Dark, Funny, and Beautiful
It's an absolute shame that the rating is so low! This is such a unique and fun movie! And I'm not even trying to kiss it's a*# or anything, I'm 100% serious.
It manages to be dark but with enough quirk and humor to not be depressing all the way through. You have fun but then you're reminded that the situation that the kids are in is really heart wrenching. The visuals alone are outstanding. It's one of the most visually unique movies I've ever seen, and I've seen stuff like Swiss Army Man, The Handmaiden, and Scott Pilgrim.
If you love weird movies that have a lot of passion behind them then PLEASE check this movie out.
Mutafukaz (2017)
Smooth west coast fun...but flawed too
As a person that keeps up with Gkids new releases, I was excited to see this movie, it looked like a sleek gta movie, which for the most part it is. Let me break it down a bit
Characters: The main character Leon is a little bland but he gets the job done, Vinz voices by rapper Vince staples does a good job of being a likable cool best friend.......and the characters kinda end there, the girl is just....there, she's really just there to be the savior angel at the end. The villains? I really couldn't care about them, the main villain with the golden gun is fine. I'm not really gonna talk about Willy because he was just comic relief
Art: French art and animation proves to be unique and sleek, it's fun and engaging to watch
Music: a mixture of west coast hip hop and dubstep keeps the energy up
Story: Now, as much I like the fun bits of this movie, the story? We start off solid, you want to know more about the world, but man does it dip in quality sometimes. The fun chase scenes or fighting scenes are great, the moments of banter between Leon and Vinz, cool. But it has moments like the introduction of the wrestlers, that are skippable. I had a lot of fun with the first half, but I actually turned the movie off during the second half because it got too serious and fake deep for its own good. I did come back and just skip until Vinz and Leon were back to doing their thing. There's really nothing too special here with the story and some plot points feel unneeded. But if you just watch the fun parts of the movie then it's a nice watch
Verdict: it's always nice to see fluid 2d animation so I'm a little more lenient with this movie. The story isn't the best, it really drags at times. But! The fast paced gta like moments is what keeps this movie from bombing. I would recommend that when you watch this movie, to skip the wrestler intro and when Leon is at the secret organization.
Steven Universe: The Movie (2019)
Flawed but also good
I've been watching the progression of the Steven universe series from afar, never really taking the time to watch it, but keeping up to date in case I found a really interesting reason to watch. I still won't watch it because of its flaws, I'll stick to listening to the soundtrack and looking at its art.
So now onto the review of the movie, it's a solid movie, although it's going to be confusing for those who don't know Steven universe. I love spinel, her voice acting was amazing and I thought she was an interesting character. The songs are bops, the animation is solid, the characters though? Honestly, only spinel and Steven got character development, everyone else was kinda thrown to the side, especially Connie, who was just there to kiss Steven on the cheek and then dip.
I think that people who know a bit about Steven universe will enjoy this movie, but I think that long time fans will be disappointed.
Characters: I liked Steven becoming mentally and physically tired and spinel bouncing between being hurt and spiteful to wanting friendship and love. But it feels like both of their problems got quickly solved with a song, even spinel says that you can't fix everything with a song, but that's exactly what happened. I feel like the movie should've ended on a more bittersweet tone, like spinel decides that she needs to learn how to find love for herself be happy too, I just feel like her going with the diamonds at the end isn't going to help her fully, she's once again living for others. I just feel like the end game message was "if you're hurt from past abuse, don't worry, someone will eventually make everything better for you!", I think it could've sent a message of learning self love and how to turn pain into inner strength.
Art: the art is solid, nice colors, nice designs, spinels design was especially nice
Music: It has some total bops but pearls solo song was just kind of unnecessary and boring. The music works, and there's a diversity, some somber ballads, some broadway like songs.
Verdict: despite my gripes with this movie, I still really like it because it's different and it has some great highlights. But if you're a long time fan, you might want to lower your expectations a bit due to many characters lacking screen time and the treatment of pink diamond. For people that don't know Steven universe well, just enjoy the visuals, music, and voice acting. I think this movie works best for people that know parts of Steven universe but not everything
Mandy (2018)
Artsy Fun Slasher
I'm going to start this off by saying if you don't like art house or trippy movies, then you probably won't like this. However, I think it's a fun, campy, sometimes really pretty movie. The premise isn't crazy original but it's visuals, Nick cage, campy violence, and the vibe is what saves this from being dull. The beginning is a little slow but it eventually kicks off. It's like stranger things mixed with David Lynch. It's not a perfect movie, but it's a fun and cool watch, especially if you're bored. It's really 80's slasher campy, if that's you're kinda thing then totally give this one a shot
YOLO: Crystal Fantasy (2020)
Enjoyable and funny but not for everyone
I'm gonna start off with saying that no, this is not a show for everyone, so I completely understand if some people don't like it. But personally, I really enjoy it, it has a weird style of comedy, I like both Rachel and Sara(more so Rachel), and it has a crude yet somewhat appealing art style, what can I say? It's something different, it's absurd, but enjoyable. I'm glad that the show doesn't rely on a bunch of sex jokes or toilet humor, it's nice to see adult swim give other indie/small creators like this a shot. Give it a shot, if you don't like it then try some of adult swims other indie shows.
Relic (2020)
Should've just been a short indie horror game
To start off, I've read a lot of good reviews about this movie, so I was hopeful that it would be a promising first movie by a new director, but it's just......eh. Twenty minutes in and I wanted to watch the movie sped up, it felt slow and nothing was really happening, I think that it was trying to go for a slow build-up but it just didn't work for me. I didn't care about the characters, I knew little to nothing about the "ghost" or whatever the whole black ash stuff was, and there was really nothing new or unique about this movie, sorry that this seems harsh but I felt like I watched a live-action version of a run-of-the-mill indie horror game. The dream sequences felt like they meant nothing and they were just repeats of the same thing, a cabin in the woods, a glass window, and the grandmother. I'm just disappointed and confused about how this movie I wasted money on got so much praise.
It would've been fine as a short, indie, horror game, whispering voices, a few jump scares, and a few "TURN BACK" notes, and then an ending with a jumpscare. I get that it's supposed to also be a metaphor for Alzheimer's but I didn't really get to know the grandmothers past enough to feel bad for her memory loss, no flashbacks, pictures, or videos. I completely think that this movie would've been better off being a drama about a woman and her daughter dealing with the grandmother's Alzheimers instead of this weird supernatural mess. A good example of a movie that was able to perfectly do family drama and horror is "Hereditary", there were enough arguments and somber moments to keep your attention as a family drama and there were enough creepy moments to keep you interested in how the horror was going to play out. However, hereditary is a movie that took a lot of detail, money, and had a lot more behind it than this movie probably had, no offense of course.
But the director didn't use what they had to their best ability. On a positive note, I did think that there was one good emotional moment that displayed Alzheimer's, and I kind of liked the last scene in the movie even if I didn't understand what the hell it meant. But in the end, skip this one, keep your money, or watch a better movie instead.
Over the Garden Wall (2014)
Amazing Whimsical Journey
I don't normally write reviews but I felt that I had to when I finished watching this series.
Story: Some who aren't used to the fantasy genre might get confused at times but Over The Garden Wall is a show where you just accept things the way they are. If a frog wants to start singing a frog can start singing. The story has wonderful pacing, there are comedic moments to keep things light but also dark themes to keep it mysterious. It's not rushed nor is it very slow, it has just the right amount of calm or happy moments and sad or dark moments. The main goal seems very simple and clear but it's the journey that makes it so amazing. If the story had to be described in only two words it would definitely be Eerie and memorable
Music: The music is amazing, memorable, and perfectly suits the Halloween-like theme. Whether it's a cheerful moment or a sad and mysterious moment, the music doesn't fail to set the tone
Art: The beautiful art and animation really brings the story to life and makes you want hang pictures of the backgrounds on your walls. You can't get enough of the unique and unforgettable characters.
Acting: The voice actors delivered a performance that matches the high rating of the show. This is definitely of my favorite works by Elijah Wood.
I always worry when I watch a show that they will give it a bad ending but the ending was quiet satisfying While some may complain about the show being short, it actually suits the mini-series title. It needs to stay as a short yet sweet classic. The sad thing is that Cartoon Network doesn't make Emmy-worthy shows like this anymore. Now we have shows like Uncle Grandpa that make you wonder where did it all go wrong. Hopefully instead of shamelessly using poorly executed and ridiculous shows like Teen Titans Go to make their money, they will go back to making shows like this.
