Poor continuity.
27 December 2021
I kept getting removed from the story by poor continuity. Lucy and Desi's hair would be coiffed, messy, then coiffed again. Ethel's dress is hanging off her shoulder, then not, then hanging.

The casting I think left a bit to be desired, but these people were long time character actors and not so easily mimicked.

Interesting from a historical perspective, but the whole production screams TV budget.

4 out of 10 stars.

Suffers from poor character development at almost every level and missing plot points
22 October 2021
Visually it's interesting, but it suffers from poor character development at almost every level and missing plot points. Jessica is a sniveling wench, Liet is never fleshed out and Paul never gives water to the dead, diminishing the great importance of water. We're also missing a major character at this point.

I've watched it three times trying to see if I would change my first impressions, but to no avail.

Reviews are good, but I can't trust them.

I also feel that if you are not familiar with Dune in some other way, a lot of the subtleties will just be lost.

I'm disappointed to say the least. 5/10.

A Great Fantasy Adventure For the Pandemic
6 April 2020
The story is a simple adventure, but it's just what is needed in these stressful times. Great New Zealand location filming, decent story and a good cast. If you want to just not think too hard and get lost in a fantasy adventure, then I think you'll enjoy Letter to the King. It's fun and it will let you escape the pandemic news for a few hours. Perfecto.

Swamp Thing (2019)

So far, fairly faithful to the comic book. Tragic that DC is cancelling.
10 June 2019
Pleasantly surprised at the high quality of production, acting, storytelling and the scariest music score to go along with it. A great cast including Virginia Madsen and Will Patton make this a must see. With heavy hitters, Len Wiseman (Underworld) and Mark Verheiden ( Netflix's Daredevil, SyFy's Battlestar Galactica and Dark Horse Comic's Aliens and Predator series). The influence of Alan Moore (The Watchmen) is there too. I had big hopes after the first two episodes, only to find out today that the series will be cancelled after 10 episodes. It's too bad, this is one of the best adaptations DC has had to offer in TV or film. I imagine the cost and the rumors of creative differences have led to this. If you get a chance check it out, you won't be disappointed.

Generic Dialog and Cost Effective Sets
12 April 2019
I just couldn't get into the poor character development and horrible dialog. Such as, "You need a friend.", "You think you can beat me?" I lived and worked in SF for a decade. Most of it on the edge of China Town. The sets are too clean for that era of China Town. A lot is green screen, with not a cloud in the sky. It's SF for christ's sake! It's always foggy and cloudy! I'm a huge fan of Banshee, Bruce Lee and MA movies, but Banshee and Bruce Lee's films seemed smarter than what I'm seeing here. Between the über tidy background visuals, lazy dialog writing, ill fitting music selections and lack of character development, I just can't get into it. I'm going to watch a couple more episodes and hope for the best, but if it doesn't improve I'm out.

Excellent Docudrama
18 November 2018
I think the keyword here is docudrama. Is the series 100% accurate? No, it can't be, we weren't there and most of the history of the times came from the Romans themselves. That said, it had well acted and engrossing stories that made me do much additional reading on the significant characters. It was enlightening, fun and entertaining to boot. If I was a teacher and wanted to get young adults interested in Roman history, I would definitely use this as an introduction. I highly recommend.

What... The... Hell
30 September 2018
Okay, if you went to see this you're probably an established fan. If you didn't, save your money, it will be on Netflix by Christmas. Why so bad? First of all, I'm reminded of a Japanese anime plot format where the reasoning for the action is explained in the first two minutes and then it's just a shootem' up from there. So many scenes are just absurd to the point of being ridiculous. Men in black, "Doctor come with us, leave your dog." She leaves with the mysterious agents and doesn't give two thoughts about the dog? Upon entering a high security facility the Predator's helmets and gauntlets are on display in the entryway like in a high school trophy case. Which, by the way, turns out to be a bad idea. And who thought that a Disneyesque Predator Hound was a good idea? Oh I know, Jar Jar Binks. I really liked Predators 2010. I was hoping for more of that. I should have known when I saw the 12 foot tall Predator in the trailer. Why not just make him 20 feet tall? Or Godzilla tall. Wow. What a waste of everyone's time.
