The Squid and the Whale (2005)
slice of Life
This movie was very in your face slice of life. It was an interesting narrative following the lives in an intellectual and very dysfunctional family the tow boys are forced to examine relationships they felt were strong with the parents and how it affected relationships they had with other people. I think the action was really good. All the actors seemed very realistic and their relationships with each other seemed real. It dragged a little for me, but I think it was a good effort and a creative story. Some of the parts were really shocking. I think this film is worth watching, but just be ready to deal with some dark issues. The cinematography is great and I like the music as well. It wasn't my favorite film, but it was a good drama.
Once (2007)
loved it
This was definitely a feel good movie, I went in expecting a cheesy musical. But, I came out pleasantly surprised at how good it was. The two main characters work really well together both musically and in the dialogue sections. They have a great connection. I really like the music it was kind of a folky sound with a rock twist. I am definitely going to pick up the sound track. It was interesting to see Dublin it looks like a cool city. I liked the relationship between father and son and with mother and daughter, I thought those parallels were good writing. The scene with the vacuum was so funny and cute. I think this is one of the best films of the year. Everyone should go see it. It's not flashy it's just real and it leaves you feeling great it's definitely worth seeing!
Man vs. Wild (2006)
great show
Wow is this show great! I have found myself totally addicted ever since I saw Bear gnawing on the carcass of a zebra which he pronounces Zeh-bra. I love watching him figure out ways to get out of tricky situation! I wonder what the camera man does some of the situations seem like they would be hard enough not holding a camera. As a reality show I think this is great. It is entertaining useful and it takes on one of the most basic human conflicts man vs. nature. I really like the one where he is stranded on a desert Island and he climbs the coconut tree, and makes a raft it's like castaway coming to life. He sees a shark and he stays totally calm it's nuts! Anyone who is interested in nature will enjoy this show. I personally think it's great! I would suggest anyone give it whirl!!!
