gotta agree, deep state fingerprints all over this
21 December 2019
NSA mentioned. GCHQ mentioned. Useless press mentioned. A whistleblower who isn't Edward Snowden, mentioned. But no CIA?? Give me a break. The whole story isn't complete if the CIA isn't included. Makes me wonder if the CIA was behind the camera.

It's well written and has that cold war feel, which is great for a spy film. Watch for pleasure, but it's not necessarily the full story.

I was enjoying until S5/6
20 December 2019
I was enjoying this show, overlooking all the categories and labels being placed on the characters because the drama was good. It took me a while to figure out the MC who always seemed to be crying or yelling about something, or throwing herself to the ground. But in Seasons 5 and even more so in 6, the MC threw herself to the ground a few too many times a d wailed at pillows yet somehow managed to look good the next day, ready for court. Then, in season 6 they really piled on the cases the students fought and won. The stereotyping got over the top, to the point where the white people were just so cardboard cutouts it was getting sick. Can't these writers just write a good story without all the underlying preaching!? It died for me with all that.

A documentary that was WAY behind
18 August 2019
I don't even know why a documentary like this was made in the way it is. They are looking at the 2016 election, as though it was some conspiracy for the Trump Campaign to buys ads on Facebook. Obama was buying ads on Facebook in 2008! That's why I say this documentary is wayyyyy behind.

Trump's win is the only thing that got this researcher to wake up, and instead of looking into how far back social media is used by politicians in general, he just focuses on the 2016 election. Talk about bias - which doesn't say a whole lot about it being a balanced documentary.

It's not worth watching. Save your money for a far more deserving documentary that will look into how social media is being controlled by a whole lot of power merchants, and how Google is the worst of the Tech firms at spying and gathering data.

Don't do it to yourself unless ultra bored

Warning: Spoilers
I was really looking forward to seeing Renee Zellweger. Pilot was great and then it was downhill from there. At some points (especially in the last 3 episodes) I kept getting a deja vu feeling...old Danielle Steele made for TV dramas came to mind. And the SWJ messaging just got stronger and stronger too. We started laughing in the last 2 episodes as the story got more and more ridiculous. In fact, I started to wonder if this was a parody of some SJW tropes (virtue signalling was mentioned more than once). Oh, the unrealistic subplots! E.g. one wife tells her husband she's had an affair and after 10 seconds of disappointment, he's out to protect her from her former-lover-turned-stalker. Talk about Soy-boy! Super cringe-worthy and packed with leftist messaging and illogical story lines. Still, the production is good and Renee is the only person worth watching.

Great BUT!
31 August 2015
Great acting, great photography, setting and story! The creativity and imagination is a joy to watch.

I give this 2 stars due to the raunchy nature of the script, and its strong misogynistic elements that are in just about every episode. It seems to render this story much more a film of our age, rather than a timeless classic that it could be.

Incidentally, if this is a mirror of our times, then we are headed for some dark days indeed. Some say Frankenstein was pushing the boundaries back in the day, and the violent 70's screamer horror films was another genre that pushed the boundaries. Screamer horror films evolved, and those old screamers are a rare sight these days. The same will happen to this series. We will move on, and evolve. I'm glad I didn't invest my money in the production.

It makes me also quite sad to think the level of lack of respect shown in this series is required to gain public attention, which I don't believe is true. I think it cheapens the series, and is definitely unnecessary. My toes cringe every time a scene that is clearly sadistic and unnecessary comes on.

A great story, told well and photographed beautifully, is all that is needed.

This series has lost 2 viewers from my household after watching just Series 2 for these reasons. We doubt much will improve, and fear it will only get worse. After reading some reviews, it seems to be the case.

We'll be moving onto far more worthy programs such as True Detective and Penny Dreadful - great story telling, great acting, photography and scenes that remain in line with the story itself.

The Hobbit film trilogy will remain my firm favourite in terms of fantasy epics - a film that holds its integrity without relying on naked bodies and sadistic shock tactics to sell it.

Mixed emotions
18 January 2014
Went to see this film in its opening week since I have friends in the stockbroking world. I gotta say - this is way over the top. This film is the very definition of the kind of debauchery that MALEkind can muster akin to going to Africa to shoot elephants for the fun of it, or starting a paedo ring just because they can.

Did there have to be nearly 3 hours of unleashed debauchery to get the message across? No. We got the idea from the opening scenes. So, basically, Scorsese turns us, the audience, into bystanders who witnessed misogyny, drug addicts, sex addicts and the heartless conning and exploitation of the working and middle classes because they are 'too dumb' to know any better.

On the other hand, (my intellect kicks in to protect me from all the disgust), it is a black comedy (I assure myself). This genre contains exaggerations, caricatures and highly unlikely situations, and exists to twist and turn out emotions in various directions. That it does!

No doubt, this film is riding on the current public's vilification of bankers and stockbrokers. But, I hate to burst everyone's stereotyped bubbled: it just isn't like that in the stockbroking world these days. It hasn't been like that for the vast majority. But then, maybe the film is a general statement about society's greed in general, and how it has gotten out of hand.....even in Hollywood. At one point, it entered my mind that maybe some of the scenes in this film were taken from the lifestyles of celebrities in Hollywood!

DiCaprio is VERY good in this film. Jonas Hill's character got on my nerves as the obligatory friend that gets DiCaprio into more degradation than he would otherwise.

DiCaprio deserves on Oscar for his role; he was amazing whether he was giving an impassioned speech or alone, writhing on the floor recovering from his latest drug stupor. Fantastic.

unexpectedly excellent
16 April 2010
Hi just watched this film (waited for it to come out on DVD). I was very pleasantly enthralled. I enjoyed the Sherlock reinterpretation, and Watson's character. Ritchie managed to take out the old stuffy British thing, and replace it with fresh, vibrant modernity. I look forward to seeing the follow up - in cinema though this time!

OK - got to stretch this out to 10 lines otherwise this site doesn't publish. What can I say....Robert Downey Jr is looking hot. He has certainly kept fit - and no botox either. That's so refreshing to see. Jude Law also looks nice and normal - not like so many actors whose had plastic surgery these days.

Oh, and finally - I loved the dog (can't remember his name). English bulldog and all that. Great stuff.

great
7 January 2009
I have no idea why there are no many negative reviews of this quality thriller. It was a great film - particularly so because it is British (I tend to have low expectations of films coming from the UK). I get the sense that the British film industry must rely on good ideas, rather than explosive big budget scenes, and good acting. This film excels in good acting, and good story line / idea. It kept me thoroughly entertained and entranced. Sure, there are some similarities with Dead Calm, but it is a film of its own, and I hope to see more like this quality coming the British Industry. I'm sick to death of those dated, boring and sterile British costume Dramas OR Gangster films. This is a modern British film worth its salt - and glad to see my lottery contribution going to make entertaining films.

Some specifics that I really enjoy about British film is that females are equal or just as strong to the male counterparts. Indeed, films shouldn't even have such a polarity in this day and age, but Hollywood wants to keep up the polarity. I rarely ever see rape scenes in British films, and for this I love them. American films are just rampant with those kinds of scenes...which is meant to depict weak females or females that need to be rescued by a male...it's a theme that is well past its sell by date. It's old and sick! The British take on female roles is far more modern, realistic and closer to my comfort level. The reason I mention this is because the sex scene is tasteful though a bit explicit, where BOTH sexes are actually enjoying themselves, and this is a great aspect.

I also liked this film because it relies on script writing and not big budget gore scenes.

Finally, this film makes me appreciate European style film making far more than I have done. It just has the wonderful human quality, somewhat raw and real. LIKE IT!

most inspiring
2 October 2008
I've always liked the Rocky films, and have seen each and every one. This was the grand finale, and what a finale it was! I'm gonna be watching this one time and again. It had me cheering, crying, and cringing at the fight scenes. Absolutely loved it.

Also loved the old skool training. Watch it if you think you're getting too old to be who you are, do what you do, and love what you love. No one is ever too old...it's what's in the heart that matters.

Thanks Sylvester, for the great films.

what was that?
30 September 2008
OMG! The number of times I actually caught myself rolling my eyes! Not to mention the fact that I actually walked away to order my pet food online. I needed a break that bad! This has got to be one of the worst films I've seen this year. It had a promising cast, but just goes to show you that despite big name actors, doesn't guarantee a good film. The acting was fair, though I didn't sense that any of the actors had to stretch all that much to actually play in this film. Also, they didn't make that much effort as far as the accent lessons went. Ewan McGregor's brogue accent was peeping through, as was Jackson's Australian accent. A bit too sloppy for my liking.

The story was s unrealistic, especially when the girl kept popping up all over the place for no good reason. Hell, if I saw someone around ever corner, I'd think they're stalking me! Skip this one, or if you do watch it you'll finally be able to get all those errands done you've been neglecting.

Are you kidding me?
14 August 2008
The story was excellent, really good idea. But, I kept thinking as I watched the film (and I forwarded regularly) that I respect a good editor, and this film didn't have such a person on board.

The acting was alright. I couldn't tell if it was the acting or the editing that was the let down, probably more the editing but I can't say the acting helped matters. Oh, and the ending was a bit of a let down cliché. Tacky.

Standing ovation though at the opening? I think people were being nice and generous. The lead was good, nice face, but couldn't help but think that if he had a solid stylist, he'd have been smoother. A few of his lines were unrealistic, such as he's wooing the girl and he invites her round to his place, "....to meet his landlady." Who the hell is the landlady, and who the hell cares! Her level of importance only became obvious (perhaps a bit too obvious) three-quarters of the way through. Not very elegant. There were a couple of other what-did-he-just-say moments, and I pictured myself - if I were him - arguing with the writers for saying such nonsense.

Only worth a look if you want to see what not to do.

Don't waste your time
2 August 2008
Freddy Prince Jr., was alright - nothing special, but the girl who played Jill is just terrible! I couldn't stand looking at her the whole time, and I had to switch off the film. She is a terrible actress, could barely fake a smile, let alone her face looking evil. Those eyebrows are way-arched, and her smile is like some evil grin. She belongs in a horror flick.

Apart from the awful acting from the girl, there was just zero chemistry between the two actors. Both were distant and looked bored. The editor splashed a few scenes together to make it look like some fairytale romance was taking place, but it was so clear there was a whole lot of nothing happening between the two.

This film is one massive cliché - do not waste your time.

Great, if you're a 12 year old
29 August 2007
This is a run-of-the-mill film that - unless you are desperate and haven't seen a film in ages - it might just keep you entertained, just.

Th story was predictable, typical and nothing special. The photography sucked; the colours were dull and seemed to have an overcast of gray over the film PLUS there was constant camera shake. Well, it had to have something to keep this film alive and to keep the audiences eyeballs from falling asleep. Faux action is what this film should be categorised as!

I found myself regularly drifting off to far more interesting experiences I had earlier in the day.

I've seen way better action films, with smart story lines. This was meant for teenagers, or die-hard Bourne fans. Don't waste your money.

Better than expected
29 August 2007
I went on the off chance that this would be an OK film, as I had a Tuesday night to 'kill'. BOY, was I pleasantly surprised! Kevin Costner finally got out of those patriotic do-gooder yuck films where he was always such a hero, and this is a very good change for him. It was such a breath of fresh air to see him acting in a different kind of role, and so well done as well. I have a lot more respect for him now. It is some of the best acting I've seen in a long time in any film, recently.

Even Demi Moore was good for a change.

Yeah, it must have been the scriptwriters too that must get some credit here, and I for one will be following this scriptwriter in whichever other film he/she/they do.

I hope more and more of these types of films appear (or maybe not, otherwise I'd be at the cinema all the time).

Well done film. Excellent acting, excellent script, highly recommended.

depressing
2 March 2006
Downright depressing. I watch films to escape or to see the joyousness of life - basically this is about child abuse. We all know what that is - and the adults who do it are downright ILL. For that reason, this film is brilliant and depicts the mental illness in adults very well - and their inability to connect with their own compassion and understanding. Makes you realise that just because a person can have a child, doesn't mean they are a parent. Throws up the whole notion of family and how damaging it is for some people.

If anything this film could be used to force EVERYONE to take a parenting course and to be observed and examined in the action of parenting.

It was realistic - but sad, depressing and well, if you are in the mood of getting depressed, watch this one.

I was really wanting to see what the kid turned into as an adult. Just another junkie?? It leaves you dissatisfied completely in that respect.
