'Avengers Endgame' is maybe the most anticipated movie of the year. It takes up where Infinity War left off and builds up to a compelling story-line.
I am not a Marvel fanboy or something. I am just a regular person, writing a regular review. As of me, this is maybe the third or fourth MCU movie that I watch at a cinema, and for real, this one really gave me a lot of mixed emotions. I went from grief to alleviation, from depression to happiness, from joy to sadness, and then again to delight, but the end really woke up the best of me. The end of the 22 MCU movies kind of gave me what I was expecting. It unleashed my inner-self as I was anxiously watching what happens next. It gave me another perspective of how I see superhero movies.
So let's talk a little bit about the plot. The movie begins with Hawkeye realizing about the snap, as he's looking for his family, which was right behind him. Then it jumps straight to Tony Stark and Nebula, who are adrift in space. As Tony uses his last strength recording a message to his wife, Captain Marvel shows up and gets them back to Earth. Then, the Avengers decide to go and get the stones from Thanos and undo the snap. This idea rapidly falls off, as the stones vanished after they completed their purpose. After finding out this, Thor goes for the head (yeah, little too late Thor, don't you think?...or not?). 5 year passes as some of the avengers are still grieving, some started over and some went on a different path. But then Ant-Man makes his appearance, when a rat gets him out of the quantum realm (the true savior don't you think?). Not knowing what happened, he seeks answers at the Avengers. After some discussions and contradictions they finally come up to something. Time-travel. After putting the pieces together, Tony Stark finishes his 'time machine', Thor gets back 'in shape' and the journey is set to begin. They split in 3 teams as they travel in the past to collect the stones. Sure, they face up some problems along the way, but those won't stop them. Though, their 'little plan' gets exposed, and Thanos from 2014 finds out about it and travels back to the present day, where Dr. Hulk (Bruce and Hulk combined) puts the stones together and snaps his fingers, bringing everyone back where they left off. Then an epic confrontation between Thanos and The Avengers takes place and the fallen ones get back to the Avengers HQ. This epic fight takes place and Thanos is ultimately defeated as Tony Stark trades his life for snapping the stones again and Thanos and his army evaporate. Steve Rogers gets back to 1945 (or 1970 I am not sure) to live with the love of his life, Peggy Carter, and Thor joins the Guardians of the Galaxy.
All of this journey kinda felt split into two parts. The first one focuses more on the character development and how all of them try to live up on the idea of the snap, and how the snap changed them rationally and physically, while the other one is more action-peaked, more entertaining from the perspective of a person who's here only for the battles.
Overall, the story-line felt different, but somehow we saw it coming, the CGI was beautiful and well done, the fights were on another level, bringing a little bit of emotions from The Lord of The Rings, the jokes were acceptable (maybe a little bit too much anyway, but that didn't bother me), and the idea of HERO being well explained : it doesn't matter how strong you are, but how strong you remain when you lose everything.
Now I am gonna do a little bit of pro and contra for this movie.
Pros: -good story-telling, very different from what we have seen before in the MCU, very compelling, that makes you look at the clock with the hope that the time didn't even pass and that there will be more of it; -spectacular action, as the battles were very well-worked and determined, with a lot of goosebumps; -the relationship between the characters that evolved over the course of time; -great CGI, I have nothing to complain here; -the characters were very well handled, even if people might say that some didn't get what they deserved (I am gonna talk about this later in the review); -the moment where Dr. Strange brought everyone to the remaining Avengers, as they prepare to fight Thanos' army (God that was beautiful); -Captain America finally said ''Avengers assemble'' (the goosebumps though); -the idea of time-travel for me it kinda made sense, after some thinking about it, and the different tone of how it was used was something that Marvel assumed when making this call. -the jokes were also good, as the whole audience laughed at them; -the reunion of the characters was really heart-touching, especially the one between Tony and Pepper or Tony and Peter; -the scene on Vormir, between Natasha and Clint was also very good and ground-breaking as it felt right for her to die, since she wanted him to get back to his family; -the nostalgia that I had from the first Avengers movie, really good; -the end of Tony Stark - from genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist to a hero in flesh and bones, sacrificing his life for the greater good, leaving his ego behind. -''I love you 3000'' - when I heard this, my eyes were literally pouring water. It was so emotional. -Thor joining the Guardians of the Galaxy (wut? I am down for it) -Steve Rogers remaining in the past to spend his life with Peggy Carter; -the legacy that every character left behind, motivating the other ones to become heroes. I could do more, but I am gonna stop now as I think it's already enough.
Contras : -I didn't really like how they managed Hulk's story, I mean, gamma rays? Really? It could have been explored better. -the jokes were too much centered on Thor, I think most of the jokes were about him, they kind of ruined him. -I would have wanted to see more about Tony and Nebula in space. The trailers really made a big deal out of it, when actually it was like 5 minutes of screentime. -a few mistakes of montage and a couple of plot-holes that weren't explained.
Between contra and pro? -Hulk's role in the movie - ''where is it?''. I have seen a lot of reviews saying why they did Hulk like that. I personally put this here so I can expend it from being a contra to a pro. What was the definition of Hulk all of these years ? ''SMASH''. Avengers : Smash. Avengers : Age of Ultron : Smash. Thor: Ragnarok : Smash. Avengers : Infinity War : Smash. All of these years Hulk was used as a human weapon and not as a being. I think this movie gave Hulk the opportunity to change, to become something more. I think Marvel wanted to show us that Dr. Hulk is the best thing that has come out of Bruce and Hulk. A change for the best. They made him a being with emotions, that can feel and that can take decisions of his own, with reasoning. But this is something that some might consider a contra and some might consider a pro so it's up to you.
In my opinion, this really is the grand finale that Marvel has prepared us for. This is maybe one of the best endings that Marvel could have done. And personally, despite the fact that I cried out my soul when I saw Iron man dying, I came to the conclusion that, MCU started with Iron Man, and it ended with him, which I found perfect. I have no other words. I loved this movie '3000'. Thank you Marvel for this masterpiece.
