The Couple Next Door (2023)
Needless muscular posing.
It seems to me that the only people who have really enjoyed this series are the ones who have tuned in to see Sam Heughan taking his top off. And as that happens with all too tedious regularity, I'm sure they're more than catered for. As for the rest of us, all we're left with is a dreary drama which lacks focus and drifts all over the place. To me it just feels like a hastily written and poorly produced vehicle to enable Mr Heughan to show off his physique and have lots of sex.
The other actors all perform their parts well though and I'd like to give a special mention to Hugh Dennis, who is especially creepy.
The Gallows Pole (2023)
Very amateurish
It's a sign of how bad this is that after 20 minutes I was reading reviews to see if others shared the same opinion as me. And it turns out that they do. It seems that the director is in the habit of blooding new first time actors in his work. There's plenty on show here and the acting is as you would expect - pretty poor. Added to that there were too many 21st century stylings in the production to allow yourself to truly be transported to the 18th century. Not least the lead actor's eyebrows. Surely no one in 1760s Yorkshire had enough time on their hands to manicure their eyebrows. The dialogue is pretty poor too.
The Ghosts of Borley Rectory (2021)
Laughable
I'm guessing this movie was made on the cheap. The cast is littered with has beens and never will beens. There's some woeful acting and a very poor script. The main apparition actually becomes amusing after you've seen it more than once. There's next to no tension and what little there is is ruined by the inadequacies of the acting. Strangely, the best of the actors in this movie have been reserved for bit parts, with the main roles being played by a crop of talentless oafs who, I can only imagine, got very poor marks at acting school. The icing on this poo cake is a ridiculous decision to have the lead actors using their very limited skills to speak in RP English. It doesn't even begin to come off. Finally, Reece Putinas, What can I say? Like the dead stump of a giant oak tree, he gives what must be the most wooden perfomance I have ever seen.
Shazam! (2019)
A disappointment
Not bad, but overly long. Every time I thought it was about to end, it didn't. There were some funny moments, but many were not. It wanted to be a comedy, but veered far too often into being a standard superhero movie with the usual tediously endless fight sequences.
Populous (1989)
The first god game
Quite probably the very first god game, Populous had you controlling your people in their bid to survive and prosper. It was a game so addictive that back in 1989 I had to remove the disk from my Atari ST and crush it, in a bid to get my life back.
The Isle (2018)
Iffy
Do you remember watching any spooky made for BBC TV Christmas dramas in the 1980s. If you do you'll have a feel for what this movie is like. Clearly made on the cheap, only one or two actors in the cast have the talent to hold this together. The rest are there to make up the numbers and deliver their lines as best they can.
