Here Nicholas Cage plays a con artist with obsessive-compulsive disorder and I have to say it's my favorite role of his. Ticks, anger outflow, a daddy, a conman and a guy with agoraphobia. Hey, if that's not multitasking I don't know what is.
As Mr. Ebert said, Cage is the type of actor whose raging zeal might come off as overacting in another actor, while Cage pulls it off as fearsome intensity.
Excellent Alison Lohman who was 24 at the time, played a 14 year old girl, which was very impressive to mimic the reactions and emotions that of a 14 year old, especially this good.
Sam Rockwell made me laugh in this film one time too many, he plays it so smoothly and casually, you'll want to know what is this guy's story, and beg for more scenes with him.
The plot is very simple and it could be explained in three simple sentences.
For some people the story might be a little cliche, but the ending defies all that. The big revealing was a real shock when I was a kid, and I could remember it very vividly even after almost 10 years. The bond between Cage and Lohman is something that rarely any movie duo could've bought me with. The scene in the saloon is something I'll never forget. It could've ended poorly, angrily, or even sentimental. Instead, it doesn't have any more twists nor explanation it just ends with an appropriate farewell. It ends with a style. It showed us that Roy wasn't mad at her. He was, if anything, proud of her (in a way). Even tho daddy got long conned, he still wants her to take care of her.
This movie holds a very special place in my heart. It's like having a hell of a time with your new friend over the summer, only to find out that friendship has an expiration date. Not only does it happen harshly, but it happens in a very last minute. It's like seeing that friend after some time (after you have forgotten him), and you can't be mad and you won't flip out. You'll make a few inside jokes of yours, you'll remember what a good time you two had, and hopefully, you'll get over it. Cause even tho you might be mad, your life doesn't stop after one hitch.
