Northern Exposure: Zarya (1994)
Off-topic, which is saying something for this show.
If you're already in season 6, you know that Northern Exposure isn't afraid to get off the rails now and then.
We've had historical flashback episodes before, but so late in the series, it feels a bit superfluous. There's really not much tying this to the overarching plot of the show, and the whole idea of it is kind of preposterous. It's mostly filled with famous historical characters and fictional historical stand-ins for the main cast acting out a painfully dry scenario -- we know this isn't going to affect anything, so it feels like being subjected to a mandatory class film or something. Just get back to the real story!
It's no wonder this is one of the lowest rated episodes! Still love this show overall, though.
Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee: Happy Thanksgiving, Miranda (2014)
I can understand the confusion, but not the hate.
I get it. This episode is different because the guest is doing the entire thing in-character. People don't like changes to format or expectations. That makes sense.
You'd have to be familiar with the character to get the schtick (an anti-social, rude, completely unaware of herself "entertainer" who basically lives in her own little weird reality), and let's be real, most people who are familiar with Miranda are probably pretty young. The demographic of CiCGC is MUCH older. It was a bit ambitious to think this episode would go over well.
I still don't think she deserved anywhere near the hate that she got for being on the show. Jerry obviously liked her act and wanted to branch out with guest types, but the audience wasn't having it. So the experiment was a failure and the only person who really suffered for it was Colleen, whose only crime was performing the very act that Jerry invited her on the show to do! You can't exactly blame her for that.
