Teen Titans: Things Change (2006)
Cliffhangers... Gotta Love Them
Great fan of cliffhangers. It leaves you wondering for more along the way... And that's exactly the point with BB's character arc.
Terra clearly doesn't want anything to do with Beast Boy. She makes herself clear: "Things change, Beast Boy. The girl you want me to be is just a memory."
The connection between both Terra and Beast Boy is felt. You feel his heart sinking as Terra tells him what has become of their relationship. And it's true. Beast Boy's heart was broken, and it is... Perhaps now it might be a good time to mend it.
For one, it opens up an interesting arc with Beast Boy and Raven were Season 6 made to be set in stone. Not only does this allow Beast Boy to flood again to the open market, but possibly find something that he never knew he had all along. Beast Boy helped Raven with Malchior. Added Greg Cipes (and Tara Strong) have been hinting that if Season 6 were to happen, BB and Raven would be a "huge deal." And it should be. They've sprinkled hints throughout the series that they had some sort of affection for each other, and it would end with Beast Boy (possibly) choosing Raven over Terra.
It redefines a "ship" in the series, but it also does set the end mark for the Beast Boy/Terra relationship when Beast Boy yells the word "over." This is the end of their love affairs and the Teen Titans... but perhaps it's not.
This episode wasn't to end the series, but was to set up something far greater... But only time will tell. It wasn't the best episode, but you understand where they're coming from with the cliffhanger. And oh boy, what a cliffhanger it was.
Teen Titans: Titans Together (2006)
Perfect Ending a Comic Relief Character Arc
I didn't know what to expect after the amazing Season 4 arc surrounded by the Raven and the end of the world, but Beast Boy's season is ultimately realized and fulfilled in this episode.
To be fair, Beast Boy continued his rummage and toils throughout the first four seasons, and although he shows hints of maturity, he remains a static character, often focusing on being the go-getter and jokester of the team. Sure, he can be serious (Spellbound) at times, but often, he finds his way out of seriousness and goes back to his old self, either ruining moments or making a bad joke out of it.
At the end of this episode, he does make a bad joke... but it was worthwhile and meaningful. Garfield Logan, of all people, brought up a team of rag-tag superheroes and used his plan to defeat the Brotherhood of Evil, a team that has been constantly messing with him since his time in the Doom Patrol. His leadership and the fact that he cleaned up Robin's, yes ROBIN'S mess showed us that he was a character worth fighting for. No longer is he the pipsqueak, lackadaisical child, but one who has clearly matured and grown up. Mento, the superhero who adopted him, would certainly be proud of an accomplishment.
This also opens up his character arc with the team. With the defeat in hand, not only again, does it show his leadership skills, but there's more to it than the stupid jokes he puts up with, and I'm pretty sure a pale-skinned empath would take notice of such a feat.
Nonetheless, this was Beast Boy's finest hour. He showed he had the skills to take down an enemy haunting him since he joined the Doom Patrol and the maturity and will to act upon his tactics.
