A pleasant surprise.
13 April 2024
Surprisingly, second part ended up in my opinion significantly more interesting than the first one. I guess when you try to adapt such rich lore to a movie screen , you just need more time for the things to develop properly. I didn't know why I should care about House of Atreides in the first movie , there was lack of emotional connection to the characters , but by the middle of the second movie I found myself fully invested in this underdog story.

Dune 2 is stylish, action packed , well acted and absolutely deserves the praise that it gets. I might have to read the books now.

Just as a final note, I think that, with all due respect , Christopher Walken was out of place here. With a budget like that they could have found a more imposing figure. And I am disappointed that Florence Pugh got so few lines. She's great, but this role could have been realized by almost anyone. Honorable mention to Austin Butler who was amazing.

GO WATCH THIS ON THE BIG SCREEN.

Gets worse episode by episode.
14 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
These type of shows always puzzle me. It's too violent for children, so they can't be the target audience ,but it's too stupid for adults. Begs the question who is watching this and who is enjoying it?

I will say that this show started really well. The first two episodes , maybe not perfect , had way more positives than negatives. Sadly, the longer I watched , more and more things made less and less sense.

First thing. Am I seriously supposed to believe that not even two decades after the civil war, our only black character never experiences explicit racism? 3 main characters who fought in the civil war and not even once they talk about the politics of it? Its weird. It's unrealistic. It doesn't make sense.

The romance between Elsa and Ennis. It quickly becomes obvious that Ennis is just a stepping stone in Elsa's empowerment journey and as soon as they get a chance, the writers ditch him like he never mattered. It was poorly written and rushed. Elsa kills Ennis' killer in a burst of rage and then forgets her first love as soon as the next guy shows up. It doesn't make sense. People don't grieve like that.

I don't know how people behaved in 19th century, but I have this feeling that Elsa's parents are more like someone you would see in the late 20th century. The main plotline of 1883 is the journey from Texas to Oregon. Margaret and James are more than aware of lurking dangers and unpredictability of it all but they seem to not care that their daughter is risking pregnancy ahead of a 2000 mile journey. The central theme of this show is basically "Wild girls will be wild girls and there ain't a thing you can do about it". Parenting is overrated apparently.

Every main character is protected by plot armor made from the thickest steel. No matter what happens they will survive. No matter how many "cattle thieves" or bandits they are going to encounter , they will prevail. Even when Elsa gets struck by an arrow AND faceplants falling from a horse, she turns into Chuck Norris and stays alive for whatever time the plot requires. Josef had maybe 4 lines since the 5th episode and then they suddenly give him half an hour of screen time in the last episode. Bcuz why not? Gotta stretch up the show somehow...

Elsa was simply not interesting enough to be the main character and at times it seemed like the writers are trying to maker her annoying on purpose. Just for the sake of it. "I just got shot by an arrow and I'm dying but let me turn my sass to the max before I fall off the horse instead of just asking for help"

I could go on and on and on. This show is silly, it's lazy, it's insulting , it's ahistorical. The only redeeming quality was cinematography. And wow America is sure beautiful.

Save your time and skip this horrendous show. 8.8 rating. Mad world.

Silo (2023– )

What am I watching?
10 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Pretty much everything here except maybe CGI screams mediocrity. The classist/elitist dystopian environment that we saw now in countless movies and tv shows , extremely average acting and a story that moves in a pace of a turtle. Tell me what happens in the second episode that is supposed to intrigue me enough to keep watching? Tell me something interesting about the silo, or the rebellion or how the world they live in came to be. Nah, just spend the entire episode on the alleged murder that nobody cares about. The characters are one dimensional and unlikeable. The dialogue is wooden. I yawned through the first two episodes trying my best to keep awake.

I'm not ready to give up, although I probably should. So far not something I would recommend. Onto episode 3.

Edit:

The third episode is no different. Most of it is spent on pointless dialogue and fixing the engine. I can't lie, the engine scene was a good bit of fun. I'm too dumb to even pretend to be a mechanical engineer but I assume that anyone with an actual degree would watch it as a comedy. 140 years this engine was going without any major repairs? Give me a break... Oh , and the camera constantly panning to the tattooed guy in charge of the mechanic squad was very amusing. Surely not at all what was intended but I take what I can.

Pass.

It's okay...

Warning: Spoilers
You can take Jeremy Renner out of Avengers but you can't take Avengers out of Jeremy Renner. His character is the strong silent type, he knows everything and speaks in cliches , he can track any man down and is seemingly more suited to investigate crime than the local police or FBI. Why are they even in the movie? This case is peanuts for the great hunter Cory Lambert. Let him to his thing.

Elizabeth Olsen could be replaced by pretty much any female actor and the result would be same or even better. Do we have a shortage of talented women better suited for these kinds of roles? I don't know.

The results of the investigation were disappointing. We find out that the girl was killed by some low IQ contractors who were so bad at doing crime that they just couldn't be bothered to cover anything up and couldn't keep their act together for two minutes after being approached by the police so they decided to just kill everyone so Cory could rush in at the last moment and be the hero that we need and deserve.

Don't get me wrong , I'm not against this cheesy vigilante hero stuff, but it left me wanting more. It's very mediocre movie in basically all aspects.

A beautiful and elegant prelude... To a porno.
28 October 2023
I will start by saying that there are things to love about this film. For one, the cinematography was spectacular. Long , painting like shots of Italian countryside in summer were absolute mesmerizing. Call me by my name has a lot of style, elegance and beauty ,just for that alone I have to refrain from rating this film less than 4/10.

I saw some people call this one of the greatest love stories ever. Which ridiculous to say the least.

Call me by your name was so over sexualized and at times porn like that calling it a love story is an insult to love stories. This film is devoid of romance. It's 2 hours of half naked hot guys trying their absolute best not to have sex with each other. Try comparing this film to actual love stories like Casablanca, pride and prejudice, eternal sunshine of the spotless mind. It's insulting to even think about.

There is one particular scene involving a fruit that was so over the top cringe that watching it should qualify as torture.

If you want a film about a teenager dealing with life's crossroads try Sorrentinos Hand of God. It has erotic elements but nowhere near as this vapid , self indulgent lustmance.

Hell or High Water (II) (2016)

Surprisingly fun watch
1 September 2023
A film about two degenerate brothers criminals and two cops and their inevitable encounter. Well acted, surprisingly funny and light hearted for a crime movie. It won't stay with you for long but if you have a couple of hours to pass , don't hesitate and watch hell or high water.

Jeff Bridges as Marcus Hamilton ,a quick witted and stubborn but likeable cop nearing retirement. And his partner Gil Birmingham as Alberto Parker, a stoic native american cop seemingly tired of Marcus' abrasive character makes for a really fun duo.

Ben Foster and Chris Pine did a good job of portraying two absolute dregs of society who get a reality check after a bank robbery gone wrong.

7/10.

Just watchable.
14 May 2023
Perhaps my naivete played a part but after seeing the 7.9 IMDB score I had high expectations. It also Clint Eastwood after all.

But I am dissapointed. Overall this film is just okay. It takes so much time to establish the story. I kept waiting for something to hook me in, for some sort of pay off, but everything was so predictable , it never happened.

Acting felt uneven. Some scenes make you care, some scenes seem unnatural , forced. The biggest plot twist wasn't really a plot twist since you could see it mile ahead. None of the character were likeable. When it comes crime genre Mystic river did not impress me and didn't offer anything new.

Moral abomination
8 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
My main gripe with this film is not so much the technical aspect(s) of it, but morally incomprehensible behaviour by some of the characters.

Torture scenes are never pleasant to watch but the ones carried out by Keller were especially disgusting considering the fact that the tortured person was mentally disabled. If it was only Keller involved in this moral abomination I would maybe be more forgiving, but Franklin and his wife were in on it as well which takes it to another level. It's over the top. It's also unrealistic. All it does is makes the viewer hate Keller , hate those involved. And what point does it make? Nothing that couldn't have been pointed out without the excessive violence. It just took away from the investigation which was the only interesting part about this story.

Maybe I will give this film a shot some years later. As of now it's not something I would recommend watching.

Stranger Things (2016–2025)

Should have ended after season 1
3 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Text: How many of these 9/10 10/10 reviews are written after the first season ? Too many.

I think very few people would argue that the first season is anything less than quality TV. Drama, mystique, elements of horrors. Good acting. It really was a near perfect season. Will gets found, the monster is killed , Eleven sacrifices herself. Sort of happy ending.

But no..who kills their cash cow so early?

Yeah, except the second season doesnt introduce anything new or interesting. Its a rehash of the first season but without the same mystique , excitement and suspense. And without the most important character. Eleven.

Again..who's idea was that? Keeping the most important character on the sidelines? The "bad men" are dead, "papa" is dead. Surely there was another way to coherently develop Eleven as a character without holding her hostage in Hoopers house.

As the things are reaching boiling point in Hawkins town, the directors realize they have to introduce Eleven back to the story SOMEHOW. So they give her a sideline quest (an entire filler episode) of going to Chicago to find her super natural sister. A subplot so cringe and pointless it left me in awe. It couldnt have been more mistimed too. It's one of the laziest come back setups I have ever seen.

Stranger things turned out to be a one season wonder that slowly evolved in to a self parody. I can only imagine what circus the 3 season is. I'm saving myself from that disappointment.

The Crown: Annus Horribilis (2022)
Season 5, Episode 4
10/10
Started slowly, picked up the pace and ended with lots to think about.
21 April 2023
Annus Horriblis felt so different after Mou Mou.

This episode was imperfect like everything else. The queen , "the system" , marriage... Life. Watching Margaret read the letters made my heart ache. It's bitter sweet. You think about what could have been. How many unlived lives there are? One decision will put you on a path and you will have to travel that path no matter how long or dark or dangerous or uncertain it is. It might not even be your decision and when you finally reach a certain point when you can turn to a new path, you realize it's been years ,maybe decades, maybe an entire lifetime spent walking that path. And now what? How does one make peace with the fact that your life could have been so much different, so much better? These are the questions all of us will have to face eventually.

Air (I) (2023)

As interesting as a movie about shoes will ever get.
17 April 2023
You might ask how interesting can a movie about shoes get? If you are bored out of your mind and have nothing else to do, maybe on an airplane or a long train ride, in this scenario the movie will be a good watch. Otherwise, it's toeing the line on being just barely watchable.

The problem with Air is exactly what you would expect, the concept. It's about shoes. You can take the best actors and the best cinematography the best everything and in the end...it's still a movie about shoes.

My biggest take away is thank God for Jordans mother. She had the smarts to demand what she thought Michael was worth. So many athletes and artists get sucked dry off their talent, making some people Uber rich while getting pennies in comparison.

What could have been.
26 June 2022
When I started watching this show I was highly skeptical. Up until the middle of the first season I was unsure whether I want to continue.

Things I did like: brilliant use of music for one. Tiffany, Styx ,Heart, Morcheeba, Mercury to name a few. People who assembled the soundtrack have great taste and deep musical knowledge.

Great characters. I LOVED the villains. Cha Cha and Hazel in my opinion held the first season together. When things got painfully boring, they came in to save the day.

Despite poor acting from some of the lead actors, lack of chemistry and dumb drama I stuck with it and to my surprise , by the middle of the second season I was enjoying this show. Well... That is untill the last couple of episodes and ESPECIALLY the finale. Second season finale might be the worst episode of any show I have ever seen where producers seemingly wanted to recreate avengers end game final battle or at least some epic super hero show down that falls flat on it's face in a spectacular fashion. I feel like we tend to cut A LOT of slack for sci-fi movies/shows when it comes to plot holes and logical inconsistencies because the premise itself is fantasy world but the finale was just an insult to ones intelligence. It's like they had a contest on who can throw the absolute worst ideas and then they just put them all in the finale. Admittedly it made me mad and thus I decided not to watch the third season.

Soapy and fake.
26 June 2022
I like Viola too much to give this a 1 or a 2. Other than that, I didn't find this show interesting. The characters are aggressively snobby, pain to be around, constantly trying to demean and one up each other. Seemingly everyone is pursuing their own machiavellian goals at any cost. The drama feels fake, manufactured in a forced and unconvincing way.

Hollywood at it's best.
21 June 2022
You don't have to be a car enthusiast to like this film. In fact, you don't have to know anything about cars or racing for that matter. Ford v Ferrari is so much more than cars. It encapsulates american can-do spirit. "We do these things not because they are easy, but because they are hard" famous words of Kennedy puts this film into perspective.

The racing scenes are stunning . I remember having cold sweats, holding on to my seat waiting for what's coming next.

But the characters is where this movie REALLY shines. Bale Damon duo is made in heaven and their chemistry is off the charts. They compliment each other and elevate this film to the next level. Tracy Letts is superb as Henry Ford the second, delivering arguably the most memorable scene of the entire film.

In my eyes Ford V Ferrari is nearly perfect and definitely one of the best movies of the past decade.

Alias Grace (2017)

Pains me to give this a 6.
5 May 2022
Very well written and brilliantly acted. Sarah Gadon is amazing. The story was told in an interesting way, and Grace's journey made me uncomfortable and tense quite often. That is until the last couple of episodes. All tension went away, things all of sudden appear rushed/forced, especially the last episode.

Could have been a 10/10. Worth watching though.

Don't quite remember when was the last time I had so much fun in the cinema
29 April 2022
The gentleman moves efortlessly from funny to intense to oh my god what is going to happen next to wow I did not expect that. Guy knows how to manipulate emotions of the audience and this is by far one of the most entertaining pieces of cinema in recent memory. It was also the last movie I have seen on the big screen before the pandemic hit, so sentimental value is strong as well.

Must watch.

Not bad, just mediocre.
20 April 2022
I usually enjoy slow burns but this was not it. Waiting, talking, more waiting, the end. Dialogue wasn't engaging so you just had to hold on to the more interesting scenes which were few and far between. Solid acting but not much more. A real snoozer.

Story telling at it's best. Shocking, depressing, moving.
10 October 2021
The fact that this movie has made just over 6 million in the box office is an absolute travesty.

Rating Proffesor and the Madman a 7.3 is offensive to the art of movie making and anyone involved in it.

Painful to watch.
2 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Probably 2 hours of the film were dedicated to explosions, shootings and car chases. This might as well be John Wick meshed with Fast and Furious, not James Bond.

Hand watches that shut down electricity of entire buildings, machine guns installed in the front lights of a sports car, biological weapons that target specific people on the basis of their DNA? Y'all sure this is not a sci-fi genre?

The most exciting part of this movie was when it ended. Avoid.

Soulless.
18 September 2021
Soulless but visually pleasing eye candy. The same problem as with any other modern blockbuster. Lack of emotional connection with the characters. Reminds me a lot of Tenet in that sense.

The most excitement I felt while watching Dune is when I realized Momoa shaved his beard.

Underrated. Dont listen to the haters. A story to learn from.
3 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Yes the plot is simple and some people say it had many scenes that added nothing to the experience and I disagree. I think the movie achieved what it wanted perfectly.

First of all. Live within your means. People in the west and increasingly all around the world live in a fairytale. They want the latest iphone, a brand new gucci bag and high maintenance car just because it's out there, just because they think it will add value/meaning to their life and give them the opportunity to post something on Instagram. If you cant afford it- dont buy it. Learn to say NO.Either make more money or be content with what you have. Invest in your skills/hobbies instead of a fancy lifestyle you cant afford.

Are you honest and real with the person that you truly are? Who are you trying to impress, yourself or others? Look at Warren Buffet. He's a billionaire and lives in a modest home, drives his rusty car ,and gets breakfast at McDonalds. If you walked past him you would probably never tell that he is one of the richest men in the world. Thats because his biggest asset is his mind and not his bank account. Find something you are passionate about and stop trying to impress others.

And finally family is number one. Your kids dont need to attend the most expensive school and live in the biggest house possible. They need love and attention. They need something to look up to. Yes a man is a provider , but as long as your kids have a roof over their heads and food on the table its gonna be fine. If they get less they get less, people who accomplish biggest feats usually come from poor background because they learn very early what it means to struggle. You get out of life what you put in. Its far more important to have a father in the house than live without financial struggle.

The acting was great and i really loved the way filmmakers used Richmond in this movie. There is a heart breaking scene when Allison comes back home after drinking. She desperately wanted to get her life back(horse). Life in New York wasnt perfect, it wasnt without struggle but at least the family was happy.

My english is not the best but this movie is very well worth watching. Dont listen to the haters.

Prepare to get dirty. Brilliant movie
22 January 2019
Let me start by saying that I have never heard of Yorgos Lanthimos before this movie thus I was prepared for anything. Also i am not a fan of drama and female dominant movies but i have to say, this movie was perfectly made roller coaster of evil intentions and brilliant acting. Im still in awe of how many negative reviews this movie is getting. Sound track was a huge addition to the overall feeling and sinister vibe of the movie as well as the ending. What an ending. Literally summed up two hours of the movie in one short scene with a perfect accuracy. I also feel that this movie was a bit of a trap to the marvel universe/deadpool fandom since so many people expected another cheesy and dumb comedy.
