It's all about the journey
19 August 2023
The movie really seems to divide people, personally I loved it. It's visually a treat.

A good deal of the dialogue is Mc Brides internal conversation which really adds to the sense of isolation as well as immense distance in a huge universe. Yes, even I a layman, noticed some impossible physics, but I think that's covered, after all it's called science fiction.

Probably the last part of the film doesn't seem to belong, and the father/son relationship didn't feel altogether authentic. I must admit the explosion propelled flight home was a little icky.

Suspend your disbelief and enjoy the ride

Think 'Heart of Darkness' in space.

come back Ed Wood.
19 August 2023
I saw that this was on my watch list and that I'd watched half of it some time ago. I couldn't remember why I had abandoned it. Today I found out. It's pretty awful in all aspects. It's trying very hard to be both arty and meaningful. The acting was wooden and sub amateur. There was tech on display to denote future: a kind of man/robot thing wearing a poncho and welding goggles; a miniature mechanical spider thing that I think was clockwork. Personal video communication devices, which were clearly magnifying glasses worn (tied)around the neck. Still not sure about the story. Scored 3 for the effort.

Excellent science fiction.

I generally don't like films set in one scene, though I was recently very impressed with 'Locke'. This movie blew my socks off. It was engaging, intense and racked up the tension nicely. Quite a straightforward story, it didn't try to be clever and twisty, nor did it use bewildering CGI, it just unfolded at a nice pace. It was also nice to look at. I highly recommend.

Amateurish mess
13 September 2021
Even the Horror Channel has plumbed new depths by showing this dross..An embarrassing failure on every level. The scene where they're shown drinking from clearly empty beer bottles is particularly awful. Absolute waste of time.

Not Cloverfield
22 April 2021
I only managed the first 60 minutes of this. I watched after reading the Amazon blurb comparing this with Cloverfield. It really, really isn't anything like Cloverfield, it's not even Sci Fi. I don't suppose it's the fault of the film. Nonetheless I found it a dull experience with unlikeable characters. On the plus side it seemed to be well shot with high production values which is why I gave it 4*

Where's the rest of it ?
21 November 2020
I was ready to settle down for the afternoon for the 1 season, only to find that length is only 30 minutes total, why? It's an interesting premise and is crying to be further developed. While it looked a bit cheap and the script and acting could do with a bit of polishing, I found it engaging and wanted to see more. It's still a lot better than most that's available on tv at the moment. Couple of Easter eggs in it as well, particularly the glimpse of the Bauhaus album in hero's vinyl collection (Bela Lugosi's dead!). Please make some more.

Hit and miss, but a new star is born.
23 October 2020
Not as funny or charming as the first movie, but still better than anything else around at the moment. This time the target(s) of his humour are almost entirely Republicans and the right, which became a bit tiresome, though I'd love to know the full SP on the Giuliani scene. What really kept this film afloat was Borat's daughter (Maria Bakalova ), she really owned the role and ran away with it, I don't think I've been so impressed with a new actor in many years, she was fantastic I hope we see more from her soon.

Quality film making
13 October 2020
Ok, this is slow and mostly without dialogue, but to score it as low as 1 or 2 is just disingenuous. It's beautifully made, the word 'crafted' comes to mind. The clothing props and creatures are meticulously put together, it's very atmospheric. It's nicely shot and the scenery is a feast for the eyes. This is a quality piece of work.

The title sets the bar too high.
4 October 2020
I'm 5 episodes in, I'm not sure if I'll continue. Leaving aside that the only thing it shares with the novel is the title, as a stand alone Sci Fi it just feels bland and unoriginal. There is nothing new presented or explored: it's well put together, it looks nice and must have had some cash thrown at it but still somehow comes across as cheap, naive , and Dr Who-ish, and is better aimed at teen viewers. Personally, I would have been a little more generous if it had merely been 'loosely based on' or 'inspired by' the novel, but it seems the producers are riding on Huxley's coat tails for an easy cash-in. On the plus side; it features a very brief and amusing appearance by comedian, Rich Hall, and has a very nice soundtrack. I was really looking forward to this but realise I expected too much.

Not woke enough. I fell asleep twice.
19 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I'd read some bad reviews, so my expectations were low. This is normally a good thing , there's a good chance I'll enjoy it, but this Terminator deserved any and every criticism, as a stand alone it was at best mediocre, as a key part of the franchise, it brings about it's demise. There was nothing fresh in this. Most of the action seemed to be a cut and paste of 1 & 2, but now the terminator seemed to be able to fly, divide into 2, and grow tentacles; probably to appeal to the Marvel fan or the hard of thinking. I've seen and enjoyed the new Bladerunner and, The Martian, but for the life of me I don't recall Davis. Here in a main role, she really doesn't impress. Initially see seems to affect a Robot-y demeanor, which is odd as she is an(enhanced) human, maybe its her acting style or bad direction. Much worse though is Hamilton's role, I like and respect Hamilton but she should have given this a miss, to resurrect her character after nearly 40 years was just wrong. It was like they were dragging round a senile bad-ass granny, it was as if she has become a parody of herself. But it wasn't really her fault entirely, she had been given some of the most cringe worthy, cliched cheesy lines in movie history. Arnie turns up, but adds little more than his name. The other protaganists I barely remember. In T2 Robert Patrick was a frightening and relentless Terminator, scary. Arnie forged an ersatz parent child relationship. These aspects reached out and connected with the viewer. I felt no emotional connection with TDF whatsoever, I didn't care what happened to the characters, or even the human race. There has been a lot of discussion on whether this was trying to be woke, I suppose its a fair comment. But if your trying to make a woman-prominent film you have to create more intelligent developed roles, it's not enough to stand in mens' shoes and say lines that could be written for men. Perhaps more woman should be involved in the whole production process, particularly Direction and scriptwriting. At the moment I don't think the is any need to be concerned with future T movies.

Surprisingly good movie.
8 August 2020
Usual Saturday night dross on TV, just happened to start watching this on London Live channel. It had me interested from the outset. Great little small budget movie with good FX, nice characters that I became interested in, and because I cared about what happened to them there was just the right amount of tension. No plot twists or other voodoo, just a straight forward entertaining movie.

Unexpectedly entertaining.
26 May 2020
I never had a lot of time for Elijah Wood, but this is the 3rd movie I've seen him in of late and I've been impressed, it's also always a treat to see the very underrated Stephen Mchattie. I wasn't sure what to expect and found it a little slow to begin with but it gradually became very engaging as it unfolds into a very dark comedy of sorts. Comparisons aren't everyones cup of tea but it was not unlike Coen Bros film. I'm not going to say anything about the plot, but it was a very pleasant surprise to see Michael Smiley appear as the deranged 'Jethro'. I really enjoyed this movie.

Bronson tribute act?
28 February 2020
Doing the rounds from the Amazon slop bucket. This is obviously an 'in' joke that went over my head. The hero a is man who is the double of Charles Bronson, in looks ,clothing and demeanor. He goes around shooting bad actors at random. The plot, if can call it that, is held together by a radio talk show host (Baldwin) which is such an old device, here it's used in place of a coherent narrative. The current 5.9 score really surprises me, but suckered me in to watching it, well some of it. With a bit of tweaking it would have made a decent spoof movie, a la Scary Movie. If you are a fan of Bronson it's probably best avoided, lest you decide to seek revenge on the creators of this banality.

Proper Sci Fi
5 December 2019
I really liked this film. I've seen reviewers write that this wasn't sci fi, more about politics or a detective story, what about Bladerunner or Brave New World?, decent sci fi has usually dealt with human issues and pre-occupations. I won't relate the plot as it's already well written about. The first half was probably a bit slow for some , but it was probably necessary to set up the story. Overall the movie looked good on the eye it can't be easy to invent a new look for aliens these days, they did remind me somewhat of the aliens in 'attack the block' The special effects/aliens were used sparingly, which was a positive thing. The feeling of hopelessness and despair was palpable. The plot was interesting without being overly complicated. For me the most interesting and sinister aspect was that the alien 'legislators' lived deep underground. There is a twist in the tale that you can probably see coming. Personally I think this is in the tradition of good sci fi.

The New Roommate (I) (2017)

You'll be wasting electricity
30 November 2019
Q: What have these films have in common? The Martian The Revenant, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Donnie Darko, Doctor Zhivago, Rosemary's Baby, The Exorcist, Slumdog Millionaire, A Streetcar Named Desire .

A: At an IMDB score of only 8.0, they are all inferior to 'The New Roomate' which has 8.5.

I hate to disparage anyone's efforts in making a film but it's just dishonest to lure interest to this very, in every respect, poor quality, amateurish, risible, embarrassing dog pile. Quite often with a low budget offering there is an X factor which makes it stand out, such as 'heart', 'vision', a 'je ne sais quoi', there is nothing like that here. This will suck 87 minutes of your life into the abyss.

Wrong on every level; Re defines 'bad'; A new low in Bumblecore
26 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
If you go right to the bottom of the pile of Prime's worst movies ,and then keep digging you may come across this. This is so far beyond terrible, but I did manage to laugh. It's set in a dystopian USA that has been "overrun" by Globalists (The S.C.R.A.G.S,honestly!) The rebel faction are the 'Pales'. The scrags head a conspiracy , whereby they kidnap pale women and breed them to create a global race of light skinned people. I can't believe that I'm writing this. I won't bother with the minutiae of the plot, but our 2 male, pale, heroes rescue a couple of unappealing females from the scrags , they live happily ever after. To be fair there were a couple of well shot scenes involving the car, with interesting music, but these were totally at odds with the rest of the film. The acting was completely and utterly diabolical as was the script, I think I've named a new genre 'Bumblecore'. The action scenes were risible in the truest sense. The special effect, an explosion, was made on a machine running Windows '98. The costumes were really funny, the fascist cops wore gas masks for some reason, and what appeared to be children's toy helmets that didn't fit properly. It put me in mind of very old b/w episodes of Dr Who. You could see that it was the same mishapen actors that were in every fascist cop scene. Lastly, it was made in black and white, apart from the scenes when it was inexplicably in colour. I've only bothered to write this because, once again it has been given a mystifying rating of 6.7, while on planet Earth 0.67, would have been generous. Perhaps if you were watching this with a few mates, beers and, smoking a few euro-fags, followed by Plan 9 FOS, it could be a giggle. Right now I score it as 1/2, the only reason that I scored so high is because the actresses kept their clothes ON!

Banal, often risible.
16 November 2019
Moon, Life of Pi, Brazil, Do the Right Thing,District 9, Josie Wales, Children of Men, Spinal Tap, John Wick 2; these are all movies that I have enjoyed that have scored 7.9 on IMDB. Demon is rated 7.9. The disparity between the score and the actual quality of this barely watchable trash-fest is breathtaking. The horror anthology genre is a bit of a curates egg, in most of them I usually find that I'm interested in one or two characters, or stories that I would like to see developed or expanded, not so here. It's just bad, in the most mediocre way. Ultimately , giving dishonest or delusional ratings on sites like IMDB, is detrimental to film makers and viewers alike. If this film had been realistically rated I may have viewed it as a low quality/low budget movie that tried hard, and offered positive criticism , instead I feel I've been duped and am bereft of any goodwill. The best thing about Demon was the mercifully short 70 mins run time.

Didn't expect too much from this film so I was surprised it was as good as it was. Probably not that original but very engaging from the beginning. I don't want to add any spoilers but I thoroughly recommend it. Deserves more than the current 5.9 IMO

To Hollyoaks and beyond
26 July 2019
I was so unimpressed with episode 1 but I stayed until ep2 to give it a chance; I wish I hadn't, it just accelerated on a downward trajectory. The crew of the space ship is manned by a crew of barely adult, emotionally inadequate idiots who don't seem to have any skills that equip them for this mission, nor knowledge of basic physics and science, although this crew has been selected to save mankind! The script is awful but is complemented by the terrible acting. Sets and special effects are equally poor, it puts me in mind of Space 1999, but lacking Gerry Anderson's standards. The engine room of the craft is reminiscent of a 19th century steamship sans steam but this doesn't represent 'steampunk' or ironic plot device. The bad science throughout was almost laughable. I was left feeling nothing for any of the characters or plot. I have been harsh in my criticism but bear in mind this is a Netflix production presumably made with adequate funding and expertise so there is no excuse too have produced such abysmal drivel, most aspects of which are sub-par.

A cracking movie
17 July 2019
After reading some reviews here I was expecting the worst. Turned out to be an engaging and entertaining film. Not a great deal of action but a good story with plenty of tension, and everyone involved given a chance to act (including the dog(s). Certainly one of the better movies I've seen recently.

very disappointed
30 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
It's not really a horror film, it's a tries-too -hard-to- be- arty teen flick with the cannibalism merely a device. Perhaps I'm being a little unfair, but I've looked forward to seeing this for some time, mainly because of the hype and it was a let down. It was well .made and good to look at but that's all. I only stuck it out to the end because of the supposed big reveal which turned out to be a damp squib and was obvious from the first scene.

2 June 2019
I started to watch this on Prime, based on the 6.9 IMDB score. To be clear I only watched the 1st 10 minutes, to that point it was so awful I couldn't bear to watch any more. The first few seconds already revealed terrible acting, unconvincing action, amateurish camera work and awful dialogue. At around 5 minutes in the the female lead has a wound to left of her mouth, in the previous scene it was on the right. That's what really done it for me { I went back and checked, there was no mirror shot or other explanation).. I know that there are many films that polarise an audience, these are generally made with passion and/or enthusiasm, this isn't one of them. If you value your time this is one to avoid.

The Woman (I) (2011)

Uncomfortable, disturbing, mesmerising and, original.
22 May 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I've just watched this on Prime. This is one of the most disturbing films I have seen, but utterly absorbing. I didn't recognise any of the cast but they all played their roles really well, in particular the very youngest child. It's uncomfortable viewing though not in the same vein as Hostel,Saw etc, and not nearly as visceral , until the last few scenes that is. I won't explain the plot, although towards the end when you think it can't get any more fu**ed up, it suddenly does (with a loud WTF! from me). There were some flashbacks and other small clues that alluded to the origins of the female protagonist, but nothing too explicit. At the end I couldn't help wondering how long Dad's activities had gone on for and there were maybe few bodies scattered around his ranch style property; Or even perhaps he was introduced to it by his own father?

I read here that some cinema goers walked out of this movie citing 'misogyny', woman here are subjugated and brutalised in many ways, but in no way is it titillating, sensationalised or enjoyable. You are left in no doubt that the males portrayed are nasty depraved scumbags who satisfyingly, get what they deserve. While the Father (and Junior) are clearly misogynistic, the subtext of the movie is not. I've said too much.

13 May 2019
I've just watched this on Netflix, with little expectation. All in all a great little movie with an unexpected twist at the end that leaves a wide open space for sequel(s),which I'd like to see. It's helped along by a pretty over the top baddie (Franco) and an excellent music score by Mogwai. While the plot and characterisations aren't complex or deep, remember it is about a KID THAT FINDS A RAY-GUN !!!, not Hamlet.

I've no idea how this made it to Netflix. This movie has no redeeming qualities.I hate to knock independently made movies, but this fails entirely. Found footage ,poor acting, cliched script, laughable special effects. I will admit that I didn't make it to the end of the film, I just couldn't.
