We Go On (2016)
A few flaws, but solid horror
I enjoyed this. The idea wasn't terrifically new or groundbreaking, but I felt the writers gave some depth to the storyline and the actors were down to pull it off. The jump scares irritated me because I felt it cheapened the film...you don't have to make a loud, obnoxious noises to let you know something is scary, because the characters drove and sold the story. They should have stuck with the dramatic, "slow burn" aspect because they had the talent. But overall, it was well acted, directed and scripted and it was a breath of fresh air for this horror fan. I think some reviewers were a little harsh on this. It had a few flaws but was worth seeing IMO if you adore horror.
Dark Places, Deadly Illusions (2021)
Why did these actors do this project?
This is a miserable failure. The only two reasons I think Dulmot Mulroney. Kristin Davis and Shanola Hampton would have ever done this is either they loved the idea of duality in horror (who doesn't?) or they made some pact with the devil in exchange for their talents. The script was really bad. I knew right away it was not going to be a solid pick, since the pacing almost felt like a Lifetime holiday film on a bad acid trip. The three listed above did their best with what they were given, especially Mulroney, but man, the direction and those horrible lines! Not to mention the plot holes were crater-sized and many of the characters' actions were implausible to anyone with common sense...and I have quite an imagination and can still not see anything like this going down in any circumstances. What was with the bra shopping? "Oh, hi, I am your brand new boss, but I am going to take you bra shopping and GO IN THE DRESSING ROOM WITH YOU." Such a natural unfolding of events we have all experienced at sometime, amirite? Some other highlights include twin kids that look completely different ages, horrible acting by some secondary actors, a psychiatric disorder many doctors deny exist and a storyline that defies logic in any universe. I mean, where did the extra bike come from? If she "hadn't done this in a long time" (as in, riding a bike), why did she have a brand new adult bike just sitting around ready for them to go on a long, sensual ride to the lake (where they had a full spread with wine yet no character was seen going or coming back with any supplies)? It's little things like that, over and over again that just makes the viewer wish they had bowel problems so they could take a bathroom break to avoid another scene. Just don't watch it. It will make you depressed that actors like these are taking on projects like this. I was debating a 1, but gave it a 2 since you do get to see Mulroney's bare ass and that is never disagreeable as far as I am concerned. But someone's going to be up for a Razzie for this excrement and it will be well deserved. I wish Netflix refunded money for things they say are "#3 watched in the nation" but suck this bad. It's uncool to set viewers up like that.
From Dusk Till Dawn (1996)
A Classic
This is one of those films that if you turn on the TV and it's playing you just have to watch to the end. I mean, look who is in it. Robert Rodriguez knows camp and horror inside and out. A lot of people gave crap to Quentin Tarantino for his acting but I thought he played the perfect psychopath. What I loved the most was how all the vampires looked different in the most abhorrent ways. Special effects and makeup was A+++ but that is what happens when you get two titans like Tom Savini and Greg Nicotero together. I heard from a documentary that they had to make the vampire blood a blobby green in order to get an R rating instead of a NC-17 (NC-17 ratings were movie suicide at the time, save Showgirls, which we all know was another horror classic.) So much fun in one little movie. A classic.
Underwater (2020)
Underwhelmed
Boring. Did I miss something other viewers saw? I don't have narcolepsy so I know I wasn't asleep, although this movie did inspire the thought. Unoriginal concept, poorly acted and just overall...well, boring. I know I used the same descriptor twice but this movie used tropes out the ying yang and borrowed from other movies so badly, that I don't regret the repetition. Avoid. Please. Living life is too precious.
Slaxx (2020)
The killer Bollywood pants from hell
If you like campy, fun, nonsensical madness, this one is for you. I personally enjoyed it. I laughed at the current social stereotypes it reflected and it had a couple "almost" moments of horror. It was more comedy, but come on, you gotta know from the synopsis it is not The Exorcist. Laughable, fun and silly. I liked it.
The Haunting of Hill House (2018)
Horror Perfection
I really can't gush enough about this. After a couple practice runs in the same vein of psychological drama (Absentia, Oculus), Mike Flanagan accomplished the extraordinary with this series. Every episode is so beautifully crafted I once again had my faith in good horror/drama renewed. It is beautiful, well produced, well acted and written. It juxtaposes the haunting of the mind with actual haunting and dares the audience to question whether or not there is any meaningful difference between the two. I never give a horror film or series a 10, with the exception of Hereditary, but this was pure perfection. Every scene, every detail, is crafted so exquisitely that it should be required study for any film major anywhere. Wow. Gorgeous. Well done, Mike Flanagan. He's a superstar in my book. This series is so much deeper than what it appears. It could have gone astray so easily, yet he keeps the pacing and scares consistent. Please see it. You will not be sorry.
Knock Knock (2015)
Why all the hate? Solid psych/drama
I think everyone that rated this movie poorly expected an Eli Roth film to be grotesque and gory. This is neither. Rather, it was a psychological thriller with a cringe-worthy outcome. The acting is superb...Keanu Reeves shines as do the supporting cast. Well directed and executed. It had my attention from beginning to end, and given my penchant for getting distracted with other things during a horror film, that is a compliment. But...this is NOT horror. I think that is why a lot of people hated it. Eli Roth's name is synonymous with the visually disturbing, so if that is what you are after, skip this one. I think this was his segue into something different, and he totally pulled it off. If you love psych drama this is for you. If you after jump scares and gore, skip it. I went in without expectations and enjoyed it.
Midsommar (2019)
Ari Aster does it again!
I love this guy. Hereditary was a 10 in my book, and now this. He really knows how to develop truly complex and fascinating characters and then put them face to face with bizarre and grotesque circumstances. If you have not seen Hereditary, stop reading this and put it on immediately, unless you are alone. Midsommar was a romp in the sun...the effed up, cultish macabre sun. Do not expect horror tropes here...no jump scares, no gratuitous gore (although there is plenty, but necessary for the storyline.) It is like the first (and only, IMHO) Wicker Man, with the nude people and gruesome acts. Everything you want in a horror film and much more, as it asks questions of the viewer that may be difficult to answer. Highly, highly recommend and I have seen them all.
The VVitch: A New-England Folktale (2015)
Not for horror fans, for arthouse indie peeps
Excellent. Very slowly yet effectively conveys sexual politics or "the witch" era. Acting is excellent, direction as well. Really only for psycho drama fans, not horror. I loved it. Bonus points for Black Phillip, he is a true national treasure and should have received an Oscar for Best Supporting Goat in a Dramatic Role.
Hereditary (2018)
Few horror movies scare me, but this...
Die hard horror fan here. I am grizzled and jaded and usually laugh at gore schticks, be it slicing someone in half or doing whatever they do in the Saw films. I have never rated a horror film at a "10" but this deserves it. Wow, just wow. It deeply disturbed me in the best way possible.. I was so blown away. Toni Collette...well, she is the greatness that is Toni Collette and the direction IMHO is flawless. I would never see this alone and that I a whopping bulk of OMG, considering the movies I watch. Man, it is effed up and I mean that with greatest admiration and awe. Watch it with someone else, with the lights out. You will not be disappointed.
The Wretched (2019)
Not horrible, not great
A 4.5 in my opinion. Concept is good, acting sorta good and special effects...just no. If you are easily scared, go for it. If you are a grizzled horror fan like me, put it on while you are doing something else and take in the one or two good parts and the basic storyline for better nightmares. I personally almost fell asleep but decent. Not for die hard horror fans.
The Neon Demon (2016)
Conceptual, maybe a tad snobbish
I would give this 5.5 if I could. I can see where the director wanted to go, but he just didn't get there. The performances were wooden, but I think that is what the director wanted. The cinematography was stunning...it was a visual treat for the eyes, like a moving art masterpiece. But in the end, it neither added up to anything you could sink your teeth into, nor elicited any empathy within the viewer. A miss, but worth seeing if you are bored.
Enemy (2013)
For indie/arthouse film lovers only
This is a slow burner with a strange ending. Let me just say,, I have never rated a movie a 10 on IMDB, so a 9 is a great compliment.. It is really for people that miss the days of 90's arthouse films. The ending is awesome and comes full circle. IMO, this director is genius. So. Well. Done. It had me thinking for a couple days afterwards, which for me is the hallmark of a solid film. LOVED it. I don't get excited about movies often, but this one browned my biscuits in just the right way. Only for those who love psychological/metaphorical indie movies. If you do, check it out and you will not be disappointed. This is why I love movies. Acting: superb. Direction: flawless. Script: solid and then some. Great and memorable film.
Moon (2009)
Must see, IMO
Ok, let's get it out of the way...David Bowie's son directed. I usually roll my eyes at progeny of famous people, but people, this is GOOD. Slow burner, but excellent acting, great direction and awesome script. I loved it and I have seen almost all sci-fi/drama/horror films there are. I would give it 8.5 if I could. Give it a shot.
After Midnight (2019)
Pretty OK, if you have 1 and 1/2 hours
It's more of a drama, but great creature. I would like to give it 5.5. Creature's concept is good but bad execution. Excellent acting. It would have been a better short, honestly.
Nailbiter (2013)
Hell is this movie on loop
First time reviewer, but this was a tragedy that called itself a movie, and more than enough inspiration for me to sign in and write. Name a component of film-making and this atrocity cussed it out and b*tch- slapped it in the face.
I adore horror. Even the most avid horror fan would be shocked at the dogs I have sat through and thought were OK. Don't get me wrong; there are other movies I would rate a "1" and feel was on par with this one, but something about this particular piece of crap just insulted me. Maybe it was the acting, particularly Erin McGrone's. She made me want to punch someone in then face and cry. There's something desperately wrong when the kids' acting is far superior to the adults'. Then there was the script writing, which was probably done by two drunk orangutans.
I guess the part that pushed me over the cliff was that the concept was actually a GOOD IDEA. I wish Eli Roth had somehow been involved in the production, due to the mix of natural disaster and horror (a la Aftershock.) I hate to see ideas with potential go to sore waste. If it's this bad, it should be a standard one-aspect movie.
A waste of precious time on earth.
