Catfish: The TV Show: Nick and England (2022)
Catfish must have been desperate for content
Catfish must have been desperate for content to air this episode. These guys were talking for only 2 months and there was literally nothing that indicated that England might be a catfish. It was clear that he just wasn't that into Nick. Nick fabricated some weird narrative that England must be a "sugar baby" based on nothing. Then Catfish actively deceives England to get him to drive 2 hours to meet with a fake potential client. If I were in England's place I would feel so insulted and creeped out that Nick and Catfish deceived me and intruded into my life like that. I would probably just walk away and say "don't call me again."
The Future Of: Life After Death (2022)
Interesting but lighter on info than I'd hope
I love learning about alternative burial and memorial practices, so this episode was right up my alley.
The only thing I was kind of disappointed with was their lack of explanation on exactly how the DNA technology links with their proposed plant memorials. Are they saying the plant would be like a computer storing the info? And, if so, if the plant dies, then so does the memory of the person? I wish they'd have gone into more detail to clarify what they were talking about, and how those two concepts are linked.
I very much appreciated what they said about social media and how our own data belongs to powerful corporations that never intended, foresaw, or were trained to be the caretakers of (digital) human remains. It's an important issue that not enough people are talking about. I added Elaine Kaskets book to my to-read list because I want to know more about it.
Concussion (2015)
Deeply inspiring & significant story, unrelatable & unrealistic film
This story is so inspiring and so medically significant, I wish I liked the movie more. At times it feels like the scriptwriters sacrificed relatability and realism just for the sake of cheap drama. And, completely unexpectedly, it felt like they were trying contort this story to fit a white American Christian perspective of the world by inserting "god's will" talk wherever possible. They were out-of-touch with the true message of this story - work hard, be intellectually honest regardless of how hard it hurts, and don't let the louder voices (and richer hands) silence you.
All that being said, do watch the movie because more people need to pay attention to the outcomes of Dr. Omalu's work. This story is not over. People are still getting hurt and I don't see much being done about it.
Get Organized with the Home Edit: Drew Barrymore & An Atlanta Pantry (2022)
This episode makes me want to redo my pantry
A double whammy for kitchen organization. It made me want to redo my pantry! I just wish their bins weren't so expensive otherwise I'd be buying up a ton of them.
Get Organized with the Home Edit: Winnie Harlow & A Little Girl's Bedroom (2022)
Two Little Girls Rooms
Not my favorite set of reveals. They basically did two little girl rooms, except one of them was for a grown woman. And somehow the actual little girl's room looked more professional.
Stuart Little 2 (2002)
Models maladaptive family dynamics
This film not only models maladaptive family dynamics (such as frequent dishonesty and belittling the mother as "over-reacting" when her child has a near-death experience), but it also presents them as if they're wholesome.
The Selters Escape (2021)
Interesting Interview, Overdramatized "Escape"
The actual "escape" was a little over-dramatized for my taste. And this film's classification as a "documentary" is generous; I'd call it more of a long-form interview special, with extra clips. But, I really did enjoy hearing Ben's story. He was clearly broken up over needing to lie to his friends, which speaks to his character. I hope he finds some closure and is able to enjoy his new-found freedom.
Ask an Atheist: Blasphemy is a Victimless Crime (2020)
Highly Educational
Super educational, perhaps a little long, but it's warranted for such a weighty topic.
Harriet (2019)
Over-emphasis and over-dramatization of prophetic visions calls into question credibility of entire film
I would have given this movie 8 or 9 stars if it weren't for its portrayal of Tubman having vivid prophetic visions which dictated her actions and helped her feign death and capture on multiple occasions. Although it's historically accurate that she reported having visions from God after her traumatic brain injury, none of her purported visions were as precise or significant as the ones from the movie. Her real visions were vague and more dream-like. In real life her friends and family were not convinced that they really were prophetic; whereas, in the movie, multiple people were convinced God really was talking to her and dictating her actions. This overly fantastical portrayal cheapens an otherwise powerful and historically significant story, and it calls into question the credibility of the whole film.
The Good Place: Live Panel Discussion (2020)
My Family Owes You Our Freedom
I was born and raised in a religious cult. Everyone I knew and loved, including my husband, was in it. I couldn't leave because, if I did, I would have been shunned and, worst, my husband would have probably divorced me.
The first time I saw this series, something told me that it was exactly what my husband needed to finally push him over the edge and wake him up from his indoctrination. And I was right. Your show was the final catalyst that he needed. Long story short....we left the cult. As we watched this final episode he turned to me and said "this show changed my life."
For me personally, the entire series has been a twisted emotional journey. I have CPTSD from my cult, and have trouble understanding the world around me. The world confuses me and I don't know how to cope. But this show has helped me gently reframe some of my defeatist and self-destructive thought patterns. It has challenged me intellectually and philosophically in gentle, friendly, and often silly ways. And this final episode.....I sobbed for about 45 minutes straight. It addressed head-on some of the most pervasive aspects of my trauma, all centered around the "paradise" teachings of our cult. I did not expect this final episode to change the way I think about everything, but it did. I'm emotionally drained and so grateful.
Thank you.
Doctor Who: It Takes You Away (2018)
Nearly there...
Finally an episode that actually feels like doctor who. They even tied-in a little from a previous episode. They were nearly there on this one...but if they were serious dr who writers they wouldn't have made this another monster-of-the-week; they would have foreshadowed it the whole season and made this an epic two-episode special. Still though, I'm glad to have an episode like this this season.
Doctor Who: Arachnids in the UK (2018)
Not a fan of this episode
This is one monster-of-the-week that could have been left to the local animal control. The Doctor didn't even need to be there for this one. Also, I found myself agreeing with the antagonist more than I did with the doctor. For example, a quick death is much more humane than letting a spider suffocate.
Young People Ask: How Can I Make Real Friends? (1999)
Endoctrination Propaganda
The goal of this film is to convince Jehovah's Witness children/teens that it's dangerous to be friends with anyone outside of their religion. This film deeply influenced me as a young person, and it caused me to cut off true long-lasting friendships just because they weren't Jehovah's Witnesses. It has taken me decades to try to rewire my brain to convince myself that non-JWs aren't bad people.
