The Heartbreak Kid (2007)
Don't get deterred - Ben Stiller fans will love it!!
I saw it yesterday and laughed and laughed (and I'm not one to laugh at movies easily, believe me!!)!! Of COURSE it is stupid and OF COURSE it is outrageous -- but don't we love that in a good Ben Stiller comedy?? The cast was good, the plot development was good (I mean, somebody has to come up with all these twists!!) and Ben Stiller was, as always, adorable and hilarious. If you want art cinema, do not go watch this. If you want good entertainment, do go see it!! Oh, I would have preferred Cameron Diaz in the role of his new wife - that would have made it perfect, I guess. I did not particularly like the actress they cast, but other than that, F U N N Y!!!
Open Cam (2005)
Atrocious acting!!
I rushed to the cinema yesterday to make this movie (which was shown as part of the "Verzaubert" Gay Film Festival that takes place each year in the major German cities and which normally shows really good stuff. Anyway, I was looking forward to it (though I am female and straight, I find a lot of gay movies well made and interesting; something else from the usual Hollywood crap!!). However, even though I am definitely not an expert on acting, it was quite blatant even to me that this was extremely poor acting, by almost every character involved!! The lines sounded so studied, there was nothing spontaneous or witty about them. I did find the plot somewhat interesting, but it could have been made into a much better movie, in my opinion. I also did not find the actors particularly dishy, which surprised me as they normally have quite the lookers in gay movies !! I also did not see the necessity for the drawn-out and lengthy sex scenes -- what purpose did they serve?? I mean, this was not meant to be a porn movie, as far as I understood.... Anyway, I considered it a waste of time and money!!
Stromberg (2004)
Absolutely hilarious!!
This is a wonderful remake of the British original, which I unfortunately never had a chance to watch -- it certainly is great, too, I love British television, but as little as I normally like German TV, this show is GREAT!! The US version is pretty good, too, by the way -- in case anyone gets a chance to watch it. The protagonist (the Herbst guy) is definitely one of the funniest and most talented comedians Germany has ever had (and contrarily to what people, especially the Brits, will say, there have been quite a few!!) So, people, if you get a chance to watch this ( I suspect it is no longer on German television....haven't been able to watch German TV lately so I don't really know! But there's bound to be re-runs, at least I certainly hope so as this was basically the only thing I was trying to watch on a regular basis. Sorry for going on and on,but the rules for this forum are that comments have to consist of at least 10 lines (don't know why!!)
