Andor (2022)
Wow. Give this show a shot.
I wasn't expecting much from this show. The last two Star Wars shows (Kenobi & Boba Fett) I had mixed feelings about but this show is already off to strong start with great quality and drama. However it's too early to tell if this will be on the same par as Mandalorian.
I appreciate how it follows Rogue One's lead and maintains that dark, gritty tone, however there a few moments when some people may find it distressing. At times I got vibes from Blade Runner and heck even DUNE (2021), but it's welcoming and doesn't feel out of place.
I know it's a spin-off show for a character of a spin-off movie, but so far (episodes 1-3) it's a good start and worth checking out.
Shingeki no Kyojin: From You, 2000 Years Ago (2022)
What have you done Eren Yeager?
I simply do not have words to describe this show anymore. It's beyond what I have ever anticipated and no, I haven't read the manga. The previous episode was shocking enough, but this one breaks things down enough for the audience to make a conclusion fans (those who haven't read the manga) have speculated but now can determine beyond reasonable doubt: Eren Yeager is now officially a villain. It's always tricky making the protagonist into the bad guy but this show has done a masterful job of not only showing his motivations but making his fall from grace an intriguing transition from the hero his comrades thought he'd be, into the antagonist who wants to punish the world for his suffering. Once you've seen this masterpiece you'll be left in terrified wonder: where will this cycle of violence and struggle take these Eldians now that the Rumbling has begun?
Star Wars: Visions (2021)
Good first season!
The Music Band, The Twins, and the Astro Boy were the only ones that are hard to sit through since they feel directed to a younger audience. All the other episodes were average or better with 2 or 3 of them being amazing. Good start for this series, but at times they suffer from one of the things that made the Sequel Trilogy so agonizing which was copy and paste plot/dialogue from previous Star Wars content. "I've got a bad feeling about this..." was said more times than I could count, and while I still loved the reference the last episode was Anakin's fall to the dark side rehashed. If you're into that stuff don't let me stop you from enjoying it, I just wanted to see the Star Wars Universe be taken in a direction we haven't seen yet but it appears Disney wanted to play it safe with familiar content. Despite that it's still entertaining and worth a watch, looking forward to next season.
Star Wars: Visions: The Ninth Jedi (2021)
They need to continue this story
Great story, fans of Star Wars Rebels should recognize the fulcrum reference (hint: clothing). The way this ended it feels like they'll continue this story but if not it's still one of the best episodes of the first seasons. Action was great, interesting story, and in the end you just want more.
Star Wars: Visions: T0-B1 (2021)
For kids
Or if you grew up watching Astro Boy then you'll love this, just felt too kid friendly to me but the action was entertaining.
Star Wars: Visions: Akakiri (2021)
Echoes Anakin's fall
What I loved about this episode is how this reflects Anakin Skywalker's fall to the dark side. He envisions someone he cares about die, then is compelled to join the dark side in order to save them. Only this time the Jedi in question uses his dark side powers gained through his new master to save his deceased friend but falls to the dark side nonetheless. However, the animation wasn't great and felt subpar to most of what we've seen in this first season. Good ending to the first season, definitely looking forward to a second one.
Star Wars: Visions: Lop & Ochô (2021)
Weird characters, good story
Loony tunes bunny character with cliché dialogue is my main issue with this. Like the Astro boy one, this just feels derivative of another cartoon character. Story and setting was still interesting though: in a shogun like society, a non-blood family member trying to save her adopted family was compelling to watch and I hope we see a continuation of this episode. I just wished they were more creative with the appearance of the main character instead of copying Looney Tunes.
Star Wars: Visions: The Duel (2021)
Just amazing, I want more
I could spend all day complimenting this episode. Wasn't a fan of the animation at first but I grew to love it as the lightsaber duel intensified. The umbrella sabers was a neat sequence to watch, the action in this one is by far the best in this first season. The samurai/western theme was perfected in this episode; sadly they repeat this theme too much throughout this series but at least this one felt the most authentic.
Star Wars: Visions: The Twins (2021)
Cool action, good message, that's it
The only creative element to this one is the action. The sequence with the six sabers that are used as whips was cool but that was it. The message echoes what we've heard before in Star Wars about destiny, and once again in the end this felt geared towards a younger audience. The twins are just two ordinary looking teenagers fighting over a Kyber crystal and the meaning of their fates, so sadly nothing unique or special with this one but not super cringy like episode two with the music band.
Star Wars: Visions: Tatooine Rhapsody (2021)
Worst one so far...
If you like cringy pop rock music then you might enjoy this episode, but this feels mostly directed towards kids. Just hard to watch after seeing a samurai/western setting with intense action, then we get a random kid-friendly episode like this. Wish they were more creative with the music instead of some mainstream pop rock content. But hey if that's your thing knock yourself out.
