Big Wars (1993 Video)

Did we watch the same movie?
14 July 2015
This movie is very good, especially compared to other similar-themed anime made during the same era. It has much more 'realism,' in spite of the sci-fi scenario, and less goofiness like stare-downs and people flying through the air and remaining motionless at the same time.

In a way, it's more like a regular war / action / spy movie all wrapped into one and published in anime format. You get terrorism, mind-control, secret agents, an alien race that refer to themselves as 'gods' and claims to be mankind's clreators, quite convincing alien technology ship and aircraft action, close combat including power-armor, a traumatized hero and more. The story, however, is pretty straight-forward and not confusing in a bad way, as in many other anime.

What I like most about it is how the movie's creators very effectively gave it an epic feel, as if it were part of something bigger. The references to the past are well-done, well-tied into the story and makes the viewer long for more. It could well have been made into a Daisenki universe anime trilogy plus an ova series. Actually, after watching it, I googled if there were something like that, sadly it turns out there is only the movie.

One could argue that the movie does not have the production standards to warrant a score of 9, but I think that this actually adds to its charm. If you like serious sci-fi military-themed anime and don't mind or actually appreciate the 80's / early 90's feel, then give this one a view.

An ordeal that does not even get rewarded....
13 February 2009
The movie "Noriko's Dinner Table" is a long movie. And it is not one of those movies that make you forget that they are long because they are exciting, gripping, thrilling, funny,... It's just long, bland, and boring.

The main pseudo-philosophical question of Noriko's Dinner Table is a simple one: "Are you connected to yourself?" The question is easily answered: I am myself, therefore I am connected to myself. So why does it take two and a half hours to try to somehow explore this question?

The movie is just like the question: pointless. Furthermore it's disturbingly sick because characters act in totally unnatural ways. But not even that in an interesting way. I can't believe that this movie got only favorable reviews. Honestly I expected something special. There was nothing of that sort.
