nukes New York to prevent a nuclear war
20 January 2013
Warning: Spoilers
It took me about 50 years to come to a realization. The President orders the nuking of New York City to compensate for the accidental nuking of Moscow. Taking out New York City was to prove the attack on Moscow was not intentional. The question is that since Moscow was/is the capitol of the USSR/Russia did the President chicken out by not nuking Washington the capitol of the U.S. instead of New York City ?????? Is it possible that even at that time (I was in high school) that the adult population wouldn't have minded the nuking of Washington D.C. so much as the nuking of New York City ???? Other than that question I loved the scenes involving the B-58s. I was my favorite bomber. Unfortunately it had high maintenance needs with associated down times which kept it from becoming as widely used as the B-52s and B-47s. I think that showing the Russian kids at play and their mom's as well as they showed the New York people would have helped the anti-war sentiment.

attempt at realism, so to speak
2 November 2006
HI,

Practically every thing in the movie was taken from UFO encounters of some sort reported through the previous years.

Whether it was the type of uniform, the insignia, the concept of guardians, the type and location (somewhat) of the base, etc. you get the idea, was made to resemble UFO contact reported information.

For me the most catching part of the movie was when one of the robots said "I think I can." when responding to a request for assistance from a guardian vessel under attack.

It came out shortly after one of the star wars movies and was labeled in the press as a "star wars" ripoff wannabe.
