Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)
CGI shines (mostly), the story doesn't
I went on a family cinema event for 64 Euro only for the tickets, and I don't feel that the movie was the money worth.
Ok, first the positiv.
The sound is stunning and a worthy experience. Unfortunately is it unusual to pay only for the sound on the cinema ticket counter.
The optic is almost perfect, but with some scenes which are looking really awful. Due to the fact that almost the whole movie is made with CGI is it necessary to make look really perfect. Unfortunately look some scenes like scenes direct out of the good old Wing Commander III. Yes, it its time it was a fabulous game, but it doesn't match the current standards. Those scenes break the movie magic, because you see and you feel that the thing is artificial.
Ok, let's go the weak story.
1. There is no plausibel reason why the humans don't use an kinetic strike from the orbit to eliminate all the Navi.
2. The story is almost the same one like in the first movie. Now are learning Sully child instead of him and they learn how to adapt.
3. The reason why the humans are back isn't clear, but they're three options.
3.1 The Humans are back to colonize Pandora as new homestead for humankind.
This option would explain why no nukes are used but it still doesn't solve the kinetic strike issue. Further more would this option prefer pandora without the Navi. So why don't extinct them?
3.2 The Humans are back for Unoptanium. This reason isn't mentioned in the movie but is still present. Still doesn't solve the kinetic strike option.
3.3 They're back to earn some live extending solution from whales. Ok, I think you guess it by yourself. It doesn't ....
4. The remaining humans were living for over the years in an hazardous environment. Where does the supplies coming from?
5. In the first movie, the scientist needed pilots to operate the helicopters, but now they can fly them self. I think piloting a helicopter must be very easy.
6. The colonel is back due to a backup of his mind. Those backup can be uploaded in an Avatar body or in an cloned one. So, why do they need those magic live extending solution when you can live forever in you clones?
7. Character development. In simple words. I don't care about the characters in the movie. One dies? Who cares?
Conclusion: Soulless eye candy.
The Last Duel (2021)
boring ...
The movie is told similar to the classic Kurosawa Movie "Rashomon".
You see the story from the point of view of every main character. Unfortunately is the plot so boring that I was never cached to one of the character.
I am not really sure how I should describe the movie. I watched it on disney+ and while watching I made a lot of different things on my PC. Sometimes I had to review some key scenes to keep up but most of the time I never had the feeling that I lost some important or interesting part of the story.
Conclusion: Boring. The most boring movie Ridley Scott made.
Dune (2021)
For Fans only
At first, I've to admit that I love this movie. With my knowledge of the whole story, I read the books multiple times, is it like a dream to enjoy this movie. I had so much fun that it's 9 star movie.
Stop, I wrote 9 star and gave only 6? What the fxxx happened here?
Simple I talked to people without my knowledge of the books and as I entered the cinema a second time, I really like this movie, I was there with a friend without any knowledge of the books. This second time I tried to watch the movie from the view of my friend. What should I say. To be honest I wouldn't understand anything.
While the David Lynch version tries to explain as lot as possible lack this version almost every explanation.
David Lynch let us hear the thoughts of the people or explained with an guild report what is going on. This version explains nothing.
Why is Hue a traitor and why is this so extraordinary?
What is a mendat?
What are the Sardaukar?
What is the Quisatz Haderach?
Who are those Bene Geserit?
Why is spitting on a table a gesture of respect?
Why don't they use those Laser (Lasguns) to shoot at their enemies?
Etc..
Conclusion: If you can answer all the questions above, and more, you know your stuff and can enjoy the movie. Otherwise I recommend to read the books and / or watch the 1984 David Lynch version first.
Tenet (2020)
Turns from boring to interesting, but to late.
What should I write about this movie? I think I've to watch this a second time to get it overall but could be this the idea of making a film?
As my wife and me starting watching this film it was incredible hard to stay by the movie for the first 90 min. It was hard to me, because I was curious about the ending. The movie lost my wife after approximately 45 min, she stands up and starts reading E-Mails on her laptop. So, how can I rate this movie still with a six?
1. You will understand only a little bit in the first half of the film and the physical construct which is used to explain the "time effects / travel" is hard to believe.
2. The explanation is nice made but comes to late.
3. The music and sound effects are incredible terrible and annoying.
4. The acting is average and neither bad or good but far away from outstanding (best actor in movie Kenneth Branagh)
5. The plot background idea: The future attacks us to annihilate us because we such environment asses" is literally bullshxx! Who came up with this nonsense? By this plot the future will commit suicide by kill their own past. Unbelievable.
6. How can you make a movie which you have to watch twice to understand you've to bare an incredible boring first half. I watched several time on my watch only to check if it's over soon.
So you read all my points and there is still the question why a six. There are two points which a levelling the movie back over and average 5.
1. Due to the end I definitively want to rewatch the movie to better unterstand the first half. And maybe I'm able to enjoy the first half.
2. The movie made me think about it over the night and this is a really rare impact.
So I will see the movie a second time. Alone. And if I still don't enjoy the first half, it will drop to 3 star movie.
Source Code (2011)
Boring, more boring
I love films like "Memento", "Inception" and so on but this movie was so boring that I started fast forwarding during watching on prime. So, yeah, you can give it a chance, but in my opinion the whole movie is predictable and boring and you can spent your time with lot of better movies.
Mulan (2020)
The end titles are the best of the movie
Oh my god, how boring is this movie.
I was really looking forward to see it. I never compared it to the anime and hoped to see good action movie with interesting characters, character development and cool martial arts scenes.
What did I get:
1. The main characters are boring and the development of Mulan herself didn't cached me, too. During the whole plot I couldn't sympathise with one of the main characters. The best and most interesting character was the witch. If they had made a movie about her it could be really good.
2. The fight scenes are looking fine but I never believed them or took away in the movie land. I know that none of them are realistic, but if I saw Ip Man I was fascinated but the fast pace and perfect movement of Donnie Yen but the Mulan actress couldn't bring me to this point. Furthermore, the scene with the Trebuchet was actual braking the last bit of immersion in little bit pieces. Yes, it's a devastating weapon but slow and not really accurate. In this movie this damn thing hitting its targets accurate and fast like a modern tank with a laser guidance system.
3. You, can recognize the green screen scenes. They looks artificial and so the remaining pieces of any kind of immersion are vaporized and vanishing in the fating nebular.
4. End titles. Wow, they are really looking good and raises more emotions than the whole rest of the movie.
Conclusion: I watched the movie to the end and I dind't skipped scenes. So we are going to a >=3 stars. I would set it 3.5 but I can't round it up to 4.
Man on Fire (2004)
good movie with terrible cut
This time I don't want to review the plot of the movie. If I would only check out the plot it goes 7 stars and could really be recommended. But to watch this movie is a terrible experience. A lot of fast flashing and unstable pictures made me, and my wife, feeling sick. After this film I had headache and during the watching I've to cover my eyes due to the flashing effects made me sick.
So, if you hate techno and or discos like me, I can't recommend the film.
Harô Wârudo (2019)
What a disapointment
The story had very strong beginning and the graphics was very fine, too. Unfortunately lost me the story at the half of film and dropped me.
What happens? A guy from the future appeared to help his former self to save his great love but the guy isn't from the future. He enters a kind of matrix and everybody there is just a recording. So, would the mission fail, reset...reload the backup and start again. And thats the problem, during the second half of the film I don't care about the characters because they were just recordings. Sure at the end is a turn over, but it couldn't compensate the former 40 minutes.
Conclusion: 3 stars, because I watched the entire film without skipping to get to the end.
John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum (2019)
What a disappointment ... it destroys the setup from the firs movie
I was really looking forward to see this movie but it was a full disappointment. The first one set up an underground society of criminals which exists undetected with our normal live. It works perfect, you have to pay in a special currency to get into the club and all actions are more or less beneath the radar.
In the second movie this setup was slightly destroyed by introducing more and more people involved in this special society but I could bear it.
This part instead, set up a image that almost everybody is a Killer or part of this society. There're shootouts and actions in the mid of a town and it seems that there are no police everywhere. You can run threw New York and kill and shot as you like and there is no reaction but it seams to be normal to the citizens there.
Conclusion: The series moved from a action revenge movie in an interesting and cool universe to simply run and shoot movie what let me think of computer game. Sure the action scenes are cool, but action is the only thing you can see and the immersion is destroyed completely.
