The Seagull (1977)
4/10
not brilliant
25 March 2016
This movie is a faithfully adaptation of the seagull of Cechov, direct by a very good director and played by fine actors. The only problem, for me, is that no one suited the character and no one really played it in an appropriate manner. perhaps since they were actually famous, the just play the drama in a way to show how skilled, intense and sexy actors they are and scarcely bored in rendering the spirit of the work of Cechov. If you are interesting to saw an Italian version of a play from A.Cechov better to stick with a more classic versions,I would suggest the Seagull directed by Orazio Costa or the classic The Cherry Orchard by Giorgio Strehler, both available on the tube.

At least more faithfully then the harder they fall
24 May 2015
This movie is hardly a must see and is inevitable the comparison with the harder they fall...keeping as pivot point the story of Primo Carnera there was some pro e some cons:

Pro much more faithfully with the story of Carnera, a good talent that failed to establish himself among the greatest ( thinks mma career of Brock Lesnar) with some shadows in his early career. The movie with Bogart is a totally defamation and is amazing how people take it seriously . The names of the characters are right .

Cons

Not so faithfully..the movie is full of errors and mistakes. The actor puts an effort playing Carnera but he has just the height..as a boxer the style is totally different ( Carnera uses his fine jabs and his right uppercut, this one only direct punches). Antonio Cupo plays a dwarf Baer that is over a full foot shorter then Carnera and half his size ( Baer was a few inches shorter, a giant of his own) with a brutish face, Cupo was choice because is an handsome male model. in others hands Baer cheated during that match and Primo dislocated his ankle at the beginning of the match and the movie portrayed those details.

Judging it as a pure movie it does not lace the boots of Harder they fall.

Godzilla (2014)

A spot for the military, no much more
8 June 2014
This movie is a spot about the American military no much more. The supposed main character Godzilla made a brief cameo fighting a pair of insect-alien like monsters at the end of the movie but is not enough to save "Godzilla" for being a blockbuster that delivers something different from a big budget Godzilla movie. The main character is a obvious superhero marine called Brody ( a citation from jaws) that is handsome and brave just like every others marines and he has not even a sidekick, except for a Japanese children that he saves, like spider-man. And the other thing..those giant monsters are weightless, they come closer like ninjas, they don't shake the ground even if they weight thousands of tonnes, they don't smell, and appears in front of you like magic.

Pacific Rim is not flawless but it is years light better then this. A big disappointment, a waste of money .

Tiger Mask II (1981–1982)
6/10
Tiger Mask + Batman against the honorable ( and evil ) sheik
27 December 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Tiger Mask 2 is a sequel for Tiger Mask but really pale and sucks in comparison to the original series. First of all : the storyline is rather dull if compared to the first one: the original Tiger Mask die saving a children and his place was taken by one of the orphan ( not Kenta)that learn all the martial arts and become better then the first one, okay..the guy has a secret identity: is a clumsy reporter ( like superman), has a transformable (tiger themed) car ( like batman), has an living armored tiger (!) like he-man and, instead of a bat-cave he lives in a ancient pyramid hidden below the mount Fujii. The foes of this Batman-Tiger Mask are an gangster organization lead by an evil sheik . The evil sheik is very wealthy, he live in a luxury boat and has an professional wrestling team of his own that use to humiliate the always good Japanese wrestling association. (wrestling is real here) AND blackmail Japan menacing that he could block the oil furniture..the evil sheik is the most powerful fighter in the world : in 30 second he beat Andre the Giant..the sheik is bad but in the end he die and become good, Tiger Mask kills him after a furious match but nobody arrest him for homicide or stops the match. Absurdity don't stops here: the evil masked wrestlers used often absurd moves and gimmicks: one is a former American astronaut and..can fly, another is a giant with blue skin but is not Dragonball, the anime pretend to be realistic .

second: the drawing: the element of fascination of the first Tiger Mask were the sketchy drawing, an artistic touch that was very impressive . Tiger Mask 2 has flat and uniform drawing, the opera of a competent team but without any originality. The background music is inferior too.

Real life wrestlers as guest star are present too: they went regularly trashed (Andre the giant included) by the evil masked wrestlers .

I saw all the episode when I was 10 and was disappointed from the third one .

Battle royal!
2 November 2013
This is a post-script to the sword and sandal era with the characters ( the strong hero, the evil but beautiful queen, the gods) rendered in a brilliant farcical way. a brief summary: all the supermen collide, fight each others for futile reason and become friends ..then fight each other again because punching each other is fun. In order of appearance : Hercules: the cocky and might son of Zeus who is lusted by the queen ( but he want to married the daughter.) and challenged Samson for proving he is the strongest ever. Samson, the favorite of Jehwa and the strongest man in the world ( being Hercules not a man but a demigod)..his wife cuts of his hair so the poor Samson lost his powers and go bullied by both Hercules and.. Ursus the gladiator: a giant of man, a violent bully with an enormous strength, upon him slight prevails Maciste: the second strongest man in the world..an hero that lives only for defends the people from the force of evil. The movie is a comedy and a well done one. The acting is good ( the supermen characters are bit silly, all of them and the actors portrait they macho attitude very well)the direction and the script works. I wonder why the hell it gets a so low review.

Amusing comedy
22 September 2013
"Bionda Fragola" is a movie based on the namesake theatrical piece, both by Mino Bellei. Two early middle aged gay lovers, Domenico (Mino Bellei) and Antonio (Umberto Orsini) lived together in an quiet menage until the little younger or the couple fallen in love for a young and naive actor . Feeling cheated and betrayed, Domenico starts a hell of mess until the weak Antonio, that has not the guts to dump him solve the question with an explosive "menage at trois". Other characters are the senile parents of Domenico and his transvestite brothers that care of them. The comedy is never vulgar, has a good pace and is played by good actors.

A worthy conclusion for an amusing TV show
18 September 2013
Boris is a comedic serial about the staging of a soap opera, the fictional Heart's eye, with a political and social satire. The main character is played by Pannofino, the actor voice of several American star, underrated but very effective as ironic actor.

After 3 seasons they made this movie that add a final episode to the saga. If you are a fan of the series you will enjoy this even if there is not real innovation since the characters done the same performance and mannerism but, since the writing is good as usual, is not really a flaw. If you are not a fan or not know the series Boris the movie is hardly fun : you'll miss all the citation and the quotes. The very finale is not that good, too farcical for be believable.

It worth a view.

Anni 90 (1992)

Bad movie don't bother
16 September 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Italian cinema has popped out a lot of B-grade comedy movies during his long history : movies with comedians that just plain silly, movies with fart jokes and childish humor, with a beautiful actress that take a shower and an weird guy that spy her with a lust eye. Some of those movies are surprisingly good and genuinely funny even with a poor budget, others have weak points but at least the actress was always beautiful to watch and the silly, peasant comedians have their moments. Since even a movie star has to pay his bills several A grade stars did those movies alongside with rising actors that would become very famous later. Anni 90 is a a comedy movie composed by several episodes with no ties to each others; famous comedian actors and TV typecast where involved..the result was very bad...not the kind of "bad movie" that was ultimately funny, this one was bad in a hostile way. The gags are so stupid and unfunny that seems to be wrote by someone with Asperger Syndrome, the plots of the episode seems to be wrote an hour before the stage on a napkin. The puns are so atrocious that one of the "comedian" say it then..explain the joke itself a moment later. The only almost decent episode, the final one, starts almost well..then something happened and..nothing more with the most illogical and stupidest final ever. A movie that failed as a comedy in a very unpleasant way, like a crazy hobo in the subway train that try, screaming loudly, to tale a joke then forget it and start to confabulate for find a final and never stops until the last stops of the train- I gave it 1 point, not zero for a reason: the movie never tire the audience because it is so irritating that the poor spectators are continually hurt and have no time for get bother. Like a gnome that punch or scratch you in the neck for the whole span of the movie. if you are Italian and can understand the jokes and the puns, please spare your time with something else, even Alvaro Vitali's Pierino is a masterpiece in comparison. If you are not Italian but you have some familiarity with our cinema, stay away to this monstrosity as leprosy. Sadly they made a sequel.

The end of trilogy
7 November 2012
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is the third and last movie of the trilogy of the freaks by Ciprì and Maresco , the first one is "the uncle from Brookling " and the second one is "Totò that lives twice". I wrote the freaks trilogy because their actors, including the main characters are non professional ones but instead people taken from the streets like Pasolini actually did but unlike him Ciprì and Maresco the "actors" uses only "freakish" people ugly, obese, aged, with health ( or mental)problems, speech impairments or disfiguring scars. Those freaks are the trademark of the director duo and are used in TV for a series of surreal sketches called "cinico TV". About the movie plot: in a cesspool Sicily, after the second War, the Lamarca brothers very want to be filmmakers, because they love cinema . so they sold their factory of stone statues and, with the help of a heinous cardinal, they start the "trinacria cinema studios" like their real life counterparts ( the directors of the movie Ciprì and Maresco)..they hired freakish people for playing in absurd and failed movies. In a desperate attempt to save their studios the Bros accept to make a movie about the wizard Cagliostro hiring the declining American movie star Errol Douglas (played by a very good Roberd Englund). (spoiler) the American actor falls down from a window and remains crippled after that, the incident lead the end also for the Lamarca brothers and their director that are killed by the Mafia because..they are financed by Lucky Luciano and Errol Douglas was a friend of the gangster ( end spoiler)

Pros: If you are a fans of the duo Ciprì and Maresco then you will enjoy this one: the main characters ( the ones who are actually alive) are still here, the toothless Giordano and the spiting One, the aphasic Cirincione etc. Some gags ( the statue with a big dick) are rather amusing.

Const : the movie uses various styles like neither the directors have a clear idea about the final result: it is a fake documentary ( but only in the first half), a vulgar comedy, a drama or the surreal "cinic" TV sketch. The actors cannot really act, some of them really made their best but their performance are so modest that the result is embarrassing to watch. Some of them are deformed others look like patients from a mental institute , dialogs consist in ugly people that yelling profanities in a very heavy accent... funny for a while but those gags cannot hold a whole movie . The plot is very confuse as well: Errol Douglas ( Robert Englund) get a head trauma and end his days in a mental asylum because think to be Cagliostro in the half of the movie..and was killed an devoured by feral pigs in the end.

Summary:

the movie follow different directions and looks like they try to blend together different projects; is amusing in some segment and tiresome in others. A little inferior of the first two, lacking the unreal atmosphere and tried to be a comedy but failed in that because the poor acting and writing . I'll do 6 of 10 for the visible effort.

A very amusing comedy movie
16 October 2006
Carlo Verdone was a good imitator and comedy actor, here he rendered several characters with the late Mario Brega ( a former boxer and sword and sandal and western actor) as a side kick. I wonder if this movie was dubbed ( hope not) and how an American or an Asian can be amusing watching it.

Verdone 's characters are all build ed from real life people ( he rendered a wimp, a Guido, a Hippy , a priest and a boring man)and the different voices and the dialogs of those characters( if you are an Italian) were irresistible because they sound both real and grotesque at the same time. If available, see this movie in Italian with subtitles. Sadly, the now days Verdone lost his magic: his movies are still watchable and funny but without the naive strenght of the early ones.

Bomber (1982)
7/10
Not a masterpiece but very watchable
28 September 2006
This movie is a mix up between "Lo Chiamavano Bulldozer" and "Rocky" with an a little aged Bud Spencer with some sidekicks and the same bad guy of "Lo chiamavano.." and "Uno sceriffo extraterrestre". Switch an former football player character from "lo c "Bulldozer" with a former boxer one and a groups of street boys with a single young man and voilà, here is "Bomber". The plot is less than original ("lo chiamavano Bulldozer plus something for Rocky"), you know and the jokes are not so funny as the prior BS movies. The sidekick Jerry Calà is an useless add to the cast; he played the role of an buffonesque boxer manager , noisy but not really funny despite his grimaces . Jerry Cala was an actually famous comedian and because of this the producers put him in the movie.

In comparison of those two classic, "Bomber" lost several points but the whole movie is still amusing.

Don't see this movie
17 August 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This "Don Camillo e i giovani d'oggi" (Don Camillo and the young of today) is a pale, crappy imitation of the classic series. The spirit of the book ( the last one ,because Guareschi died) was all lost; the acting is wrong (no fun, the character looks angry ); Lionel Started played Peppone ( Peppone does means "big Joe") and he is less then inspired; Gastone Moschin played an harsh and despicable Don Camillo, who won a " boxing match" kicking Peppone 's son ( the hell's angel boss, Veleno ) in the nuts ( in the novel Don Camillo fights as usual : punching and bodyslammed his younger opponent) !!! Get it? In the novel Don Camillo is an aged but still strong and leal fighter while in the movie is a unpleasant and dirty cheater. His main rival\alley is Veleno (Venom) , Peppone 's son : a rude and muscolar hell's angel but still a good fellow : brave and leal. In the movie Veleno was portrait as a some ugly street thug.

This movie paired in ugliness with the infamous remake by Terence Hill but it is not a nice family movie, it appear more a darker , mean version of Don Camillo . My advice: buy only the original Fernandel -Gino Cervi movies: see them in English and later in Italian with subtitles and stay away from further versions.

Il mio West (1998)
1/10
one among the worst Italian movies ever.
11 August 2006
Leonardo Pieraccioni is a nice, handsome man who made some successful comedy (romantic)movies in Italy, targeting the 20-30 years middle class womans. No gross matters, no sex , no curse language , I would to say no humor and no fun but it is just my opinion.

This time he make an attemp with a spaghetti comedy western and failed miserably. The plot is absurd and amateurish, the actors (pretty goods) were wasted in a crappy plot with just some glimpses . Do you want to enjoy yourself a Italian comedy? Do you want to see a spaghetti western? Simple make another choice: From Sergio Leone to Ugo Tognazzi,Bud Spencer e Terence Hill . Speaking to Tuscany ' commedians ,I would suggest Alessadro Benvenuti (prior 2000)and the early Benigni.
