Danika (2005)
Doesn't make any sense until the end
The movie starts off strong then it takes you for a loop! You think it's going one direction but it ends in a completely different direction taking you on a jumbled up ride. The acting from the cast was great.
There were just too many transitions or flashbacks/premonitions happening that caused this movie to not make sense. You only really understand what's going on when it reaches the end. I would hardly call this movie horror. It feels more like psychological thriller. The movie just felt very choppy, jumpy and not cohesive that is until it gets to the end which causes it to be bit of an irritating watch. The direction could have been cleaner. The plot had great potential.
This one gives me mixed feelings.
Mr. Harrigan's Phone (2022)
Not what it appears to be
The plot and even the poster are very intriguing and refreshing and so I was very excited to watch this film. It started off pretty solid and did a great job introducing the characters and building the setting. I appreciate the time spent building the relationship between Craig and Mr. Harrigan. The character relationships all felt believable.
Where it goes wrong is at the start with the way the movie presents itself as a horror or even thriller because it's neither. I was pretty disappointed to find this out. I kept waiting for it to pick up. I understand that this is based on a novel but I'm not sure how much of it is based on the novel so I guess I can't be really upset with the writer.
The movie felt tame, very safe. It danced around the main focus (or at least what I thought was the main focus was supposed to be and which is why I watched it in the first place which was the dead and the cellphone. There were so many opportunities to explore this and it's so sad to see so many missed opportunities, too many missed opportunities. I felt that the movie had more to deal with a moral message as opposed to exploring the supernatural. Lately Blumhouse films have had more exciting plots than the movie themselves and I hope that they don't continue down this road.
There was no climax. Also, it became annoying at how haunting music was used in parts of the movie that should have been haunting or suspenseful. It just felt deceiving.
They/Them (2022)
Not Enough Suspense and Development. Falls Flat.
The plot was very interesting and had great, great potential. Unfortunately not much was done with the plot. The cast were all solid and could have been used in a much better way to showcase their acting abilities but their potential was swept under the rug by the very flat and limiting script. The horror with this film was very minimal. Too much time was spent on the intimate scenes and not enough time spent on the suspense, the escaping, the attempt at conversion etc... The intimate scenes bothered me a bit because I felt these LGBTQI characters were sexualized and thus lessened their impact.
I didn't really connect with any of the characters and the climax was very anticlimactic. I really enjoy Blumhouse productions but this film felt really underdeveloped almost lazy and I really hate to say that. I could think of countless ways to have made this film better. Maybe it wasn't laziness, I take that back maybe the writer had so many ideas on how to play out the film that they stifled their own creativity.
The Black Phone (2021)
It was kind of bland.
I love Blumhouse and so I was very excited to see this film. I'll just jump right in- I hate to say it but it was disappointing and surprisingly pretty anticlimactic. The movie was flat and I can't understand why. They cast was pretty solid. The production was good. They had a lot to work with but chose so little. There was such much potential to further develop the plot as well as the background of the antagonist.
Watching the film I didn't really feel any emotion. The movie didn't feel rushed but it felt really short. It was open and shut nothing to really discuss or ponder. Maybe the target audience is for young teens which is why I didn't really connect with it?
It's like the film lifted off but didn't ascend if that makes sense. I still love Blumhouse and I'm anticipating their next film.
Honeydew (2020)
I don't know why I finished it
It started off with lots of potential but then it just kept dragging on and on and on. Everything about this filn was slow. I had to skip ahead a few seconds because of how slow everything was. I wanted to scream out loud. "Get to the point already!" The point was gotten to but it was very anticlimactic.
There were confusing bits that made me scratch my head. It just didn't make any sense to me.
The setting was superb for what they were going for and the actors did a great job. The direction of the film however was poor in my opinion.
I kept watching for some big reveal, some type of climax but I never got it. I felt like I wasted my time.
Ratter (2015)
Stressful to Watch
The movie summary made this movie sound interesting unfortunately the film fell REALLY flat. The film basically follows "a day in the life of" perspective and it's very annoying. There's no true climax in the film. The times where there's a little bit of excitement it automatically falls flat because of the writer's/director's choice.
It's a pretty boring film honestly and that's disappointing. The ending was even more disappointing because you spend all of this time waiting for a build up only for NOTHING to happen. The ending should have actually happened in the middle of the film and from there it should have developed.
The actors were ok. They did the job that they were supposed to do. I will say the mom towards the end of the film provides some good, believable acting.
Also, there's no backstory on the antagonist either which if explored could have added a little color to the film.
It was a one dimensional film. No thrills. Monotonous.
The only positive from this movie is that it brings to light the potential dangers of technology. I don't mean to sound so negative but it's how I feel.
Reprisal (2018)
Movie is good to play in the background
This movie started off great but it played out in such a monotonous way despite all of the shooting going on. I was waiting for some kind of plot twist but it never happened. The movie was like a flat line, no ups or downs, very anti climatic. Even the climatic parts fell flat. There was also a lot of meaningless dialogue and scenes.
Bruce Willis was completely under utilized and was disappointing to see. He really didn't have anything to go off off because the script wasn't that great. He was just there and didn't add any value to the film. They could have just casted a lesser known actor in this film if they were not going to use Bruce.
The characters were underdeveloped and I didn't feel attachment to any of them. At some point I started wanting the bad guy to win just so there could be some excitement .
This movie is good just to have something playing in the background.
Army of the Dead (2021)
What kind of ending was that?
The characters are solid and well developed. The cinematography was superb. The special effects were nicely done. The plot was solid. The movie was action packed and more serious in comparison and cohesive to Army of Thieves. There wasnt really ever a dull moment. The movies oscar little over 2 hours long and the writer/director made sure to use every minute. I was really appreciative of that because I didn't want the movie to end.
***SPOILER ***
Despite all of that good the direction of the film REALLY disappointed me. Nothing was gained in the end. Great characters were taken out for what? There was no point. Why did the writer chose to let the least important and least interesting character live? For what? There was no happy ending and all of the characters went through all of that difficult work for no reason. It's laughable. Ridiculous. I dont see how Army of Thieves was a prequel. It did not transition into Army of the Dead. It's like they named Army of Thieves as a prequel as an after thought. Why would the writer choose to take out the one main character that we all fell in love with in the prequel? It makes no sense at all.
I guess the good thing about the ending is that it's set up perfectly for the next movie.
Army of Thieves (2021)
Mixed Bag But You'll Fall in Love With the Main Character
This movie is a mixed bag and I wonder why the writer decided to go this way. It bounces back and forth between serious to comedic to monotonous to action packed. On top of that you have a bank heist/apocalypse/love story. I don't really understand it. I was a bit disappointed at first because I like the true grit and seriousness of heist movies but the main character Sebastian just pulled me in and I couldn't stop watching. I just love how eccentric and random he is.
All actors played their roles very well and so this was cast well. The camera work was nice. The plot, while interesting was pretty solid and consistent throughout and the characters were all well developed. I kind of wished the writer stuck with one theme and one genre because it seems like they had so many ideas and instead of breaking them up in putting them into different films they threw everything into one. But then again if the writer went about it differently we wouldn't have Sebastian so I'm conflicted.
I'm getting ready to watch the next one Army of the Dead and I'll be back to rate that one.
Intrusion (2021)
Predictable.
So the cinematography was great. Nice camera work. The characters were fully developed. The one thing that I could not get over was the actions of the female main character (Meera). She made so many bad choices in the film that made me scratch my head in awe. Also, her character was very one dimensional and very spaced out. At times I thought wow I could have played this role. They could have given her more depth. Additionally the two main characters were just oddly cast. They didn't mesh well together.
Before the film was halfway through it was predictable. I predicted the plot 100% so that was kind of disappointing. Had Meera not made the decisions that she made the plot could have been more thrilling, more exciting.
Overall it was a decent film but had potential to be much, much better. The plot could have included more layers/depth to it.
Crawlspace (2016)
Great film! Not a dull moment.
What a great film! It was packed with suspense. I can't recall a dull moment in the film. The characters were well developed, the acting was great, the plot was tight and the camera work was top notch.
I've seen films with a similar plot but this one was very creative and can stand on its own.
I would recommend.
The Purge: Election Year (2016)
Kind of boring
I hate to say that this one is my least favorite so far. I was expecting it to be a continuation of The Purge Anarchy especially since they had one of the main characters back. The plot was actually cumimpacted. I found myself multi tasking while Watchung it. It had potential but the senator character and story was such a pain. The introduction of new characters was confusing too. It felt all over the place. No real cohesion. It feels like it was just thrown together.
There were some strong actors in Anarchy it would have been great to see them again especially Carmelo.
I don't understand the reason behind killing off one of the characters in the end. It didn't add any sentiment just annoyance. That character could have lived and it would have been impactful.
Calm Before (2021)
Disappointed
This movie was extremely disappointing.
Poor plot and character development
Poor direction
It tricked me into thinking it would be good. I ended up confused at what was going on. I was extremely annoyed by the main character. I felt like the movie was based on her not opening a folder. I just wanted to scream, "Open the damn folder!". I actually did scream that. When she opened it nothing was really explained that wasn't obvious. Furthermore the summary was pretty deceiving too.
The story has been done plenty of times. The way it was presented on screen was not very strong or cohesive. I think a script rewrite and a tweak in direction could have saved this film.
Dark Places, Deadly Illusions (2021)
Uncomfortable and Too Ambiguous
The romantic angle of this film is very unsettling. It was very difficult to see a woman and man old enough to be the character's parents making out with her. It was pretty sick in my opinion. Just the fact of two older characters sexualizing a young girl upset me. It's not too explicit but it's still uncomfortable to watch and I ended up fast forwarding past those parts.
The film dragged out for too long without anything significant happening. What was so disappointing about this film is the ambiguity. Ambiguity can be exciting but the way it was portrayed in this film made it very confusing so confusing that it was hard to keep up.
All of the actors were solid.
This film had potential but it was spoiled by the direction the writer took.
Coming 2 America (2021)
Good movie. Lots of laughs.
Overall it was decent. It had a solid plot and the characters were well developed. Casting was great. Wardrobe was beautiful.
Honestly, given that the first movie was such a classic I guess I was expecting a bit more. I don't understand why the idea of this one didn't go to the big screen. Im sure it would have done well. This sequel definitely doesn't have any elements of the original. It lacked a certain elegance and I felt that there were scenes in there that didnt need to be there (mainly a lot of the music scenes). The character that played Meeka was very strong and if the movie centered around her more maybe it would have given it that original feel.
At certain times it felt like a mockery of African culture and some character's accents were on and off like they'd have the Zamunda accent and then it would be an American accent and then back to the Zamundan accent and so that took away from the authenticity. I cringed a bit at Leslie's character but then grew to love her in the end. I especially loved Wesley Snipes' character.
Lastly there seemed to be a fusion of Black American and African culture which was nice to see.
Red Room (2019)
Disappointing. What's the point?
This will be a great movie for misogynistic psychopathic masochists. I have no idea why I watched it until the end because it was a complete waste. I guess I kept hoping that the ending would be meaningful but it wasn't. This movie in my opinion literally has no point. The director could have chosen any iiway to go but this way with the plot. I was very disappointed with this movie and ended up feeling uncomfortable after it was over.
I Care a Lot (2020)
I never hated a character so much!
I've never hated a character as much I did Marla Grayson. Ugh! Rosamund Pike did an excellent job in her role. The casting in this movie was great. The film did a great job in invoking the feelings that it wanted you to feel. I enjoyed the ending and was actually smiling in the end. I would have had Roman take a different direction with Marla but I was satisfied with the end result.
Good plot and tight execution. I would reccomend.
It was a good movie.
No Escape Room (2018)
Started Off Strong Ended Up Weak
This movie has some great suspense and some great creepy elements to it. It was weird because it started off really strong but ended very weak with unanswered questions which was very disappointing. Not enough time was given to the character development of the inventor. Not enough focus was given to the plot. It could have been great but definitely missed the mark on the storyline and main character.
Casting was weird because the father and daughter looked similar in age. You didn't get the father daughter feel. They looked more like an estranged couple. The characters all played their parts well but their introduction was very superficial so you didn't develop strong attachments to any of them.
Not a bad film it just could have been better.
A Quiet Place (2018)
Not a bad film. Could have been developed more.
It wasn't a bad movie. All of the characters did a great job in their role, especially Emily Blount. I just thought there were some senseless decisions made by some characters. I didn't like the way it ended, it honestly could have ended much better. The storyline could have been developed more, it was a bit too easy, too simple. I do appreciate how a story was able to be told with such little dialogue.
The movie was great at keeping the eerie and suspenseful tone. The soundtrack fit perfectly as well.
A Darker Reality (2008)
Good movie if you like torture.
A good movie if you like torture of women and hopelessness. Acting was solid. This didnt feel like a movie, more like a front row seat to a torture show. There wasn't much of a plot, it appears that the writer focused more on torture than building a plot. The characters were all one dimensional due to the lack of plot building.
The movie was uncomfortable/ disturbing to watch. I wish I could get my time back from watching this film. It had potential but sadly fell short.
Sever (2018)
The Acting and Flat Plot Set This One Back
It pains me to leave a review like this but I'm doing so because the acting was not up to par. It was cringey to watch in certain parts. Batya Cruz (Martha) did a great job acting and really fit well into her role.
The plot was easy to predict about 20 minutes in. It was a pretty flat, straightforward, one dimensional plot no twists or turns. There wasnt much character depth. The characters seemed hollow like puppets even. Other characters came off as very annoying. Maia Kavchak (Mindy) was a decent actress for this film but I feel the role was too small for her acting. She would be best cast in a role with more flexibility, more range. This role was too restricting for her acting. She did great for what she was given.
The character dialogue was also pretty basic; a lot of shouting and swearing. Visually it was also very basic.
In short, I feel this was poorly cast. A different cast (keeping Batya Cruz) and a revamped plot to make it not so predictable and flat could save this moving.
A Fall from Grace (2020)
Suspenseful but then Predictable
The movie starts off strong with a bang. It pulls you in and keeps pulling you in. Although the movie is 2 hours it felt rushed towards the middle and end. This strong movie was left weak as towards the end it became extremely predictable which was a bit of a let down. I felt more time could have spent developing/showing the relationship between Grace and her partner. It just unfolded too easily and too quickly, like a domino effect.
The actors, with the exception of Phylicia Rashad, Tyler Perry and the prosecutor seemed like novice actors which contributed to the story's weakness. Crystal R. Fox did well but I think this role was not suitable for her, she seems like a high caliber actress and this movie did NOT do her justice. There were certain parts that made me cringe and laugh. The intonation in her voice was odd when she interacted with other characters. It seemed unnatural.
This is not a bad movie and I appreciate Tyler Perry giving Black/African American actors these great opportunities. I enjoy his work.
The only reasons I gave this a 7 out of 10 was because of how predictable the movie became and how less of a time was spent delving into Grace and her partner's relationship and lastly because of the acting. Otherwise it's a good film to watch.
Jarhead: Law of Return (2019)
Simple. Predictable.
Really nothing new here. The acting was ok. The storyline was extremely predictable. No plot twists, no suspense. It was a straightforward, simple movie, clear cut. Open and close no thrills, nothing. It was executed well and did it's job, told a story and ended quickly. It's neither really good or bad, just something to throw on if you're bored.
I will say not much time was spent on character development so I didn't have any emotions towards any characters. They could have explored the character Ghost more, that would have been interesting.
It Comes at Night (2017)
What comes at night?
What comes at night is what I found myself asking. I kind of felt tricked into watching this movie thinking it would get better, thinking that something would come out of the plot, like some great reveal. I felt the movie was more of a drama than a horror/mystery. I felt the plot was very one dimensional. There was really no background given on the situation the characters were in. It was pretty annoying how the directors made it seem like something ominous was really going to happen only for nothing to ever happen. It was really full of jump scares.
I thought all of the actors did a great job though. This movie had potential. The plot was just disappointing.
It's not a bad movie, it just drags. The characters are flat and dry, really lacking development and again it's one dimensional and you'll never find out what comes at night.
Temple (2017)
Very Poorly Developed and Disappointing
The plot sounded interesting but the story was hollow. There was no depth, no exploration into the story line. It was lacking in background. I couldn't believe this. They give you a few hints as to what happened and then I guess the rest is up to interpretation and imagination.
This movie had an opportunity to be great. I was really disappointed in this and it ended ridiculously.
I felt like there were 3 plots under the guise of one and none of them were even fully played out.
I almost want to say that this was lazy direction like the writer started off with this great idea and got bored or too overwhelmed with it midway through. I made it to the end of the film only to feel like I've been duped!
