Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey (2020)
Amazing cast, but...
Listen, I love cheesy Christmas movies as much as the next person, and seeing a primarily black cast in a stand-alone original movie was amazing! The characters themselves were hilarious and I believed in almost every actor on screen. The crew was literally amazing, and the movie isn't a horribly terrible movie at all...
That being said, I couldn't finish it. Maybe it's the overtones of very obvious, repetitive (and honestly not all that great) singing, or the weird dealings with family dynamics... but that kind of ruined the vibe for me? I was watching and all the time I would enjoy the characters, yet cringe at every new stupid little annoying thing they HAD to add for ingenuity...
Sometimes a Christmas movie doesn't have to be THAT complicated, you know.
The Letter for the King (2020)
Everyone here is so angry wth
FOR THOSE WHO CANT READ SPOILERS: it's a good show and people are being angry bc it confronts racial and gendered issues very casually, and it apparently doesn't follow the book, but watch it if you want some good, comedy and equality filled, fantasy time.
Okay. I have not read the book, and I am sorry if the series doesn't do the book justice, but I genuinely think it's a good show. Someone said that a hero should never be scared and timid and I have to say: you're very wrong. There is nothing more powerful than a hero who is terrified and tiny and wouldn't be able to succeed if it weren't for the hope and help his friends provided, if it wasn't for the spite and determination and the promise he made. I LOVE that he's so scared, that Tiuris character trait is "kind-hearted" is both his greatest value and his own downfall. If you're not satisfied by a timid hero I can calmly remind you that he was supposedly not (I have a very specific season 2 theory so I think he is but nevertheless) the prophesied hero, Livinia was !! And if there was one thing she wasn't, it was timid and scared.
Yes, the last episode is weird and a little rushed, and you can BET I am absolutely fuming and my king Jussipo's fate, bc he deserved better and I loved him as a character, but I am also 100% sure that if this show were to get a season 2, that ending would make so much sense. Think about it. The queen is obviously the true darkness, playing a long game, and our hero Tiuri will have his time, since there's a good chance Livinia no longer has powers, but Tiuri is still shaman descendent.
TL/DR; people are being very rude about this show when it's actually very good if you want some satisfying, truly surprising, fantasy content. Everyone saying the actors are horrible and the show is hopeless are very wrong, and need to take a second to look deeper, and maybe think that it's a book series, so of course the confusing "happy" ending is clearly not the ending.
The Knight Before Christmas (2019)
Don't. Think. Just, enjoy.
This movie has a great cast, with a good Christmas message and the BEST concept ever (I am a sucker for the doe-eyed time traveler who knows nothing of todays technology trope) but it's also not very well explained.
Don't think too hard on it, because there is very little background as to why the plot happens and why his quest is exactly what his quest is, but if you just wanna tune out and enjoy a silly original Christmas movie with an adorable concept extremely well executed, then this movie is for you.
Crazy Rich Asians (2018)
Why is everyone so angry?
This movie is STUNNING with a display of traditional Asian culture, which doesn't get much exposure to begin with, not to mention an (as far as I could tell) ALL Asian cast? The only white people showed were d-bags, truly amazing. Not to mention it's GOOD and funny in its own way, a GREAT movie. TL;DR at the bottom, for those interested.
Now you're wondering "is OP an Asian with prejudice? Probably." No. I am not. I am quite possibly whiter than the snow on your front porch. I've just experienced Singapore firsthand (lived there for years) and so I understand a SNIPPET of the strict family traditions that Chinese (and other Asian cultural groups) bear.
The movie is stunning, the actors/actresses are brilliant (and I say this knowing full well that I have before been disappointed in the abilities of Asian actors such as the ones in K-dramas, their acting style just isn't really for me, but this is the kind of acting you would see in a silver-screen western movie, and even though that sounds it's just how it is: the definition of acting differs in different cultures)
Now. Stop being salty over the display of wealth when that's the TITLE of the movie. The whole premise is that these people masquerade behind all this money and power with their messed up lives, and yeah the plot was ever so slightly predictable because that's the plot that sells tickets!! It's a great plot, they incorporated and showcased Asian/Chinese culture within the plot this time, and the whole movie makes you feel within your comfort zone as it drags you to a completely different world. Sometimes a foreseeable plot is not the death of greatness, but quite the opposite. I dare say that almost every Western RomCom movie has MORE similar plotlines than this movie.
It's stunning. 10/10, they shouldn't have tried to pay the lead actress less than her male counterpart for the sequel, because I desperately want a sequel (all though the movie does end in a satisfying one-off kind of way)
TL;DR: It shows a stunning display of Asian/Chinese culture incorporated into a recognizable frame of RomCom(Tragedy) while also showcasing its brilliant actors/actresses, not to mention the underbelly of a Rich life. Stop being angry that it's ostentatious or stupid, it's neither. It's actually quite funny and a GREAT movie over all.
Let It Snow (2019)
Star studded cast
The cast was amazing, every actor and actress (as proved by previous movies/shows that they've done) are amazing, but it takes more than that to make a good movie.
I'm not saying it's a horrible movie, but it's rushed and an absolute mess, with so many plot holes, the biggest one being all these kids having parents that are okay with them being at a Waffle Town party on Christmas Eve?
Some people are calling it the teen version of "Love, actually" and maybe they're right, but i feel like the connection between the individual stories wasn't quite as present as in love actually, and some of the characters were completely unnecessary.
I'm not sure how to actually feel, because I dread that the entire concept would have been great with a slightly different script, but at least it's a cute Christmas movie, filled with talent, just not really any coherency (I feel)
Sidenote: they should have gone all out and just called the movie Waffle Town (would've been hilarious)
Daniel Sloss: X (2019)
Everyone here is offended, why?
I've been reading the few reviews and I gotta say, you must not understand why he's doing what he's doing?
I watched his show live and the entire room went from crying laughing to being the most tense setting ever, and then back to crying laughing, all in the span of 2 minutes. The man is an artist when it comes to this exact kind of comedy, because he talks about what needs to be talked about in a way where, like he says himself: "if you disagree, you're an assh*le"
His opinions aren't radical, and his humor has always been with a serious side note, this time just happened to be something that effects nearly every woman out there, which sadly also affected his dear friend; Rape. I think it's more than wonderful that he's able to use comedy as a gateway to highlight just how pressing this concern is, because a lot of people won't listen.
He uses his white male privilege to speak about something important, like he has done since his first comedy show. The only difference here is that more people now feel called out, because like he said in his show, he's "warming up the water to boil the frogs alive".
He is an awesome comedian and his humor is wonderful, he understands his audience in such a spectacular way that he predicts what we will think and feel about the things he says, and nothing says great comedian quite like that.
TL/DR: he's right, you're wrong. He always has and hopefully always will be the one comedian that who tackles issues like broken relationships and rape, while making such original and downright hilarious content that you can't help but be entranced. He's the cream of the crop, and just because his humor is dark doesn't mean it should be dismissed. It's rare to find a comedian who is quite so talented at keeping that perfect balance.
