I loved this movie. It is a beautifully understated love story that simply unfolds an emotional depth that is superbly portrayed by both leads who unmask their own unique personalities in what is obviously a deeply loving relationship.
The issue of young teen sweethearts coming of age is really common and a critical juncture for many of these relationships. The deep dependence starts to reveal aspects of co-dependence which is really what ignites the doubts of both individuals as they start to re-assess their futures alongside the important practical decisions regarding their professional careers and long term plans together.
In the end we become aware of a young man who needs to explore life further, and a very loving yet still very immature young woman who becomes certain that she needs to feel completely loved or she herself knows she can't commit.
The latter issue is beautifully dealt with, and in the end both Dan and Mel face the truth. Her over dependence pushed him away. She realizes this and then comes to understand his need to be free and her own need to deal with her own personal issues.
Really well done.
