Sure theres moving colorful images that will keep the kiddies focused (mosty, there were a few kids in my theatre that didnt enjoy it but kids are even more fickle than adults) but nothing more. Things just happen with no background and no setup just to create action scenes (looking at you bear-on-rollar-coaster scene). The heavy themes mentioned in other reviews are there but they dont do anything with them. Its a film about overcoming tragedy, but theres actually no tragedy. Its a film about depression, except there really isnt any lasting depression. Its actually a soulless cartoon meant to sell your children on the already in production nickelodion series based on it, nothing more.

Got to see it last year at the Heartland Film Festival and very much enjoyed myself. For a first time writer-director I thought Nia DaCosta did a terrific job. Tessa Thompson is always great but I was very happily surprised by Lily James! I had no idea that she was Cinderella in the live action remake. All around good film, cant imagine why people on imdb dont seem to like it.

This is a hilarious film, one worthy of redlettermedia or the like. The acting, oversimplified theme that is restated ad nauseum, the ridiculous premise its all fantastic! It would get a higher score but it carries some of the scariest teachings ive seen in a modern day film let alone a christian one!! The nice christians giving it 10/10 dont seem to realize all the other scary messages within (science the contradicts the bible is always wrong, it is you duty to assert yourselves into others buisness to correct their moral standard to get them into heaven). It is the worst of the faith. Literally everone they talk to has never heard of the lord before... this is not reality its more invented nonsense to back up the films flawed internal logic.

Absolutely astounding! Fortunate enough to see it at Heartland and am trying to see it at its final showing there again! Great depiction of Appalachian peoples and a great film. My one complaint was that the clips of media portrayals of hillbillies were so long and unobstructed that it was hard not to laugh at them and feel bad for it (which actually may have been the point...).
