.
It's a winner in my opinion! Go and enjoy!
