WrestleMania XXVI (2010)
Nothing spectacular (apart from the last match)
OK let's get down to business.
John Morrison & R-Truth vs Big Show & The Miz: Decent enough opener for a Wrestlemania. There was nothing really noteworthy about this match. It was an adequate match, nothing more & nothing less... 5/10
Randy Orton vs Cody Rhodes vs Ted DiBiase: Decent match with good storytelling. I don't agree with Orton being a face (it didn't work last time), but I guess he can always go back to being a heel if this face run fails. The crowd were really into him though. The big question now is what will become of Legacy as I'm sure DiBiase Jr will go after Orton & I have a feeling that Rhodes will get pushed to the side... 6.5/10
MITB Ladder Match: As far as I'm concerned (spot wise), this was the most disappointing ladder match to date. Also, Shelton Benjamin was non- existent in this match which was a huge disappointment as people have come to expect a show stealing performance from him in MITB ladder matches. On the positive side though, the outcome surprised EVERYBODY. I thought for sure that Christian might get this one, but I was wrong. The All American American is Mr Money in the Bank... 6.5/10
Triple H vs Sheamus: I personally believe that it's about time the previous generation stopped bitching about how the younger generation needs to step up & actually step aside & allowed the new generation to do so. Triple H is passed his prime & has no future in the mainevent picture. In the next few years the WWE will be relying on people like Randy Orton & Sheamus (2 men who Triple H has robbed of their Wrestlemania moments). It was a good match however & Sheamus still came out looking strong, but he should've gone over... 6/10
CM Punk vs Rey Mysterio: A very good wrestling match. As well performed as any wrestling match on the card. Rey Mysterio is up there with the greatest in ring performers of all time & CM Punk's stock is continuing to rise as one of the WWE's top performers... 7.5/10
Bret Hart vs Vince McMahon: On this occasion what one needs to remember is a man who was robbed of an appropriate ending to his wrestling career. This match showed everybody for the first time just how bad Bret Hart's stroke was as his movement was VERY limited & the Hart Dynasty was brought in to carry a lot of the match. The crowd was watching a man who had given everything to them & never had the chance to say goodbye properly. The reception he received when he struggled to put on the sharpshooter & then celebrated with his family in the ring was a fitting farewell to the Excellence of Execution & arguably the greatest of all time.
Edge vs Chris Jericho: I'm not buying Edge as a face. Not because he isn't a good face, but because he's too good at being a heel. However this was a good match. The ending was also a surprise as I don't think that many people expected Y2J to leave as champion. There was also a good spot after the match where Edge speared Y2J through the barricade. However, he got a mixed reaction from the crowd which may indicate that people do not fully buy Edge's face persona... 7/10
10 Diva Tag Match: Crap... 2/10
Batista vs John Cena: A pretty pointless entrance from John Cena. The match was actually not that bad considering the limited ability of both men. They have good chemistry together. Despite Cena's lack of ability, his strength will always continue to amaze me. He is quite clearly pound for pound the strongest WWE superstar. Despite a botched reversal into a powerbomb from Batista (a repeat of the finish from their Summer Slam match), the match was a pretty solid effort from both men... 6/10
Undertaker vs Shawn Michaels: One of the most anticipated matches in WWE history. It didn't disappoint. I don't remember being this tense during a match. Shawn Michaels' catalogue of classics is just unparalleled. His moonsault from the top turnbuckle through the announce table was breathtaking & don't get me started on The Undertakers jumping tombstone piledriver. What happened after was one of the greatest endings to a Wrestlemania ever (or at least up there with Wrestlemania 8 & 17)... Match 8.5/10... Occasion 9.5/10
Overall it was a decent show. The commentating was VERY lacklustre & they better have JR back next year. It wasn't spectacular until the last match... 7/10
The 25th Anniversary of WrestleMania (2009)
Oh No Triple H..... WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?
Can you say anti-climax?
1) Money In The Bank Ladder Match A good opener. The thing that works against the MITB Ladder match is that there is only so many spots that you can do with a ladder. Over the last few years, Shelton Benjamin has done almost every interesting spot that a human being can do with a ladder. They are now struggling to out do the previous MITB Ladder matches. This however was a very credible ladder match, but probably the weakest (along with WM XXIII) of the MITB Ladder matches to date. Kofi Kingston probably emerged as the MITB show stealer, although Benjamin had the spot of the match with a crazy Swanton-type dive from the top of an insanely high ladder..... C+
2) Diva Battle Royal A waste of time. The old Divas like Sunny & Molly didn't even get an entrance for the crowd to enjoy their return. To make things worse they had Santino win it. As funny as he is they need to start making him a credible wrestler (which he is capable of being) & not just a jobber who's good on the mic, which they are making him out to be...... F
3) Chris Jericho vs The Legends Much better than I thought it would be. Dare I say that Ricky Steamboat nearly stole the show. What a performance by the Hall Of Famer. It was a match that didn't steal the show but certainly didn't disappoint. The spot with Mickey Rourke at the end was never going to be taken well if it was over the top, so maybe its subtle approach was appropriate..... C
4) Jeff Hardy vs Matt Hardy Good match with some extreme, but not over the top spots. I worried that the spots in this match would be over top, but they did them just right. The ring psychology was good & it was good to see Matt win as that was the result needed if they plan to extend this feud (which I think they will). The Twist Of Fate on the chair was superbly done..... B-
5) JBL vs Rey Misterio It would've been more spontaneous if they hadn't done the exact same thing last year with Kane & Chavo Guerrero. JBL as boring as he is in the ring, is a master of psychology on the microphone. The angle of JBL quitting was as important as the actual 21 second match so I'll take that into account when grading it..... D
6) Undertaker vs Shawn Michael Well..... When I saw Kurt Angle vs Shawn Michaels, I thought that you will never see a better match where no weapons are used EVER again. Not just getting caught up in the hype because Wrestle Mania was only yesterday, but this just might be the best Wrestle Mania match that I have ever seen. As far as storyline goes it was built up very well. As far as in ring action goes, it was a privilege to watch. As far as ring psychology goes, it was a master class. As far as crowd reaction goes, that much crowd reaction hasn't been seen since Hogan vs The Rock. The WWE hasn't received a 5 Star rating for a match in Wrestling Observer for over a decade. If this doesn't get one then something is wrong. On a side note there was a spot where the Undertaker flew over the top rope & HBK moved out of the way sending Undertaker straight to the floor. Undertaker landed head first into the cameraman & a crunching noise was heard. I honestly thought for 5 seconds that The Undertaker had broken his neck & died live at Wrestle Mania..... A*
7) Edge vs John Cena vs Big Show A match that never should've been a world title match at Wrestle Mania in the first place. It wasn't terrible though, but wasn't anything that we haven't seen before. Cena showcased his AMAZING strength by holding Big Show & Edge on his shoulders for a few seconds. This was closely followed by the 3 count that made him World Champion once again, which in turn made for a good finish to the match. Not as bad as a match with John Cena & Big Show could've been..... C
8) Triple H vs Randy Orton Imagine if Stone Cold Steve Austin lost to Shawn Michaels at WM 14. Imagine if The Ultimate Warrior lost to Hulk Hogan at WM 6. Imagine if Chris Benoit didn't win at WM 20. They would've NEVER crossed over to that status that separates a transitional champion (Sergent Slaughter) from a dominant champion (Bret Hart). Orton who is without question the hottest thing in wrestling right now, was ready to take over like Triple H did at Wrestle Mania 2000. Randy Orton is in the the prime of his life at 28 & has a decade of dominance ahead of him. The only thing left for him to do was to defeat the man that he was destined to proceed as the No.1 bad guy in the world of wrestling at WM 25. Could Triple H get over himself for one second & do what was write for business? NO! He ruined Wrestle Mania 25 the same way that he ruined Wrestle Mania 18 by not letting The Rock & Hollywood Hogan be the main event. Orton will now have to start all over again rebuilding his character & we are destined to put up with Triple H until he breaks Ric Flair's record & finally steps down like he should've done at the end of the Attitude Era..... The Match was a C+, but the ending completely downgraded it to an F
A lot rides on the main event of Wrestle Mania as that is what is remembered the most. The ending to this year's main event was the most disappointing in WWE history!
Overall..... C
WrestleMania XXIV (2008)
Better than last year!
This Wrestlemania was a great Wrestle Mania. Not a contender for the greatest Wrestle Mania of all time however, but a great Wrestle Mania. There was no match I felt that will be talked about in 20 years time, e.g Bret Hart vs Stone Cold Steve Austin, which is why it won't go down as one of the greatest Wrestle Mania's of all time in my opinion. There were however some superb 'Match of the Year' contenders. Also, that kind of atmosphere hasn't been seen since Summer Slam 1992.
1) Fit Fnlay vs JBL (Belfast Brawl)
A good enough opening for a Wrestle Mania. JBL (who is in terrible shape by the way) did his whole moody heartless routine whilst Finlay carried on the role of the babyface. Hornswoggle was a welcome addition at ringside. A rushed feud, but a decent match: C-
2) Money In The Bank Ladder Match
Shelton Benjamin decided to steal the show for the 3rd time in a Money In The Bank Ladder Match at Wrestle Mania. The spot from the top of the ladder to the ladder outside of the ring was breathtaking. Matt Hardy made a great cameo appearance taking out MVP. We had a Code Breaker using a ladder, a Back Cracker from the top of the ladder & a moonsault from John Morrison whilst he was holding a ladder. As far as in-ring action goes, this match stole the show: B+
3) Batista vs Umaga
An average 'RAW' quality match. Batista is starting to see signs that the crowd are getting bored of him. He got a lot of boos in this match. Neither man really did anything to make the viewers remember this match... Very average: D-
4) Chavo Guerrero vs Kane
LOL! The shortest match in Wrestle Mania history. This match reminded everybody not to assume that they know what is going to happen next & it was nice to see the WWE give Kane his moment at Wrestle Mania even though it was a very short moment. For the element of surprise alone because there was no in-ring action: C+
5) Ric Flair vs Shawn Michaels
The only thing that these two men had to do was not wrestle like retards because this match was always going to be remembered fondly. This match was all about the wrestling world saying goodbye to the greatest heel in wrestling history. He may have wrestled for 10 years too long, but who could deny that they were choked up by this classic Wrestle Mania moment? A quick note must also be made about a sickening spot involving HBK moonsaulting from the middle rope onto the edge of the announcer's table. I can only assume that the spot was botched because it looked like one of the most painful spots in Wrestle Mania history & HBK looked genuinely in pain. The match was actually a good catch-as-catch-can wrestling match. For in-ring action: C+ / For the occasion: A*
6) Randy Orton vs John Cena vs Triple H
The biggest upset since John Cena's victory over Triple H at Wrestle Mania XXII & Triple H's victory at Wrestle Mania 2000. For the doubters who continue to deny 'The Age Of Orton', this was his defining career moment. Much like HHH's victories over Mic Foley in 2000 cemented Triple H's place as the no.1 man in the business, this victory finally establishes Randy Orton as the top man in the industry (rivalled only by Edge). A decent, but short match. As good as it was expected to be: C+ moved up to a B- because of the surprise ending
7) Playboy Bunny Match
A match that was put there to calm people down in between main events. Your usual half naked women trying to wrestle with the exception of Beth Pheonix who actually can. Also, a cameo appearance from Snoop Dogg who delivered a surprisingly well executed clothesline to a hilarious Santino Marella: E
8) Big Show vs Floyd Mayweather
A match that could've potentially been the biggest flop since Hogan vs Warrior Part #2. However, this match lived up to all of the hype. Mayweather should take plaudits for giving a very credible performance and achieving levels of in-ring storytelling that many WWE superstars fail to achieve. The interference by Mayweather's posse added extra scandal to the match and the finish was great to watch. Both characters came off looking credible as did the WWE in general. For the in-ring action: C+ For the storyline entertainment: B+
9) Edge vs Undertaker
The best Wrestle Mania 'WRESTLING' match since Angle vs Michaels. Edge reminded everybody that he's one of the best in the business & not just a transitional champion. He was actually more dominant over The Undertaker than anybody else has ever been at a Wrestle Mania. Edge reversed almost every Undertaker move and what made the match even more interesting was the less predictable finish which saw The Dead Man win via submission instead of The Tombstone that EVERYBODY was expecting him to win by: B+
Overall a great Wrestle Mania. The matches were of a Wrestle Mania standard, the atmosphere was AMAZING and the segments & celebrity involvement really made it feel like a Wrestle Mania. A great improvement on last year's disappointing Wrestle Mania XXIII: B+
ECW One Night Stand (2006)
John Cena's worst hour! (whether he puts on a brave face or not)
A decent night of action with arguably the most vocal crowd to ever grace a WWE sanctioned event.
1) Tazz def Jerry 'The King' Lawler - The easiest outcome to predict out of all the matches. It was never going to be about the wrestling was it? It was more of a segment than anything else. Anyway, Tazz chokes out Jerry Lawler thanks to interference from Joey Styles. 3/10
2) Kurt Angle def Randy Orton - Quite a good WWE wrestling match. The only thing that I don't like about the ECW fans is that they don't appreciate pure old school wrestling matches, e.g Bob Backlund. This was evident when they chanted "BORING" to Randy Orton. The crowd were really into Kurt Angle. Randy Orton played the heel quite well (after the match when he was being helped out by officials, the fans were calling him a pussy. He acted like they were cheering him by smiling and waving at them. Very funny). 6.5/10
3) FBI def Tajiri & Super Crazy - The crowd showed appreciation for these talented and underrated superstars. Tajiri got a great welcome back reception. A very good cruiser weight match. I'm not sure what the point of the Big Show coming out at the end was though. 7/10
4) Rey Mysterio & Sabu: No Contest - Many people were expecting a lot more but I guess the WWE has to protect it's champion and can't let him get too banged up. A few high spots leading up to the main high spot which finished the match (the finish to the match was a work by the way). The spot at the end did enough to make this match worth while. 6/10 (I would have given it a higher rating if the match was longer)
5) Mic Foley, Edge & Lita def Terry Funk, Tommy Dreamer & Beulah - Good hardcore match, Mic Foley stole the show in this one. Even though he played a heel character, the ECW fans had nothing but love for him and were reluctant to boo him. When they did boo him, it was in a pantomime kind of way. Terry Funk did a Ric Flair job (everybody was just happy that he didn't die). Tommy Dreamer did his usually job, nothing out of the ordinary. Edge showed why he's the most improved wrestler of the year as far as ring presence and main event status goes. The females weren't to be out done either. Lita showed that the WWE shouldn't forget that she can actually wrestle and it was nice to see Beulah back in the thick of things again. 7.5/10 (Match of the night)
6) Balls Mahoney def Tanaka - Judging by Tanaka's match with Mike Awesome at last years ONS, I expected a show stealer. This match was pretty much garbage. Not because of Tanaka, but because Balls Mahoney is the most out of shape wrestler in the world (apart from the Blue Meanie). 5/10
7) RVD def John Cena - Like at WM 22, John Cena's match makes headlines because of the crowd, not the wrestling. I have never seen or heard a crowd with so much genuine hatred for a wrestler in my life. It wasn't the good heel heat that a heel sets out to achieve either. It was the heat that The Rock got before he joined the Nation or X-Pac heat as it's more commonly known. Edge even received a "THANK U EDGE" chant for attacking Cena during the match. John Cena & Mr McMahon can keep acting like the boos don't bother them but even if you have no soul, a reaction like what Cena received would f**k your soul up. I felt genuinely sorry for John Cena and I am no John Cena fan. The match was a standard no DQ match never the less. The match 6.5/10. The crowd reaction 10/10.
I'll give a special mention to JBL who did a segment showing why he has the best mic work in the WWE.
I also can't believe that Vince McMahon had the guts to put Eugene on an ECW show. Even though Sandman beat Eugene up that segment was pretty pointless.
Overall a standard ECW PPV which the fans turned into a good ECW PPV. ECW should always have their events in small arenas otherwise the atmosphere will disappear.
Alvin & the Chipmunks (1983)
A classic cartoon!
I just came across the theme song (we're The Chipmunks ooohhhh!). I started crying when I heard it because it reminded me of a happier time. A time when my entire week was built up toward Saturday morning TV. Once Saturday morning TV was over, a cloud of darkness appeared because I knew that I had school on Monday. This cartoon was one of the classic cartoons of all time. I feel sorry for todays generation, they don't get to experience the Saturday morning TV that my generation got to experience.
This cartoon is up there with Captain Planet, Thundercats and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
WrestleMania 22 (2006)
Probably in the Top 5 Wrestle Mania's!
A good show. I've only got 1000 words, so let's get on with it.
Kane & Big Show vs Carlito & The Master Piece - Decent enough opener, served it's purpose as the opening match. The events after the match planted the seeds for a Carlito/Masters feud. 6/10
Monney In The Bank Ladder Match - Stole the show! I think it's safe to say that Shelton Benjamin saved his career and started a whole new chapter in his professional wrestling life. He just might win the big one some day. After being misused for so long, RVD finally gets treated properly by the WWE bookers. 8.5/10
Mene Gene Okerland/Randy Orton/Batista segment - I still believe that the first time that you should see a superstar on a PPV is when their entrance music hits. Basically this segment planted the seeds for a Randy Orton/Batista feud.
Hall Of Fame Segment - Now that Eddie Guerrero takes his rightful place in wrestling history. Hopefully the WWE can stop milking his death and let him rest in peace. By the way, is there any danger of the WWE putting Owen Hart in the Hall Of Fame (he was one of the best in ring performers to grace a WWE ring)?
Chris Benoit vs JBL - Nobody expected this to be a classic. It wasn't anything special, but it was watchable (because Chris Benoit works so hard). An unexpected finish though. 5.5/10
Edge vs Mic Foley - Mic Foley can die a happy man, knowing that he finally has his defining Wrestle Mania moment. Edge didn't let Mic Foley take all of the bumps either, he wrestled his most impressive one on one match up to date. Well done to both men. 8/10
The freak segment - Very funny!
Booker T vs The Boogeyman - Either release Booker T or put him in a match that he deserves to be in. The Boogeyman effectively ended his WWE career & did his best to take Booker T with him. 3/10
Trish Stratus vs Mickie James - Surprisingly good women's wrestling and a hyped crowd, made this match a classic women's match up. It could have stolen the show if Mickie James didn't do a Brock Lesnar (botch the biggest move of the match). It was actually Trish's fault. She didn't supply Mickie James with enough support to elevate onto the top rope. 6.5/10
The Undertaker vs Mark Henry - This was Mark Henry's chance to earn a contract extension. He blew it! The Undertaker saved this match in the last 5 min. Well done Undertaker for realising that it was Wrestle Mania and raising his game. 6/10
HBK vs Vince McMahon - The feud started slow, but ended well. HBK nearly stole the stole for the 4th straight Wrestle Mania. We all loved the DX crotch chop. Vince McMahon's really letting himself go physically, by the way. Good match! 7.5/10
World Heavyweight Championship - HHH nearly ruined Wrestle Mania by pulling rank and having the 'REAL' main event moved to the 3rd to last match on the card. Kurt Angle was superb. Randy Orton did his job, but seemed like he was there to make sure that people bought the PPV, e.g. HBK at Wrestle Mania XX. Rey Misterio deserves some genuine success, not just the novelty success that the WWE usually gives him. Good match, but too short. 8/10
Lingerie Pillow Fight - Next! 2/10 (you get 2 just for getting into the ring)
WWE Championship - Sometimes the crowd makes a match when the wrestling is just ordinary, e.g. Hogan/Andre The Giant WM III, Hogan/Warrior WM VI, Hogan/Rock WM XVIII (basically every Hogan match). Wrestle Mania 22, definitely Cena's defining moment in his career so far. It's evident that Vince is standing his ground and won't stop promoting Cena until we just cheer for him. Triple H must have cheated on Stephanie or something like that. That's the only reason I can think of for Vince making HHH tap out to Cena at Wrestle Mania. 7.5/10
Overall a very good Wrestle Mania. Probably in the top 5 of all time.
WWF Survivor Series (1997)
Bret Hart has every right to be mad, with a capital AARRRGGGHH!
Before I get to the obvious match, let me just say that this was a time when the WWE's or F's (whatever) mid-card was terrible. I'm not going to go over the under card as they were only there to fill up time.
Stone Cold Steve Austin vs Owen Hart - This match wasn't a good match, but is wasn't really supposed to be. It was just supposed to be Stone Cold re-establishing himself as the main mid-carder on his way to the top. All you had to do was see his beer belly to know that the pre-Summer Slam Steve Austin that Bret Hart said was the best wrestler in the world, was gone.
Bret Hart vs Shawn Michaels - This match lets us see how Americans can't see past their own existence and how Canadians hate them for it. For all those who say get over it. What would you do if you carried a company for the majority of the 90's & was responsible for elevating Stone Cold Steve Austin to mainevent status? Bret Hart gave his life and sacrificed his marriage for the WWF only to be screwed like that in his own country. Not only would I not have let it go, but I wouldn't have left Montreal without making good use of my knuckle dusters.
Leave Bret Hart alone, he has every right to moan as long as he feels like it!
