The Lost Symbol (2021)
Just read the book
Save yourself the time by reading the book instead. It makes way more sense and is nonstop start to finish. Making the book into a series was a mistake since there isn't enough story to stretch across 10 episodes. What happens is what you've gotten with the show, most of the Masonic story is buried with the "love story" between Robert and Kat. The show removes all of the fascinating storyline that takes place in her lab, which, in the book, makes her character more tolerable and like-able. The actor playing Langdon is a bit of a dead fish for me, there's no mirth or feeling imo.
The book in this case is just the way to go.
Renfield (2023)
Fun from start to finish!
This film is exactly what you think it is and maybe a bit better. Don't try to analyze or critique the character development, blah blah blah. Just sit back and enjoy the ride. Nicholas Hoult, as always, continues to impress and charm just as Nicolas Cage is himself and does not disappoint. Awkwafina's performance pleasantly surprised me. It is clear that the entire cast and film crew really had fun with this story. Don't listen to naysayers or film critics, find out for yourself! Full of action and all the funnies, with very important underlying messages - you are enough! Give it a watch. You're welcome.
Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
Just give it a chance
I can honestly say I expected this movie to be campy and riddled with issues, the cgi cheetah that is Barbara comes to mind. However I decided to watch it all the way through and just take it with a grain of salt and the message is the real take away. You can't always get what you want in life and you can't worry about what others have. You have to be true to yourself and accept your life for what it is. I know how this sounds but it's honestly the truth. I think the message is one to heed especially now in times of technology, global pandemic, and the facade that is social media. I could say a lot more about the issues with this film but there are enough negative reviews to read that already cover it.
Maybe just try to watch it without over analyzing or picking it apart with no expectations and see what you think.
The Flight Attendant (2020)
Kind of fun but just meh
I've read lots of reviews on here and agree with many high rated and low rated reviews. I think Kaley Cuoco took a risk playing this character and she does quite well, her character is a total Garbage person and I have zero sympathy for her. I actually enjoyed the supporting cast and loved the little twist at the end.
Was her trying to play detective outrageous and unbelievable? Yes.
Was the fact that she could remember certain important details ridiculous given that she's always drunk? Yes.
However, let's just play the suspension of disbelief card since she's been drinking since childhood and looks as good as she does and keeps a steady job.
Was it good enough that I'd watch another season? Not sure.
One thing I do know, I'm glad Buckley made it- lots of opportunities there.
The Alienist: Angel of Darkness: Labyrinth (2020)
Something is off with this season
I'm not quite sure why this season is so heavy with Dakota Fanning's characters Sarah. She's in just about every scene. It's called The Alienist, not the detective agency. Everything feels disjointed with the three of them and seems slower paced, making for not good tv. I feel like nothing is happening and yet I can't follow some scenes that are shown without being confused.
I want to love this season, since season one was brilliant but it's proving difficult as of episode 4.
Bad Times at the El Royale (2018)
Best movie I've seen in a while.
Didn't even realize the total run time of the film because I was engrossed from start to finish. Very pleased with the outcome of the film, with the exception of Miles.
Everyone is exceptional in their role and the story line doesn't disappoint.
I wanted the movie to keep going!
Chambers (2019)
No Season 2 Please - Unless it's without "Sasha/Lilith"
Gave this 4 stars bc Uma Thurman and Tony Goldwyn are amazing, as expected. I liked all of the ancillary characters and actors. I did not like Sasha or Becky, or the actresses portraying them, which led me to not care about either of them living or dying. Was more interested in the Navajo/Dine, Annex, and Elliot storyline. The mystery is what kept me hanging on until the very disappointing ending that's been so overplayed- Lilith inhabiting a vessel, men bad, women all powerful blah blah blah. I am female and I'm so tired of this female empowerment wave being shoved down my throat. None of the female characters being portrayed in films/tv shows today represent real feminism. They are all written as vapid male bashers trying to prove they are better than men in every way and act entitled to all the world.
That being said,
Let me address the dumbest part of this plot. Girl electrocutes herself and the only organ not damaged is her heart. Then you want me to believe the heart is possessed and physically changes the body it's in to that of the donor?
Ugh, I really wanted this to be good and different. I really love supernatural stories but when u add in a horrible lead actress and overplayed cult storyline, it's hard for me to stay interested.
Was really wanting more Native American involvement in regards to the plot, I would have been more invested.
The Mummy (2017)
Enjoyed parts but not enough to like the movie.
Had more hope for this movie since I typically disagree with poor reviews. There was way too much going on to enjoy the mummy storyline, which was the most interesting part. Sofia and Jake Johnson get the least screen time and are the only ones that shine. The two main actors I found to be cheesy and their lines weren't good. I didn't buy their relationship one bit bc there was no chemistry and no build up. I wanted Jenny to be killed pretty early on in the film, then figured out the boring pedestrian ending. Tom Cruise's character falls apart at the end with his "inner good man" and his struggle to beat the God of Death - when his body is just supposed to be a vessel, implying he's not home, not himself anymore after the stabbing ritual.
Inserting Dr. Jekyll really threw the movie off and I lost interest very quickly. ***Maybe the dark universe storyline gets hinted at after credits role and leave viewers intrigued and liking where it's going, instead of what we saw.***
The best part of the movie is Jake Johnson's character being brought back. Talk about talent being flushed down the toilet.
I feel like this movie couldn't figure out what it wanted to be, I certainly couldn't.
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (2018)
Teen Drama - not what I expected
Like many reviews that have been posted, I was disappointed with this series. I knew the tv show and liked it but Netflix presented this as a more adult darker version. The adult actors and storyline were the only thing that kept me interested in viewing until the end. The social justice and extreme feminist messages are very off putting and caused me to lose interest a few episodes in.
I thought that Netflix would have avoided the "teenage" feel and made a more true to life feeling show(like Sabrina signing the book the first time as an acceptance of adulthood and understanding life isn't always about getting what u want) I understand Sabrina is a teenager and she's essentially "growing up" thru the first season. However, the messages of female superiority and warriors of social justice is being forced down the viewer's throats.
I will be the first to admit that I'm just too mature for the subject matter, it doesn't land well.
